I've illustrated mine, copying similar pictures. It isn't as beautiful as this, but it's as lovely as I can make it. I heard of several people in the middle ages doing so, too, not just pre-purchased books of Hours, but people illustrating their own. I sing the office, and the music looks nice, too.

It's a copy of the gorgeous Hours of Anne of Brittany from Jean Bourdichon, truly a masterpiece of late medieval illumination. The full page painting are reflecting the beginning of Italian influences and pre Renaissance art, while the margins depicts all sorts of plants and flowers like a miniature garden. Lovely ! I had the chance to see it and it's absolutely wonderful.

I adore The Book of Hours, and this one is exquisite! The colors are so deep and true, and as an Anglican (yes, despite being a lifelong Southern Californian), the contents of this book are far more precious to me than the embossed covers, the interior gilt, the page edges, and the amazing illuminations. (Although I would have to learn French to read this book!) My Master's degree is in British medieval literature, and I studied only a smidge of French medieval literature in translation. I don't want to know how much it costs, though; the budget of this modest teacher could never handle it. Thank you for showing it to us; it's absolutely outstanding. As a former bookseller, I love this channel soooo much!
@southernlady50852 ай бұрын
Good for you to be a teacher of medieval literature! Although, I majored in Romantic lit, and have advanced degrees in theology and religion, I have found my passion in the Anglo-Saxon into early medieval period. Trying to learn Old English and have been studying illuminated manuscripts now in retirement. It was my love of Tolkien, iconography, and family genealogy discoveries ( some Vikings) that brought me to this time period. Want to incorporate the techniques of iconography/illuminated artwork into my own art compositions.

Working in a library, 3 decades ago, I took an old rare Scottish history book from the reserve stacks. The guy who had requested it promptly began to lick his fingers as he furiously thumbed through it as though it was some cheap magazine. I warned him once. Then twice. And finally projected him outdoors onto the pavement. For a while, it looked as though my employers might support him - given his local social status. But a kindly local professor of literature not only intervened but threatened to put the story into the national press - for whom he already wrote. I've been retired for years now. Last time I visited that library the volume couldn't be found...

I used to enjoy book fairs. But, just apart from the fact I don't travel well these days, I don't go to them any longer. Without the funds even to dabble (my last purchase, 12 years ago, a very nice old volume of Yeats) I just tend to get upset at what I can't possibly afford. I still have a few rare volumes. At a loss to know what to do with them. I just haven't the wind - at 80 yo - to sell on eBay or Amazon. Especially having discovered (after charges and postage) how sparse were the rewards. Sons not interested. Grandchildren not interested in anything that can't be recharged. Gave some to local charity shops - to learn they'd been pulped for pennies. Tried some of those book resale apps - to be offered 50p for a collectable book that cost me £40. Tempted just to put the buggers in trunks and bury them somewhere - and bloody good luck to whoever eventually finds them.

For a book fiend like me, THAT is an orgasmic book. The oldest book I own (no, NOT a rare book collector, but just LOVE books) is a text on Lycanthropy from the 1800s. Nothing special, cloth-bound. But the pages are heavy thick material. And for me, then a 20ish year old, to find such a volume was amazing. And in the catch-all bin of a 2nd hand shop as well! I still have that book on my bookshelf back in the Ph. 😊

Those are the prayers all religious like nuns and priests pray everyday throughout the day at certain times. I pray they even though I’m a layman. The Hours is considered the prayer of the whole world and of the church.
