Easy bake ovens are way less dangerous than a real oven with their temperatures (though still hot enough to cause serious burns especially with prolonged exposure) but what's important in being a reasonable parent is sizing up your kid fairly and explaining it's a toy, but it's a toy that's still dangerous in the same way the adult version is; it's hot and you can burn yourself. If you play with and teach the kid to use it, and they seem competent, leaving it in the kitchen is absolutely reasonable and I assume that's more or less how it went with your mom. The potential for danger exists within any object, depending on how its utilized, who used it, and what they mean to accomplish versus what plays out. Pogo sticks are a way dumber dangerous toy - with riding bicycles or even go-karts/motorized vehicles, you can claim it helps train kids for more serious dangers faced living as an adult. With a pogo stick, what danger are you preparing for in adulthood by bouncing around on a stick and hoping you don't fall wrong on a hard surface? Set a world record in an underground jackhammer rodeo without injuring if not paralyzing or even outright killing yourself depending on which bones break on landing? Though for a more specific toy in the vein of this video if you read down here, look into the (roughly) 1950's era gas powered pogo stick. Whatever you think of pogo sticks as a toy, I think we can all agree that adding a combustion engine to make you bounce even higher is not an improvement to safety.

It wasn’t so much of a toy, but my mom showed me a bear shaped bar of soap that was fairly popular when she was a kid in the 70’s. When freed from the airtight plastic package and exposed to air the bear would grow “fur” which many believed to be a form of mold, obviously. Kids were encouraged to use this moldy soap day in and day out by using the incentive of a prize being hidden in the middle of the bar of soap. Moldy soap seems pretty counter productive, but hey, the 70’s were wild times.
