@Ben Louis some species are excempt. We get lots of overseas fish for the hobby, so bettas are fine.

I just know we import lots of fish as I ask ever pet store "Where were they bred?" and they say, "Germany" or "Thailand" etc etc. There are local breeders, but new stock comes in all the time. They are strict in some areas. Like reptiles, unless you own a zoo you can't get any non Australian species. Go figure eh!

@@lorenzospina3174 bettas doesnt 'work' (lack of grammar on my side) like that friend. Each betta needed to be cared for individually. Even with female if they are not compatible the female could get killed. Breeding a betta is quite tedious and they do not breed like guppies. You can get a bunch of female living together in a communal tank but they lack the beauty and charm that made male bettas very majestic. I suggest try getting just a male or 2 male betta in a different container and start from there. Always watch your water quality and feeding frequency. They are tough fish but they too can be sick with no proper care
