There is somthing called " dig" in crawling and allows you to lock your rear wheels and drive your front while turning so you can kind of pivot your front end around. It may help on the tight turns. Also when you do rear steer it can help a lot to have it independently controlled from the front so you can crab walk or only turn the rear to get around some objects.
@DigitalJedi Жыл бұрын
Going to be implementing these for my next Scrap Mechanic crawler build for sure. Is there a preferred suspension setup for IRL crawlers or does it vary a lot?
@flyingmunk8956 Жыл бұрын
@DigitalJedi mine is pretty stock set up. Up and down really. But you want them to be at an angle... like for front shock angled forward like 30-40 degrees ish. Not sure. But that will give you more articulation " flex " to help keep wheel contact. High belly Tires in front of bumpers. Low center of gravity. So light up top and Heavy in axles These are just my opinions though.

Man, the time and dedication it must have taken to make this is awe inspiring. But then that miniature model of the entire thing popping out had me grinning like a child. Nice crawler scrapman, would love to see you do this again with some of the fan suggestions!

Independent rear steering would’ve been another option. That way you can put all four tires exactly where you want them

Hey Scrapman, In real life, 4-wheel steering is almost always implemented with half or less of the front's steering angle for the rear. I dunno about Scrap Mechanic, but in Trailmakers, something like 30° front and 10-15° rear works really well. You get the benefits of all-wheel steering in terms of sharpness, but you also don't get the rear end swinging out so wide around corners. Since there's always at least some slip angle, having lower angle on the rear wheels actually ends up making it track much closer to putting the rear tread marks right on top of the fronts. It also just feels a lot more intuitive since most cars have front steering only. Similarly, when I have 6 or more wheels, I offset the steering angle symmetry to be between the middle and rears, so for six wheels, for example, from front to rear, 30°, 10°, -10°, or 30°, 5°, -20°

Fun fact: Based on the ISRCC rules, your first run was actually a successful run at ca 8,5 minutes. Every Gate you pass is -2 on the score board, hitting a gate or boundary marker is 10 points each. And reverse is 1 point each. A run only counts as DNF if you get 40 points at the same time, or if you take more than 10 minutes. So you actually finished that run below 0 points, which is really good for your first run.

For those of you that really enjoyed this video and felt a strange satisfaction, you couldn't quite place your finger on it. I'd like to suggest to you a fun but expensive hobby of RC Rock Crawling. If you enjoy mechanical things and taking things apart and modifying things. This is a hobby for you to check out. Feel free to ask any questions. I wish someone had introduced me to Tiny Trucks at a much younger age. Many of you, at this point, might be thinking of cheap Walmart-brand RC cars. What I'm referring to is, in many cases, 1:10 scale licensed truck parts. This is the world of Hobby RC. Join me in the rabbit hole MWahahahahhaha

I havn't done any rock crawling, but i have done some offroad, and hung around offroad guys. I also love cars and designing... and that's one reason why I got Scrap mechanic myself. Well Some of kAN's creations got me getting it... Anyhow, I'd say the largest issue of your designed rock crawler, was the wheelbase. While it would have helped if yuo would have had literally vertical steps around 2-3 blocks high to go up from flat ground. but for everything else, it was excessive. That you countered with 4 wheel steering, which definitely has it's upsides, but in my "very expert" opinion 2-4 block shorter wheelbase would have been noatable benefit, and if added with 4 wheel steering where rear wheels turn less would have been all around better solution.

@jamiep3196 Жыл бұрын
A shorter wheelbase may have helped as the rear wheels would cut in less reducing the need for 4 wheel steering, It would also reduce the risk of grounding out the modle of tge vehicle, One massive example was at the end of the log bridge you couldn't turn until the front was nearly off the cliff, if the creation was shorter you could have started turning much sooner, also the cone knocked off in the first run may not have been hit as you could have been passed it by the time you were leaning over.

You could’ve also used skid steering instead of four wheel steering.
@DigitalJedi Жыл бұрын
Skid steering isn't actually that great for something like this. Dragging your wheels around sideways to turn can get you stuck against the sides of things and then you can't turn. The beat option here is fully independent front and rear steering to enable crab walking.
