This is a great and informative video. There have been so many things I've seen about the great beauties of China, but not the great scholars. I'm in love with the paintings and illustrations throughout this whole video and I'm so inspired to maybe recreate what these amazing women might have worn during their time period. Thank you!

The intro to this video really sets the tone for a clear and correct foundation for understanding this topic. Traditional values are so helpful like medicine for our souls. Well said ! What excellent choice for us to consider these four as role models for women today just like in the past. It seems their achievements can still help women and men navigate through these often misunderstood waters. Your content has become a compass for me to share with my teachers and students at our local Chinese school. Like the editing on the yin-yang symbols! Great help for those looking for a new recipe to live their lives to the fullest.

Very informative video. However, as a Chinese woman and university student, I don't feel that 女子無才便是德 should apply to my life in the modern world. The man I love will have to accept me for all my talents and education. I will never hold back on showcasing my knowledge or expertise just to ease a man's ego. A man who is confident in his abilities would not feel threatened by me, and thus there wouldn't be conflict.

I think you may have missed the point. A man's talent lies in his virtue, a woman's virtue lies in not showing off her talent. The quote implies that both men and women should emphasise on the virtue of humility and focus on building a harmonious relationship built on virtue rather than the man trying to dominate the woman with his talents or vice versa. Relationships should be cooperative, not competitive. Notice how both lines emphasise that the man and woman should emphasise on virtue. If a man is virtuous, he too won't show off his talents. Neither the man nor woman should be showing off their talents, in fact, it's quite off-putting if you're trying to build a romantic relationship. Imagine a man that only talked about how good he is at making money, dominating competitors, etc. It's equally off-putting for a woman to show up to her date and start rattling off her achievements. It's partially the reason why a large number of high performing and successful women are old and single.

Thank you for this wonderful video. The introduction was helpful to understand another little piece of Chinese culture. I taught English for a couple of years in Jinan, Shandong, -- where Li Qingzhao was born and lived before moving south -- and enjoyed visiting the Li Qingzhao memorial at Baotu Quan. Fortunately the foreign affairs officer at the school where I taught had studied Chinese classics and could read the ancient script used for the poems carved into the walls of the walkways around the memorial. Baotu Spring was a wonderful park to stroll around and a good example of a classical Chinese garden.

As a man in England researching the rich history of China. I'm involved in de stigmatising some misconceptions of Dàoism. But I also wanted to mis spell these ideas or concepts that generally downplay women. For me, it crossed my mind that the school of thought yin-yang does not display women as inferior but of equal status / quality. Thank you ! Wonderful video ❤️☯️ Blessings from the UK.

@@mykrt8541 When you mentioned this, I understand that you believed the word from the Chinese Communist Party, you could find the reason from the statement below: "Shen Yun’s mission is to revive the essence of 5,000 years of divinely inspired traditional Chinese culture, arts, and values, which have been largely destroyed in China under communist rule. In ancient times, China was known as the Land of the Divine. Everyone, from emperors to the common people, believed that their culture was a gift from heaven. They lived in harmony with the universe, believed in the oneness of heaven, earth, and humankind, and saw a connection among all things. People believed that good would be rewarded and evil would be punished, valued virtue in everything they did. Traditional Chinese culture embraced these principles for thousands of years. But the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) advocates struggle against nature and man. It sees this culture as a threat to its power, and for decades it has tried to destroy it, or sometimes co-opt it, and replace it with its own communist culture. It nearly succeeded."---source: Overview: Why is the Communist Party Going After Shen Yun?

While I can respect the cultural differences and its importance in Chinese culture I feel like the point you translated in the beginning of the video is kinda contradictory to the historical events that took place. You claimed that the verse is not to be interpreted as women shouldn't pursue scholarship but instead stay in there place as men should there's in order to maintain harmony of the binary sexes. However, nearly all of the women mentioned in this video were only able to discover their talents and greatness because their husband's died...thus the patriarchal unit of their lives, as wives, was no longer able to force/suppress them into normal "womanly duties". If the sexes do best when they are in harmony and stay in their own lane...why is it that these women celebrated for their talent and contributions to scholarship and history were only able to do what they did because their husband's died and they were no longer pushed to occupy a woman's destined role? If the women had not pursed "yang" and their husband's survived...even though they were capable of great talent and might have had interest in scholarship they almost 100% wouldn't have been able to. I just see this as a fault with the outdated Daoist belief system which claims humbleness and humility from women when they really intend to suppress and control women.

@@masterkoi29 and? You don’t need to be chinese to recognize misogyny and sexism. She follows up her statement by saying “makes sense for women to draw back a little” ,as if it is the responsibility of women to be a green screen for a man, while completely forgetting that if we followed confucianism word by word, she wouldn’t even be allowed to make this video because she is literally displaying her talent and exposing herself. Misogyny has always been a flaw in many ancient philosophies. No need for your virtue signaling, ancient times were patriarchal almost everywhere. Also if you plan to reply with “chinese feminism is different “ then don’t lmao, even feminists in China don’t tolerate this.
