I used to play chess. That was actually The International Chess Federation Official Handshake. It consists of a series of 6 fist to hand sequences followed by a regular handshake to signify the original Tchaikovsky gambit in honor of his venerable name, consisting of a 6 pawn exchange followed by a queen gambit for checkmate. As a chess player, I feel the need to explain: The rules of over the board tournaments literally state, that You must shake hands with Your opponent before the game. It's a mandatory sign of respect, similar to bows before a fight in certain martial arts. However, due to COVID-19 FIDE allowed the possibility of not doing a handshake, or replacing it with something else, like a fist bump. Here's where the confusion started, it is so ingrained in us, as chess players that we need to shake hands before the game that when we're suddenly expected to do something else... well, this happens. But by now, most of us learned to always use hand sanitizer before the game, so the handshakes go through anyway.

You don’t have to be a chess player to get confused by a sudden change in ritual. I remember early on in the pandemic a lot of confusion on switching to fist bumps or elbow bumps over handshakes and having as awkward interactions.

I once had a handshake that was that level of awkward!!! When I was a young woman, I needed glasses for night driving and went for my first ever eye exam. The doctor was an extremely soft spoken, pleasant and polite white man in his fifties, and I was extremely courteous back. It was all very formal and very pleasant. And as we are leaving the exam and I am thanking him and he is pointing me to the front desk, I say "it was very nice meeting you!"
