Anthony Pellicano's job was to make problems disappear for celebrities. And he was good at it, until one fateful, utterly unbelievable incident.

He called my work once in 2002, right before his legal troubles first made the news. I worked as the head of on-site security in the headquarters of a large tech company that had hundreds of retail locations all over North America. He called looking for information on an employee of the company, and the switchboard folks sent the call my way for some reason. I told him I couldn't discuss employees with him. But he was good at what he did. He kept talking to me, being personable, asking me about my interests, offering to hook me up with some writing work in L.A., and all kinds of other stuff. Eventually, I didn't give him any info on the person he was looking for, but I did tell him that employee wasn't in my database, so he was probably an employee at one of the retail offices. I honestly shouldn't have even told him that, but he was GOOD. He knew how to work people, and he got that info out of me. A couple months later he got arrested and made the news, and my blood went cold. I followed the story as it unfolded, and had the weird feeling that some paralegal in an office somewhere listened to a recording of my call and dismissed it as irrelevant to their case... but I was still part of the evidence.

People have become less personable......for good and bad......since "junk calls" "email scams" etc....are now almost daily. People now have their defenses up. In the past people talked more? . Importing theatrical Godfather tactics was ridiculous in Los Angeles.
