To be fair, Moon Carver and Mountain Shaper were trying to go "incognito." Cloud Retainer, on the other hand... not so much. Despite the fact that she continually tries to hide her identity, and fails, she is far too vain and egotistical to actually properly try. And Zhongli... well as we found out in the Lantern Rite before this one, the robe/coat he wears was made for him by the Geo Yaksha so he wears it to honor his fallen friend. Also, given his age and how little time he actually spent among humanity in all those years, an argument could be made that Zhongli is too old to even begin to figure out how to be anyone other than himself. I'll give him credit, though, he's doing a far better job than Cloud Retainer. Then again, he's like Moon Carver and Mountain Shaper in that he's actively trying NOT to be recognized. And of all the Adepti that aren't Madame Ping, he's the one who has lived among humanity the longest so he's picked up behaviors, mannerisms, and vernacular. I have a feeling, though, if Moon Carver and/or Mountain Shaper ever become playable, they will be as dripped out as Cloud Retainer.

I'm so tired to see always the same reaction to Moon Carver and Mountain Shaper's human forms. Yeah, they've been NPC-ed and thus doesn't guarantee they will be playable later on. But just... Guys... At least they DO LOOK LIKE random Liyuean pedestrians. Their purpose was to be unrecognizable and walk past undercover, and especially NOT to be noticed by Xianyun. Objectively, they look more like regular humans than a certain Auntie bird wearing a feather-made robe hugging her whole body like it's haute couture. Okay they're NPC-ed and probs not playable but hey, the purpose in the narration was to make them blend in the crowd.

Moon Carver and Mountain Shaper really intended to look like NPCs. They even expected Cloud Retainer to not recognize them. To be honest, Moon Carver and Mountain Shaper are more likely to be playable than Madame Ping. None of the playable characters are in the overworld so far (unless involved in quests), so it's easy to presume that permanent NPCs would not become playable, even if it can be handwaved by using different form for Streetward Rambler.

This story is straight up from the Asian parenting playbook. I know Western culture sees parenting in a different light, but hear me out: When a parent wants their child to be something (doctor, lawyer, businessman, etc.) it's usually because they wanted their children to be financially successful in the family, and something to be proud of in family gatherings with your other relatives. Comparisons tend to arise from these occasions, and you wouldn't want to be compared to your cousin who fares better in life. That's where resentment usually kicks in. If the child wants to be something else and rebels to the parent's wishes, you'd better believe the lengths that the parents will do to NOT TALK WITH YOU. It usually stems from pride, but more often than not, it comes from a sense of worrying that what you chose in life will lead you to poverty, not happiness. They won't admit that in your face though and will act tough. It's rare to have a happy ending in this kinds of stories. I'm glad Genshin did something nice here.

While I don't think a meeting between Zhongli and Neuvillette would come to blows, I don't think they'd get along either. Zhongli out there avoiding Neuvillette to the point he acts noticeably different and Neuvillette uses Zhongli's real name in his voicelines. I love Lantern Rite so much, if I ever stopped playing Genshin, its the one thing I'd always come back for. The beautiful music, the stunning cut scenes, the way they show friendships all around Liyue, its just such a wonderful event.
