The Most Dangerous Place In Florida Is Absolutely Nuts

Very rarely have a been to a place that's this dangerous. But is it that bad?
Everyone knows about how dangerous Miami is. We know about all the crazy meth head rednecks running around the panhandle. But there’s a place in Florida where the crime is the worst of all. And it’s probably a place you haven’t even heard of before.
I had just left Immokalee, a farming community that’s the poorest place in the state, and was on my way to Miami. But before I got there, I needed to see what’s been called the most dangerous place in the state. So in early May, I spent the afternoon in Florida City.
A lot of people in Florida don’t even know where Florida City even is. You can understand why. It’s not very big. It’s way out at the entrance to the Everglades, in the far reaches of Miami-Dade County. If you know the area, it’s where the famous tourist stop Robert Is Here is located. You know the place - where you buy odd canned goods, weird-looking produce, and feed all the farm animals.
It’s just south of Homestead, which is also a crime-riddled community. They call this part of the county south Dade. Florida City is actually the southern most city in the USA that’s not on an island.
All around the area looks pretty unassuming. It’s basically farms, national forests and preserves as far as you can see.
But as we’d see, it’s not the gators, panthers, wild pigs and snakes that you need to worry about out here. There’s a lot of really out of control gun tootin crazy people who live in this part of the state. And we’re going to learn about them more right now.

You are so right. I only checked the areas I was interested in living, I wish I had learned about the whole state. The crimes here are often and brutal. Pasco County is in the news daily. I’ve never lived in a state that has so many violent crimes. We came here from Colorado and are regretting it but we have parents who are elderly and ill. Maybe someday we will move back to CO when we are not needed here anymore.

I’ve been in every hood in south Florida for decades working. There is poverty and gang culture. You’ll also meet some of the best people in those areas. I’m not afraid to say it because I do not give af about being politically correct. Florida City, Ghoulds, Liberty City, Miami Gardens, Opa Locka. Lots of poverty and lots of drugs. I’m pulling for a recovery.

Miami native here. When you drive through Miami Gardens, Opa-Locka, North Miami, which are their own cities, you feel like you gotta be on point, because ish can pop off any given moment. The same feeling you feel down in Miami neighborhoods like: Little Haiti, Allapattah, Brownsville, Liberty City, and Overtown. You don’t get that feeling in Homestead or Florida City. Nonetheless, you gotta be aware of your surroundings everywhere. Just giving you my perspective.

I agree. The county in Georgia where I grew up is one of the poorest actually made the National news back in the recession of 2008. I never felt unsafe still didn’t when I went home last year. My Grandmother leaves her keys in the car even though our first night her about that. Honestly I didn’t realize we were poor until I left.

I also did not crime. I built things like a Frankenstein bike made from 3 bikes or a spud gun but nothing criminal. We had a lot of empty lots to do it in. That experience served me well as a combat engineer in the Marines.

I used to frequent the Versailles, a great Cuban restaurant in Little Havana (Miami). Always crowded and often had to park behind on the neighborhood streets day or night. The neighborhood seemed nice and well kept though every home had a fence and bars on the doors/windows. I would still go except I just don't get into Miami much anymore.

I lived in homestead for 19 years and I’ve seen crime in Florida city on a firsthand basis…. My vehicle was shot more than 10 times just sitting outside of a friends house. You can’t go to the police because there will be retaliation for snitching, mind you I was doing nothing wrongs besides being a a suburban raised Hispanic white kid in the wrong place. This mayor is absolutely full of crap. The low iq politicians in Florida are appalling. One of my classmates was shot and killed at Blakey park in Florida city. The amount of crackheads and transients roaming the streets are unbelievable. Florida city is worse than all of the cities in northern Miami dade on a per capita basis.

The streets appear to be in pretty good condition. Most of the homes are modest but in good repair and most yards appear to be mowed. There is quite a bit of vacant land that may be parks or just undeveloped. But it looks clean.

Some of the homes have bars on the windows, and even around the AC unit. That’s an extremely bad sign! From what I’ve heard from people familiar with that area the entire nature of South Dade changed drastically after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. A lot of hardworking families left places like Florida City and Homestead after Andrew, and moved farther north in Florida. Unfortunately, a number of the people that replaced the old residents after Andrew are not exactly upstanding citizens.

You can solve 90% of the issues in communities of color by focusing on providing high-quality basic education, providing basic job skills, and emphasizing home ownership over rentals by actively discouraging deadbeat landlords from yanking their permits and banning multifamily homes, and consciously building entry-level homes geared towards the community. You can't program poverty away with park and rec programs. You have to rebuild the community.

Poverty is linked to crime. Like do you not study economics, and it’s relation to poverty (which is always fueled by crime) this is why west Palm beach Florida sees less crime than Jacksonville Florida. Lack of good strong moral fathers and lack of belief in God the Father is one of the reasons why people are hedonistic and commit crimes. Poverty is correlated with crime. the mayor was in his feelings, but yes Florida City is not as bad as it used to be. That is because a lot of jobs (Amazon) are coming there, a lot of new housing and diversity. Central Americans who in the fields and their grown children now buying townhomes for $300k, and the folks who don’t want to work hard are getting pushed out. A lot of those same folks were pushed out of Miami back in the 80s and 90s, and they resettled in Jacksonville. And now Jacksonville is the most dangerous major city in the state, not Miami. If you’re not working hard, South Florida doesn’t have time for you, and I say that as a grandchild of Haitian/Barbadian immigrants

I drove all over South FL for work 20 years ago and having to cross Miami anytime from 11am to 2pm was impossible while everyone went to lunch. Some of it is still paradise though not super 'squeaky' clean. Florida City was completely ravaged by Hurricane Andrew back in 1992 and never really fully recovered from it. Miami still has its problems, hasn't fully recovered from the bloody drug wars that happened back in the 1980's. The panhandle has some of its own problems as well, same as central Florida though I live here and in Polk County with the best sheriff in the business with Sheriff Grady Judd, but it is certainly overall paradise compared to California where they have a very corrupt governor along with other very corrupt politics in Pelosi and Maxwell to name a few who's policies that have transformed that state's landscape socially and economically into a complete hellhole with skyrocketing crime from lawlessness, high population of homeless people with block after block filled with tents, skyrocketing cost of living now unaffordable by the average person where a one bed room apartment averages $1,800 a month, high as over $3,000 in San Fran and $2,600 in LA.

I had always wanted to drive across Alligator Alley, and I did so back in 2012. (I *did* see an alligator! 😄) On that trip, I drove down into the Keys. Just as I was getting into the Miami area, I refilled my gas tank; and I remember the attendant telling me to look directly in front of me and not look at anybody to the side of me as I drove through Miami towards US 1. The only other times I have ever heard anybody say that to me were in far south Chicago and Gary; and also in St. Louis. Jarring, to say the least.

Sounds about right. I managed a self storage facility in Florida City for 30 yrs and only had 3 issues during that time, none violent. There was the time that bullets hit the building, or the time the gangsters were pulled over in our parking lot with loaded ak s , 2 blocks prior to their destination. Then there was the drunk who drove around town one Saturday, taking out our fence and about a dozen other targets before his drunkmobile finally passed out. It's a small city with big growing pains. US1, SR997, and Florida Turnpike all bottleneck in The 33034. Over 50,000 vehicles pass every day traveling to the Florida Keys or Everglades National Park or Biscayne National Park. It is a great place to do business.

Behavior is really learned at home, but starting early on at schools is a good idea. I lived in rural central Florida in the mid to late '70s, and crime didn't seem to be all that bad. I guess I'm thinking of " the old Florida" , and that things have changed dramatically. At least this guy is trying to make things better...if everyone tries a little, things improve. Honestly, every state has its share of bad neighborhoods. You always have to be aware of your surroundings. In terms of size, Florida City is quite small compared to Chicago or Oakland CA. I'm not sure how population size comes into play here but it's certainly not a good neighborhood by any standards.

He's on the right track about respectful policing. Showing people and their property respect is something that hasnt happened in a lot of poor or high crime areas and its a part of the cycle. Somebody has to be the adult and start the respect circle it makes a huge difference. I come from this type of environment, Youngstown Ohio (but now a Florida res.), so I speak from experience. Its super easy to hate police who treat you like shit every time there is contact. I disagree with his views of guns but its understandable from his position. Nick's videos are becoming about so much more than simple visit vlogs. Good job man. 👏

In the spring of 2022, my mom and I flew down to Miami for a vacation in Key West and South Beach. After we picked up our rental car, we drove from the airport all the way to Key West. We drove through Florida City, since it's the gateway to the Keys. It struck me as a bit run-down and on the poorer side, but I wasn't aware of the history/crime rates in this place till today. Honestly, we only went through some of the more main/centralized parts though, so I can't say too much. I don't think we stopped here at all. Didn't feel like a place that I would be comfortable stopping in, though. Although personally, I find it a bit distasteful that some are trashing that mayor for being positive about his city/trying to turn it around. He genuinely seems to want to make things better for the people there. It's his home - if you take pride in where you live, wouldn't you want to lift up your home, even in its ugliest moments?

There are places like this all over the country. I heard of a county in Mich where all of the dopers and gangbangers that had three or more arrest. Were rounded up and told that they were out of business. They were told to move or know that their next arrest was going to send them to prison for a maximum sentence. If there is only 12000 people they could probably put a big dent in the problem with about 4 or 5 bus loads of knuckleheads.

I live in Homestead. West Homestead and Florida city is a small poor farming community. It use to be alot worse.They mainly rob the migrant workers and they mainly shoot each other lol. East Homestead by the airforce base has a lot of new developments. Florida city is no where near as bad as liberty city, overtown, opa locka and Miami gardens they have a lot more murders then Florida city. Also belle glades is a lot worse. Fun fact Florida city police chief is Carlos Taylor the father of the great Miami Hurricane Sean Taylor. The Florida city Razorbacks are national football pop Warner champions. Alot of good football players have come out of Florida city and Homestead.
