Even trying to find information on the internet about tidal flow and depths is nearly impossible. It’s amazing that in this day and age there are still unexplored places like this that we dont fully understand.

My dad and I went night fishing there when I was around the same age and we were in water a little over our ankles and we were having a hard time because the current was so strong. That was in 1984 and it looks more dangerous now. There is a lot less beach where we were then. We were on the bay side.

I've caught tons of flounder at the pass, best spots are the pilings that support the bridge. It was in the 60's when the bridge was built there, there was a gentleman that lived there that everyone called Rooster (he kept chickens), I think his real name was Collins but not sure any more. That was a good place to get stuck on the beach, you could always go get Rooster and he would take his tractor and pull you out, he would never take money for it that's the way people were back then. I pulled a man out of the water there one time, he lived, I pulled a woman out in the mid 70's, she was life-flighted to Galveston where she later died. If you have to fight the sand braking from under your feet the best thing is get down on all four and crawl as fast as you can, come up for air and keep crawling, forget about your fishing gear it's going to drown.

I fish there alot recently. Police say stay out of the water or a fine, but I see people every weekend done there in the water and even small children swimming where its posted no swimming or wading. I fish the surf area along the beach and let me tell you... when wading out to cast big baits there are swift currents under the water especially where the first waves break. You may think that water is only knee deep but the first gut is 5ft deep at even low tide and deep holes are everywhere. Its dangerous. Cause once you hit by a big wave and knocked sideways you can be carried into currents faster than you can stand back up especially if your trying to hang on to a 15ft surf rod. Never wear waders. its a death trap.

I just started fishing in Galveston a lot lately and the pass is one of the first places I went to with a buddy, we got in the water to cast and let me tell you that current was strong as fuck and sand is always moving from under your feet. We stayed for about 30-45 minutes before deciding the current was just to crazy and decided to go fish the north jetti and crystal Beach instead. We did pull in a decent shark when we retrieved our lines, could barely feel him fighting because of the current. We’ve been catching big reds over on the crystal Beach side though!

I remember the KOA around the corner on the West side of the bridge. It went belly up after Alicia hit in 83, never recovered. But there was always a place to launch your boat for fishing around the area. Haven't been fishing in years, so I don't know if that boat launch is gone or not

Back around 1981, a black friend of mine came into work with a beauty of a trout and put it in the freezer. I asked him where he got it and he said he was wading the surf at San Luis Pass using mirror lures. I asked him to take me and within a week I had my fishing vest and African Safari hat to hold my lures and we were going fishing. The time was very early in the morning in May and it was squally with rain cells roaming around. My buddy was 6' and I am only 5'8" and we had to get to the third sandbar which luckily I was able to fish by jumping a little when the bigger waves came in. There were a lot of guys lined up out there and everybody was catching nice size trout. My buddy had an Ambassador 5000 and I saw him get a little backlash and he turned his back to the waves to take care of it. I was concentrating on fishing but I heard a noise and looked around to see my buddy's hat floating and he was in a panic with the fishing pole in his mouth. I took a step towards him and he pulled the pole out of his mouth and screamed "No, don't move - there is an undertow". Well just as he said that my feet both got pulled out from underneath me and away I go. We were wearing fishing vests but no waders and so we were not panicking, just floating on our backs, feet in front of us and we just tried moving closer to shore. We finally got to the bank maybe 50 yards from the bridge and we had started out about 1000 yards from the bridge. We got out of the water and my buddy had lost the inside of his reel and his glasses. We stayed a little while hoping maybe something would wash up but nothing ever did. We started walking back towards the car just about the time an ambulance was crossing the bridge coming from the Freeport side. As we got closer, people were gathering closer to the water and we walked up to someone and asked what was going on. The guy said "There was a black guy and a white guy out there fishing and the undertow took them away". My buddy and I looked at one another and said "We can't say it was us, there may have been another black and white guy fishing that had the same problem". So, we got in our car and sped away....

The pass is getting smaller yet! When I was a kid, the pass was as wide as the bridge. The water went all the way to the toll booth. I have seen it get smaller and smaller over the years. There is never a reason to get wet there. You can catch plenty of fish casting from the sand. I have been in ankle deep water in the surf about a mile from the pass and had a hard time standing! I knew someone who used to fish the pier there and he told me he saw an entire family drown - One was trying to save the other. That is a very very dangerous place! Back in the 70s when my dad was a teen, he was walking along the beach at SLP probably about calf-deep. He said he suddenly just disappeared under the water like walking into a manhole. The same thing happened to me there (once in 83' - I learned). I was standing in belly deep water and the bottom just disappeared from underneath me. It was an outgoing tide and I got a little to far out, which wasn't very far, but an example of how the sand literally shifts with the tide, and it can pull you out just like the sand. I made it back as I reacted quickly.

Dont know if 16-18ft is deep but thats what my depth finder at the center of the pass, on the surfside side coming from the gulf that side is shallow 2-5ft and it extends out a good way into the (galveston beach) gulf then theres a drop 10-15ft. So both sides of this bar theres deep drops along with the tides incoming out going colliding. You get a washasmachine!! On heavy load setting! That little bay that formed on the Galveston side is likely a good spot to put a yak in, but whoo boy you better have your life jacket on. Just looks like a lot of current flowing around that point.

Great video, almost a "public alert" warning of sorts. Square waves are at 90 degrees to each other, not 45 degrees, and your video showed them very clearly. Wow! No place to wade that is for sure. More signs, more warnings needed I think. Thanks!!!
@BeachBomberFishing
@BeachBomberFishing 4 жыл бұрын
Oops, error, thanks for the correction! Duh, square angles 90°. Unfortunately theres a small percentage of the population that dont read the signs. I made this video to reach out to people and warn them. Thanks for watching!
