god forbid someone to put a magazine, on the you know, normal side of a rifle
@Shaun_Jones
@Shaun_Jones 2 ай бұрын
Technically speaking, a side or top feeding magazine can improve reliability since the magazine spring doesn’t have to fight gravity as much, but this is a problem that no longer exists for any country capable of forging decent spring steel.

I mean, you also would be able to get alot Lowe to the ground with a side or top mounted magazine, that was actually a big reason why the Brita built the bren gun the way they did.

I think the goal here was maximizing accuracy by volume, which makes me think that some of these could have potentially been somewhat effective. The shotgun, especially, could have been amazing in a close quarters, suppression, and walking fire role imho

@Part.No.1xbil.Prod.Tp.MXMVIII 2 ай бұрын
@@mr.international2778 Side-mounted mags are ideal for use in the prone position because you can operate the weapon while keeping yourself as low to ground as possible. That's why the MP-18, Bren, and other models of the era loaded from anywhere but the bottom and the XM16 series was issued with 20 rnd box mags. Bottom loading rifles are just ergonomically superior and allow the operator more mobility when moving through enclosed spaces like vehicles, forts, bunkers, trenches, and buildings; which were the conditions assumed fighting would take place had the cold war gone hot. Hence their predominance today. Meanwhile in Vietnam: The enemy was using full and intermediate caliber rifles like Chinese production Mausers and surplussed Mosins, combined with SKSs and AK variants with the occasional RPD or DP-28 being deployed from invisible positions. Pretty much all of these weapons could punch clean through the bush meaning that micro terrain was the only available cover and fighting in the jungle consisted mostly of men rolling around on their stomachs and firing blindly into the direction of assumed contact. The only way to stay alive in those conditions was to become as minimal a target as possible and fire enough rounds to gain fire superiority so you could identify the location of the enemy and clear them out with grenades. TLDR: as wack as the prototypes are, I understand the logic behind all of them completely. Buddy just isn't an engineer and didn't know how to execute the concept.

Side mounted magazines made it easier to get much lower to the ground than bottom mounted mags but didn't mess with the sights like top mounted mags, so it does make a bit of sense.

Thankfully, history left the job of developing a practical family of bullpup weapon systems to the Austrians (Steyr Aug Para/Commando/H-BAR/etc.) of which the Australians would eventually adopt as their primary infantry rifle. Though if these crazy designs and the modern EF88 is anything to go off of... they do seem fond of ventilation holes.

Can someone explain to me why beltfed sh otguns just aren't a thing? Did the paper hulls not play nice with belts? Or was it some sort of low effective range thing due to drag coefficeint of buck? IDK, but "accuracy through volume of fire" seems like it should have a beltfed sh otgun next to it in the dictionary. Also: I need to see that SM G fired. Intentional firing method is "gangsta style."

IMHO Belt need to stay fixed on the cartridge so that the cartridge wouldn't slip off the belt, that's why the belt link generally use the neck of the cartridge as a holding point like the m9 .50cal belt link or for higher caliber like 20mm the belt often have a tab protubing in the rear and using the rim of the cartridge to make sure the ammunition wouldn't slip off and jam the feeding system or just break the belt. The 12g being pretty much straight wall, rimmed and having soft paper or plastic shell would make it difficult to use metallic links IMHO Altough some belt fed shotgun exist kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4G1cp2opN2fgKssi=TeCb4aOqDCzSlygt

@@chibani- I've seen that exact video actually, fantastic gadget he has there. But yeah, the soft hulls being the issue were what I thought, and that makes sense. Tho, I've seen both solid brass (and also partially zinc?) hulls, and steel and aluminim shells for other cartridges. Curious why you didn't have anyone trying non-brass sh otshell hulls, if cost was a concern over brass.

I think it's one of those "sounds great for a specific situations, but is too specific to be worth it" ideas. Specifically, if you're going to increase accuracy by volume of fire, why not just issue more accurate and higher ROF assault rifles instead of issuing a separate weapon that will only really be effective at close range only? Even then, at the end of the day, the solution to better accuracy ended up not giving soldiers higher ROF guns or guns with any sort of hyper-burst, but just issuing them optics. Also I think the SMG drawing (and really most of the drawings) was just weirdly oriented, with the side view on top and upside down.
