I had a buddy who worked at a apple certified store that closed down at the end of last year unfortunately. He helped me and my friends get replacements for our phones when they broke. He would tell us to book an appt online and say x and it would qualify for some replacement program apple ran under the radar. I dropped a 20 lb metal cable attachment at the gym on my iphone x and it totally killed the top 20% of my screen's ability to detect touch. Hit up my buddy and was able to get a new screen and even a screen protector for free. Gonna miss that.

@fosterlewis7360
@fosterlewis7360 3 жыл бұрын
Haha 😂 I sure hope nothing goes truly portless, as hardline is always more reliable and lower energy usage. But I’m super old-school, coming from an audio engineering perspective. 😉 WiFi is super convenient, but it’s a waste to blast all that energy into the radio band. And inductive charging is highly inefficient-typically a minimum of 30% of the energy is wasted. If you get power from coal, that’s ~30% more coal burned by using the device. It was bad enough that they eliminated the 1/8” audio jack, though they did easily clog with pocket lint. Now no dedicated power connector. And my phone’s lightning port already seems to be having some intermittent connectivity issues, 2-years in. But I got an M1 laptop and I gotta say-not needing an extra power adapter with a quality dock means I have a reliable, single-cable connection to everything on my desk, which is awesome. And still have a power brick for another favored home station. (Other people might also use it for travel.) The convenience of quickly relocating because of the single cable to dock is undeniable. Too bad they’ll probably require a second cable for a second external display, assuming the imminent successor models support two external displays at all.

Some guys, trying to make Linux work on the M1 Macs, started to reverse engineer the M1 architechture as much as possible. They’ve found out, that the SSD drives although use the NVMe protocol to communicate, the SSD is not connected to the SoC using PCIe. They mention some “direct-mapped” layout for the storage. If I understand correctly, this means that the SSD is part of the memory address space of the CPU. That could explain a few things: 1: The disapperance of the T2 chip with the M1, as in later Intel Macs, this chip was used as the disk controller. 2: The soldered-on SSD form factor is now seems as a nessesity, as direct-mapping the SSD would be impossible via PCIe. 3: The excessive wear of the SSDs can be easily explained if the CPU can just simply address the drive and use it as it would be DRAM. (For example, when using a page file, you can work now with the paged memory if it would be in the RAM, at the cost of slower speed, and more data written to the drive. Speed is not a big concern here I think, a modern NVMe drive can easily perform as well as a DDR2 RAM would back in the day, but SSDs don’t like this much write rates this high this fast…) If it is really designed this way, this is the next level of planned obselence. These machines will KILL their SSDs in max 3-4 years. Not from malfunction, not from software bugs, but from the way that the architechture is designed.

To point 2: It's not a neccessity to have soldered on ssd chips regardless. Sure, you couldn't use a regular PCIe interface with that architecture. But if Apple was willing to, they could've designed replacable chips with some form of connector. The problem is, as always, that Apple doesn't care about anything other than profit margin.

The “it’s faster than last year” joke is funny since they say that every year but yeah it’s actually a substantial improvement… And “synthetic Benchmarks” bs is worthless. You shouldn’t trust one Benchmark alone but if you want to test the performance of the machine you need to Benchmark it. Geekbench won’t show you everything. Cinebench won’t show you everything. But adding 4-5 Benchmarks and using all of them gives you a good indication of the real world performance. If you don’t care about performance fine… But considering how Apple got grilled for their bad cooling and the throttling issues it’s a bit dumb to now say performance doesn’t matters… performance matters and Apple should be criticized for dumb stuff but shouldn’t be criticized for actually good stuff…

@@jhoughjr1 I was responding to OP, I didn't see your message. Some devices can indeed catch fire because of a faulty design. When I bought my MacBook Pro back in 2015 I only had it for a few weaks and my charger made a loud 'POP' w/ a flash out of nowhere. Charger was dead. Judging by the sound, flash and smell a capacitor blew out for some reason. I took it back to the store and instead of them simply giving me a replacement charger, they had to 'send it in for repairs' or something dumb. I had an important exam later that day and I couldn't work without a working charger. Great customer service, right? I ended up buying some little MagSafe to MagSafe 2 converter plug from a different stores that sells refurbished Apple products. I used my old charger to overcome the issue. Needless to say I'm glad that I switched back to PC, so I can just fix my own stuff instead of having to rely on Apple's 'customer service' ;-)

@@jhoughjr1 In the past Apple products were a great choice for professionals because of their reliability. It's been the industry standard for music production for a good reason: it simply worked. Apples computers gave superior performance both in their efficiency (sofware/hardware optimization) and their stability/reliability. Some of the older machines still do a great job, for sure. However, there's been this push towards putting all kinds of dumb extra stuff in these machines that nobody needs, bad thermal design, bad overal product design and both the stability and lifespan of these products is suffering. Steve Jobs was a crook, but at least he overcharged you for a solid product. After he died and Tim Cook took over, there seems to have been a shift in the company's focus. Prices have gone up, lifespan and reliability have gone down. In the meantime, both hardware and software have been getting better optimization for Windows. Now we're at a point where many music industry professionals are switching to PC because Apple simply doesn't offer something that PC doesn't, except a familiar OS. It's just not worth the upcharge anymore. The 'Apple Tax' used to be worth it, but at this point I strongly doubt I'll ever go back to Apple.

Just switched from my XPS15 to the new M1 MBP. It's a pleasure using it, I sometimes don't charge it for an entire week while editing or writing on it for hours and the battery just lasts. I also got a usb c display that charges it while connected, that is very convenient. Today though I went to a friend's place where we watch the new attack on titan episode every week and after that we watch Californication on DVD. Today we couldn't 🥲 I used to bring my XPS but I sold it yesterday, so I brought the Mac instead. Forgot to bring the *dongle* to connect to the DVD player 🤦‍♂️

I love the ease of using a Mac. And I just got a M1 Mac. And the Windows 10 experience reminded me of why I chose a Mac all those years ago. But, yes Mr Rossman, I did learn something from this video and It was informative and I do appreciate your experience, expertise, and honesty. And yes, I would be very pissed off it I cannot repair or upgrade my Mac in 3 to 5 years time. Except thru Apple. I do take your point about the foolishness of soldered SSD, and our Right to Repair, and everything else you said. But given the choices we have (Mac or Windows), we choose what would best serve our needs at the moment. But yeah, videos and information you provide is useful, helpful and informative. Thank you.
