The one thing I’ve always admired about Leno is that he drives and enjoys everything in his collection. So many collector cars just get squirreled away in barnes and garages and never used. It’s refreshing to see a collector who isn’t afraid to take take his cars out and use them as they were intended to be used.

I love these cars. I saw a beautiful Voisin C25 once at an autoshow in Germany and it left such an impression on the young me. That was probably one of the experiences that led me to realize that automobiles can be not only well crafted, engineered or fast and loud, they can be works of art, looking like they are going 100mph while standing still. And that is something special in and of itself and its enough to justify a cars existence.

Jay mentioned Harry Miller and the dual overhead cam design. As Jay says later in the video, all the good ideas for early auto engineering originated in France. In fact Miller got the idea for his dual overhead cam design from the 1913 Peugeot Type L3 Coupe de l’Auto Voiturette Racing car. Miller’s designs ended up as basis for the Offenhauser and Meyer Drake Indy engines.

Peugeot invented the twin-cam engine (winning the 1913 Indy 500 with it). Bob Burman bought one of the cars and when he couldn't get a replacement engine from Peugeot he got Harry Miller and Fred Offenhauser to build one for him. They learnt valuable info from that engine and were then able to redesign, refine and improve the layout over the years. BTW love all of the classics you have and thanks for sharing them and their history with us

Jay, it's a stunning car. Thanks for sharing. One point about the car you may not be aware of, or you simply misspoke, the finish on the valve pans is not "Engine Turned". The process used is something called "Hand Scraping" . Typically seen on the ways of mills, and lathes. It's not only beautiful, but functional for getting the metal perfectly flat, and also giving it just enough texture to hold a film of oil. It takes a real master to do that type of work. As an old Machinist turned engineer, these kinds of things are what make me go "WOW!" Thanks again, and keep up the great work!

Bad Chad is banging one out a look alike for Jolene. He is working of pictures and doing it all by eye and taking his time doing so. It's quite interesting to follow his build as he is continuously refining the shape and creating something that looks a lot like the original, but given the method for designing it I wouldn't call it a real replica. Still there's so much work in shaping all those panels it takes a very special mind and an impressive set of skills to do it. Time after time I'm amazed at his skills when he free hand complexly shaped body panels and it ends up fitting together. He makes something very complex look way to simple. Note that I'm not on board with all his decisions when it comes to design, but I can't argue with his skills, and the results are way better put together than I would have imagined.

I agree Jay. I saw one in Paris , Ralph Laurens's Black version in the Louvre show when I lived there. Well driven by the original owner! I have to say I love your blue more ! For me its the roof line and riveted fin !

Thank you Jay for this great video that will endure the ages showing your Bugatti actually being driven. Please keep driving your ultra rare classics on video as it could easily become a one of a kind example of driving such automotive jewels.

Utterly, utterly stunning car. Peak design for Bugatti. Now if only we knew where Mr Bugatti's personal Type 57C was, that would be the ultimate 'barn find' & literally priceless.

Definitely one of the most wonderful things ever created by a human being . The magnesium one you had on a few years back was beautiful and amazing but it drove like it was near dead and that really put me off , a Bugatti needs to function as it was intended too. This is fantastic to see you’ve got one out on the road making all the noises it’s supposed to. Amazing dedication there sir .

03:17 The name of the movie in which Bogart said the dashboard of the Ford resembled one from an aircraft was "High Sierra" from 1941. It co-stared the lovely Ida Lupino. (Thank you, ChatGBT. 😅🤣😂)

This is the stuff that we older car guys love to see, true elegance. If you like this one just imagine what Ralph Lauren's car is like. I was 6 or 17 when I saw my first Duesenberg, The guy driving was surprised I knew what it was (a boat tailed roadster) Ah the fond memories. ;-)

So fantastic to watch this drive and all the info Jay always gives.. Did anyone else flinch at 21:39 when Jay was searching for gears at the light and the view change suddenly made it look like Jay was backing into the car behind? WHEW!

7:30 “swapped him some Miller engines for a Bugatti chassis, which I have over there” (subtle nod off camera). Only Jay Leno can flex like that.

I used to work for the shop that took care of Peter Williamson’s car… (an original typ.57SC Atlantic) Drove his once while we sorted a drivability issue.. (before it’s last restoration by Russell.. ) It was more agile than the standard 57 but also more cramped.. I loved working on his collection from the GP cars to the Ghibli convertible .. always wished I had hit the Lottery before his collection was for sale.
