Crazy. My girlfriends grandmother just died a month ago at 101 years of age. She was born in 1915 (also in Italy, but in Bergamo which is in the North), and would have been 5 years old when Rosalia was born. So crazy how such an old being is nearly the same age as this beautiful little girl that was ripped away those countless decades of blissful experience and reflection. Yet I still believe she is resting and in quiet reflection in her own solitude.

A family member - we're Italian/Sicilian decent - saw Rosalia. And her eyes do open, it is NOT a trick of light, otherwise you couldn't see her irises so well. Her eyes open. I personally believe it has to do with air pressure. Rosalie is in an airtight case, but so is a submarine, and air pressure effects people there. It's called the bends. Her eyes open and then close again due to minute changes in the surrounding air. Logical - to me. Sounds more logical than tricks of light.

I live in NY in a rural area. Many homes are 200 years old. One of my neighbors wanted to expand their kitchen so dug for a foundation. In the process they found a young boy dressed in clothing from the 1800's. He was perfectly preserved. The property owners closed up his grave and he remains under their new kitchen. Apparently it was not unusual to bury children just outside the house so they could hear and be comforted by their family inside. Our soil is mostly gravel and sand so while the area receives lots of rain fall, the nature of the soil dried out the body thus preserving it.

Yep for Alfredo and she really was a beautiful child and obviously very loved. As for heaven, that's a nice imaginary thing, but not very realistic based on the fact that nothing in our world suggests it's true. It doesn't feel good to think we die and that's the end, but something not feeling good doesn't make it untrue, sadly. It can also be offensive to make religious assumptions for other people. *Edited to add: Because when you bring your personal beliefs (even if millions of others share them, that doesn't make them any more valid) out in the open, you have the right to free speech, but that leaves your belief open to scrutiny when you display them to others, and now in this day and age, people will speak up more often than ever before, to let others know that it is offensive to them for people to assume what looks like an arrogant position on something like saying for sure someone is in heaven, or for sure someone has been reincarnated, or for sure this or that, other than what we actually know and see to be true 'for sure'. I have had the incredible experience of seeing Rosalia in 2008, prior to her apparent move to a perspex enclosure. When I saw her. she was to the very far left after you come down the entrance stairs..pretty much at the end of the tour if you head straight after the stairs and tackle it like a supermarket (up and down the aisles). The whole place is an absolute astonishing experience. It takes your breath away, and is not scary but at he same time the stuff nightmares are made of. I went there twice while I was in Palermo.. once during peak hour where you file through with a surprisingly large group (my 2nd time), and once off peak .. about 2 in the afternoon where I was accompanied by a monk from the chapel above.. 1st time was my favorite time there.. such respect for the souls there, and such an incredible display of preservation. Rosalia at that time was to the far left, behind gates and in her own little area with 2 very well preserved persons on my side of the gates to the left... I think they were husband and wife. I took no photo's because there are signs all over that say it's prohibited, wish I had tried though. Would love to go back there because I really haven't ever been in such a state of jaw dropping awe ever until I went there. It's absolutely incredible and humbling but surprisingly not as creepy as it seems once you're in there. Surprisingly peaceful actually. And no smell. That;s something I was concerned about before entering.

KnownUnknowns You're welcome. It's a beautiful preservation of another time and very humbling. I hope you get to go there too, as it's a very astonishing place and one of my favorite places I went to in my backpacking trip, I would go so far as to say that it feels very sacred when you go there off peak accompanied by one of the resident monks. I would recommend going in off peak time rather than with the masses of other tourists. When you pass down the stairs to the right and into the catacomb it literally takes your breathe away. Definitely recommend visiting if you're ever in Palermo. If you go to Italy, also walk Appia Antica in Rome.. a few catacombs and beautiful sights and ancient ruins.. that was my second fave place :)

I visited the catacombs in Palermo while a young sailor with the sixth fleet, and viewed this young girl there in her state of preservation. Here and now, over 53 years later it is almost as though I have traveled back in time. I remember trying to steal a dusty human skull from the piles of bones that lined the walls of the catacombs, only to be betrayed by the trails of dust that marked my navy blue trousers and the peacoat that I wore. As I was exiting the catacombs, I was stopped and frisked and caught with that skull, but because the Italian authorities saw me as just another half drunken sailor, they turned me in to the Shore Patrol, and my liberty was canceled, and I was sent back to my ship. How strange it is to see Rosalia once again, as she lies in eternal peace, and I approach the gates to eternity!

+LongIslandEddie Its funny that you should mention trying to steal a skull, I went to the catacombs in Paris and as you are exiting, there was a guard at the exit sitting behind a large table and on the table there were quite a few bones. I asked him, why are those bones there and he said, "oh, becuase there are always people who try to steal bones that they hide under their jackets and we catch them!" Apparently, its pretty common to try to steal bones! I for one would never steal a bone for I would be afraid of luring some spirit into my house. Yikes!

I went here when I visited Sicile. She is just as hauntingly beautiful as she is in the video except more. It felt both blissful yet incredibly sad to be looking at her. Your brain almost wants to trick you into believing she is alive and watching her fills you with such amazement you begin to believe it’s true.

This is just so beautiful and yet so sad all at the same time. My heart went bout to her father when I watched it, I know me as a mother would not know what to do if this was my little girl. This is disturbing... Once the soul departs.. the body shall return to the soil which is where man is formed.. That's why our body consist of 90% of the compounds in soil. I can never understand the PURPOSE of embalming and then burying the body in a EXPENSIVE casket when the dead body cannot know what is going on... It defeats the purpose of "passing away". To respect the dead is letting them pass way properly .

+martine. mjt The child fascinates me, I can feel the heartbreak and love of the father and after ninety six years it is almost impossible she had not recently passed. She does indeed look like a little angel but I do wonder what psychological effects the father must of had during the embalming process. If it were one of my daughters I would not be able to undertake such a course, I probably would refuse to let her out of my arms.

I just don't get it what the obsession is of people with wanting to preserve a dead person forever. They are dead, no matter how pretty an embalmer makes them look. Let nature do its work... decomposition is the natural way!

It is so sad a little girl a week short of her 2nd birthday died of nasty illness like pneumonia I had it bad when I was 5. I hate to see little ones die of diseases like that as well as cancer and others and in 2018 there has been a lot of children's death from the flu be contributed by pneumonia

I don't understand the need to preserve a loved one past the time it takes to have a funeral. But that's because I'm of the mindset that the body is the vehicle and once the soul leaves the vehicle, the body is no longer your loved one, but a discarded shell. Like after I've driven a car as far as it's going to go, I don't build it a pedestal and put it behind glass, I allow it to be taken away. I agree with taking plenty of lively pictures and videos while they're still with us, but preserving them and displaying them post-mortem, in my opinion, is wayyyy over the top.

Nina Bella Maybe before photographs were invented this would have been an option, because not being able to see your child's face whenever you want would be unbearable, but now I say, take high quality photos of them during life and let them go in peace...the mummifying thing, in my opinion, is 100% creepy.
