Hey Shawn, I don't know if you'll see this here but I do have a recommendation for a story. Here's a quick synopsis from Wikipedia. Juliane Margaret Beate Koepcke (born 10 October 1954), also known by her married name Juliane Diller, is a German-Peruvian mammalogist who specialises in bats. The daughter of German zoologists Maria and Hans-Wilhelm Koepcke, she became famous at the age of 17 as the sole survivor of the 1971 LANSA Flight 508 plane crash; after falling 3,000 m (10,000 ft) while strapped to her seat and suffering numerous injuries, she survived 11 days alone in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest until local fishermen she came across were able to take her by canoe to a more populated area. If that doesn't have you foaming at the mouth then you're not the man I thought you were. ;]

I really don’t want to be “that” guy who blames the victims but those first two divers absolutely got what was coming to them. They had been explicitly warned not to go to that cave and were still only students. I understand curiosity is a powerful motivator but a diver has to be able to temper that curiosity with reasoning and caution; this incident proving they had no business diving in the first place.

@@asylumental Absolutely what I was thinking too. People obviously react differently under pressure but the thing is: cave diving is an extremely hazardous activity and the only people who should be engaging in it are people who keep their cool no matter what purely because of cases like this, anything can happen and you have to be able to deal with that. The fact he completely lost it like he did just highlights the sheer level of skill and self control required for cave diving. Run every nightmare scenario in your head first, all of the worst things that could go wrong during the dive: If you feel there is even the remotest chance of you panicking during any of the situations, you shouldn't be in the water in the first place.

I’m not sure if one is honestly better than the other, but I’d argue that Ed can certainly check that box as well at least. IMO if I ever had the bright idea of going cave diving. But then something went wrong, I’d at least have full confidence that one way or another that Ed will definitely get me back home. I may not make it there alive. But I know he won’t miss at least tho. Not saying Mike couldn’t do that same thing. Just that if I had “one phone a friend” pass, in a bad cave diving situation. I’m calling Ed first, that’s all. He’s both extremely good at what he does. As well as the fact that having a completely silted out cave doesn’t even make him remotely uncomfortable. He can go in completely blind in a cave that he’s never been in before, and always hit his mark 98.9% of the time on the first shot. Idk about anyone else. Mike did everything right, he remained calm throughout the whole ordeal and tried to help Shane as much as he could, even after losing the line, having his suit torn and losing a fin. He also didn’t abandon Shane until he passed, then focused on getting himself out. It’s remarkable that he was able to remain calm through all that. In those kinds of situations panic not only “can” but “will” get you killed. If it’s not done already, people should be stress tested to ensure they can remain calm in situations like these, it would increase their chances of survival.

Stay away from people like Shane! As it is told Mike gently moved to allow shane to wriggle free. In reality he was almost certainly stomping him in the face to fight for his life. If someone starts freaking out in a life or death situation get away from them by any means possible. I hope Mike found peace after the incident. I've had some close calls climbing but been lucky enough to downclimb or turn back before it escalated. Still terrifies me how dangerous a panicking person can be though.
@lacylaizure6540 Жыл бұрын
Part of me thought, "I would never panic like this and put my friend in danger. What an asshole." Then I thought about the time my boyfriend and I were standing a little less than waist deep in the ocean. I am terrified of sharks so I am always on edge. I felt something brush my leg, and I instantly climbed him like a tree! I did it so fast that my brain didn't kick back in until all my limbs were out of the water. He laughed and said it was a foot or so long fish. 😅 I got in trouble when I was about 16 for saving someone from drowning. We were on a beach at a lake for memorial day, I was watching this lady swim after a raft blowing away in the wind, no one else had eyes on her, and I thought "that is how you drown." Not a minute later I hear call for help with a hand in the air, and took off running. By the time I got to her she went fully under water so I had to reach around for her. Luckily when I pulled her up, she was still breathing but completely limp, and actually had no idea I had a hold of her. I'm not sure if it was shock or if she was so hammered she didn't know what was going on, but it was probably what kept me out of danger. I can swim, but I am not at all a strong swimmer. It hasn't been until watching these videos that I started understanding just how dangerous people can be.
@misterb3577 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. It reminds me of how we're always told to go for the lifesaver or a trained lifeguard before jumping in to save a drowning person. Because if you're not specifically trained in rescuing someone who's drowning, there's an incredibly high risk of them killing you in their panic to stay alive.
@lacylaizure6540 Жыл бұрын
@@misterb3577 agreed. To be honest though, I would probably do it again in a heartbeat. It was such a natural reaction when I saw her, that I just went into autopilot. I imagine I would probably think twice if it were a grown man but I can't be certain. Now if I were in a situation where a lifeguard was readily available instead of a bunch of drunk people, I would easily grab them. I just knew I was the only one watching and no one could hear her above the partying. Her family didn't even know what was going on until I had her almost back to the shore.
@mehashi Жыл бұрын
@@lacylaizure6540 I'm glad you had the good fortune to match your good intentions. My best friend had a very similar incident trying to rescue someone. He was in a kayak, guy in trouble grabbed the side of the boat and tried to climb in while panicking. Pulled the whole boat underwater. Then tried to climb up my friend to get out of the water, pushing him under the whole time. Friend did manage to push him towards the shore where the guy then started berating him for his "attitude" when the guy just nearly killed him. Such selflessness given, and only selfishness in return. My most scary experience, leading someone down 500m of slope with a few inches of hard snow. He'd scrambled up an arete in walking boots and then slipped down 20m or so. Only bruised and cut, but he was so scared of slipping again he kept leaning all his weight right into me, grabbing me violently every time he wobbled or I tried to pull away. He was twice my size so was almost pushing and pulling me right off my feet. If not for my crampons I am certain he would have killed me while trying to help. This is on a 45 degree slope with sharp boulders, you'd be very lucky to survive if you didnt immediately self arrest. I went to him to help but by the end I was right at that threshold of deciding whether to act in self defence. Definitely makes you confront some unpleasant truths about yourself, and the other person.
@lacylaizure6540 Жыл бұрын
@mehashi as for your friend's story, that is terrible. We don't expect anything in return, but a little gratitude would have been nice, especially since he could have killed him. Concerning your story, that sounds so nerve-racking. That is kind of why I said I might reconsider if it were a full-grown man. Someone scared with that much weight on you can really overpower you, especially on unsure footing in your case. I'm glad you made it out OK. I'm not a fan of heights so that sounds terrifying!

If you have any fear of dying, don't dive. You can't panic underwater, whatsoever. Treat diving underwater in significant depths as if you're in space. It is so infuriating when people don't follow extremely important instructions, but t hen it must be even worse when their decision NOT to follow instructions puts your life in jeopardy too. From kids not listening to basic instrutions to "professionals" not following protocol. Shane was such a liability for Mike and yet he tried to help him more than once. Someone who is panicking is very dangerous and will hurt/kill others.

Wow, I've actually been to this blue hole once, a couple decades ago. I was a teen at the time, and the stories about bones at the bottom spooked me out from swimming. We were visiting distant family who owned a ranch nearby. Family story says that she used to own the land the blue hole was on as part of the ranch, but sold it because of liability issues. The family connection is gone though, and I can't check up to see how much is true or just family myth. Spooky to recognize one of the sites from an episode.

For the non-Americans, you can be sued by people who hurt themselves on your property. Its referred to as 'duty of care'. Your liability goes up and down, depending. You have less liability to a trespasser, but more if there is no warning sign or attempt to make a manmade danger safe. Your liabiity goes up if trespassers are known to be frequent. Your liability goes up if the trespasser is a child according to the 'attractive nuisance doctrine', because children don't have good sense. Its one of the reasons Americans try to prevent people from roaming at will on property and might destroy an attraction if it is a threat to life.

As someone who used to do some rock climbing and caving, and thus knowing how easily things can go wrong or how fast you can get lost in a cave, I've never personally understood the draw of cave diving. I get some of it of course, the want to see stuff that few or no others have seen etc, but to me the risks far outweigh the draw. Easy enough to get lost in a cave without water, with silt being stirred up with every movement you make in most of these places it is amazing there aren't more tragedies honestly.

My dad who is a marine biologist that works writing now after putting in 50 years at a famous Institution and taught at others told me of some very sketchy dives both in subs and SCUBA related. Apparently the sub opeperators are ex-fighter pilots as they can remain calm while figuring out a solution like when they explored a cave 2,000 feet down and wedged the ALVIN in the cave because the roof was difficult to see and sloped down. When I was stationed in Hawai’i, I got certified as an open water diver. I remember beautiful dives like Three Tables, a shipwreck about 5 miles off the coast and the Haleiwa trench. For the trench, you walk about 1/4 mile out in waist deep water then it just drops to about 120 feet. Even though my qualification was only open water, I’d spend every weekend in the water. There were 5 or 6 other guys in my unit who were also certified so you could at least find 1-2 guys willing to go diving on the weekends. Plus, equipment and tank rental from MWR was cheap. This is all preface to talk about the time I saw panic in just a small, one chamber cave because of a shadow. In Hawai’i they have native lobsters and you can hunt them during certain periods. When I was there it was only at night when in season and only by hand - they don’t have giant claws like Maine lobsters. Anyway, we descended into a cave with a large group of tourist divers. The cave entrance was about 10 feet across. We would go in looking for lobsters and when we saw them grab them up and check their size against these pre-made rulers. If they were legal, into the bag they go. If not, we released them. In the frenzy of our grabbing at lobsters and the dancing of our flashlights a giant shape cast a shadow crossing in front of one of the beams. A tourist panicked and thought it was a shark. It was just a rather large sea turtle that went into the cave to rest a bit and got annoyed so swam out of the cave. I was near the entrance and the panicked woman was kind of crowd surfing everyone between her and the entrance to get out. She knocked off my goggles, ripped my mouthpiece out and kneed me in the face while kicking to get out. I can’t say I was panicked or thought I’d drown. I knew we had plenty of air, no restrictions and I’d trained enough to gather myself and replace my breather then find my goggles on the cave floor. But, when we surfaced the woman apologized thinking the shadow was a shark and she panicked. I can easily see how when the stakes are significantly raise and the dive more technical and treacherous, panic can set in quickly.
