Xi Shi was drowned because King Yue's wife was jealous of her beauty and afraid that the king would take Xi Shi as his concubine. However, I like the other ending that Xi Shi was reunited with Fan Li and had a happy life with him. The legend had it that Fan Li was able to create wealth everywhere he went. He would become famous by creating a successful business in the local area. Then, he would share his wealth with the locals and leave the area. He did this sort of thing many times, and his reputation became a legend. Xi Shi and Fan Li came from my Mom's hometown, and I love their stories best.

What attributes were considered beautiful in historical Chinese culture?

Different periods of history had their own ideals regarding feminine beauty, here are a few characteristics that didn't change drastically throughout the many thousand years of Chinese history: 1. Black lustrous hair 2. Finely shaped eyebrows. 3. Large, bright expressive eyes. 4. Small “cherry” lips and white teeth. 5. Graceful fingers and arms. 6. Slender waist and fair skin (of course there were periods like the Tang Dynasty when plump women were deemed most graceful) 7. Tiny feet and a light elegant gait.

As for the woman in this video, Xi Shi, records describe her to be so beautiful that "were she plump, you would admire her plumpness, were she thin you would admire her for being slender". That's a whole new level of beautiful...

Actually, small eyes were considered beautiful to Ancient China and Japan. There were many historical texts and poems where it stated a woman's beauty and the small eyes are part of the attributes. For example, one tale, The Grotto of Immortals, in the Tang Dynasty mentioned small eyes to that of beautiful women _Her heart is vacant, hard to fathom,_ _Her eyes are narrow, they strongly engage my heart,_ _Turning herself around she’s already in my arms,_ _Yet to be seen whether she has an amorous voice._ Likewise, The Jeweled Chamber Secrets book written in the Six Dynasties Period characterized their ideal woman: _Ideally, a woman should be young, firm-breasted, well filled out, fine-haired, small-eyed with clear distinction between the white and black parts of the eyes; her facial and bodily skin finely textured and smooth, her voice and way of speaking pleasant to the ear; not large-boned, but rather well founded from the neck down so that no angularity shows._ Even one Jesuit, Luis Frois, noted about Asian (specifically Japanese) appreciation towards small eyes, contrast to European's value for big eyes. _2. The Europeans consider large eyes to be beautiful; the Japanese think they are horrendous and consider beautiful eyes those that are narrow to the inner corner of the eye [almond-shaped]._ The Chinese and Japanese traditionally deemed large eyes to be unattractive because it was a common physical trait among barbarians, specifically Europeans, alluding them to dogs. Hence in most Chinese and Japanese art, they depicted demons and foreigners with large eyes. There are many more examples and i can't speak for Korean since i haven't find their perspective view, but i believe they do share the same thoughts for obvious reasons. Just an interesting info i want to correct you on and if you want to read more about the beauty standards in traditional Asian culture, i highly recommended reading _The Search for the Beautiful Woman: A Cultural History of Japanese and Chinese Beauty_ .That's where i got these information come from.

Actually she is part of the main story of King of Yue, Gou Jian and King of Wu, Fu Chai, plus secondary love story between of Yue's minister Fan Li and Xi Shi usually are the 4 main characters of the legendary story. My fav is The Conquest (2006). There are countless other versions like The Rebirth of a King (2006) The Great Revival (2007) The Legend Of Xi Shi (2012) etc etc Since the story is mostly legend and so many versions has been made, a lot of these TV series has taken many artistic liberties.

In this tragic ending, the Queen of Yue fearing that the King of Yue will follow in the former King of Wu's foot steps which is strengthening their country, trying to be a hegemony of ancient China and of course starting to show interest in beautiful women aka Shi Xi. Thus the Queen ask Xi Shi to commit suicide or murdered for the sake of the country.
