A couple of weeks ago I released a Slovenian Food video showing some of the food I would eat in a day in Slovenia. I had an overwhelming amount of comments suggesting that I try traditional Slovenian food so that it was I did. I visited several restaurants and pastry shops across Ljubljana, Slovenia, and I found a few of the traditional Slovenian food dishes including: Štruklji, Potica, Premurska Gibanica, and Jota.
Since, I have been in Slovenia I have absolutely loved the food. The traditional food of Slovenia was no different. Of all the items that I tried, the Jota on the cold day was easily my favorite. It was quite filling, and the taste was wonderful. There was sausage and sauerkraut. It was absolutely wonderful. As far as the other dishes go, it still blows me away how a dessert here can be so unsweet. As an American expat, my expectations for dessert still haven't changed, and due to this every time I try a new dessert here I feel a bit underwhelmed. I simply think it is due to the fact that Slovenian dishes do not include an abundance of sugar like the American desserts. I think once I travel to America again I'll have a culinary shock.
Overall Slovenian food is delicious. I would consider myself more of a meat and potatoes kind of guy, and I think that is what Slovenian food is all about. I absolutely adore vegetables, and the Slovenian's are no different. Every dish is served with a beautiful display of vegetables. Often root vegetables like potatoes, but as I said above I believe I will like most traditional Slovenian food as it generally fits into the type of food I like to eat.
Of the desserts, I the Premurska Gibanica was definitely my favorite. I think it was a combination of the fact that is was served hot and almost melted my mouth. It reminded of childhood when I would rush to eat the baked good that just came out of the oven. As an American Expat living in Europe specifically Slovenia, I have been very comfortable with the food thus far. Often times, you hear Americans complaining about the food in Europe, but to me this honestly makes no sense. I genuinely enjoy the tender loving care that goes into all foods here. Again, it reminds me of childhood and all of the family gatherings we had to celebrate the holidays.
As I was roaming the city for this video, I noticed that the Christmas trees in Ljubljana are popping up everywhere. The Christmas season in Slovenia is almost upon us, and I could not be more excited. Christmas has to be my favorite time of year. Everyone is joyous, the songs are merry, and the food. Oh the food is wonderful. Also, the mass in the church and the celebration of the birth of Jesus is such a beautiful time.
In conclusion, I truly enjoyed the traditional Slovenian food that I tried. It was all delicious, and someday I will go to the Slovenian villages to get an even more traditional experience.

I too am an American ex-pat living in Ljubljana (it's been over a decade now; I'm half-Slovenian through my dad). I'm enjoying your videos; brings me right back to what it was like when I first moved here (yes, way less sugar in sweets, haha). And glad you appreciate Stolnica/the cathedral; it's one of the most beautiful places in the city. Anyway, enjoy; I may be biased, but you chose one of the best places to move to! 😊

hi. 🙂 I love your videos. As a Slovenian it’s really interesting to see everything from another point of view. I have to admit though, the meat stuklji confused me a lot. I have never heard of them 😂😂 i even asked my mum and she said that thats Slovienia’s way of competing with burek 😂😂 glad to have learnt something new today Also, here are some info about “cheese” or “cottage cheese” struklji. Keep in mind that many things, especially food differs from region to region. What i’m writing is is true for Gorenjska region, i dont know about others. There are usually 2 types of cheese struklji: a sweet and salty option. The salty option is used as a side dish and is usually served with meat (usually beef). In some families (usually the ones that were poor at some point) you would eat the salty ones with sugar on top or you’d make a sauce with crumbs and sugar and pour that on. That was like a desert. And also be careful with ordering this type of struklji if you dont like raisins. Many restaurant (and stores if you buy the frozen ones) put raisins in them.

Welcome to Slovenia and Ljubljana. One thing to look forward to in December is, every church puts up a Nativity Scene. Frančiškani (the pink church on Prešernov trg) are famous for their kids friendly Nativity Scene, the one in Stolnica (St. Nicholas Cathedral) is more sombre and artistic, but every other church puts their own display on. Then there's famous live Nativity Scene in Postojnska jama, and many more all around Slovenia. The one in Brezje, which is a pilgrimage place to Mother of God, is pretty neat, too. So you can be pretty busy in December if you decide to see some of them. Enjoy your stay, hope school is good to you. 🙂

I'd recommend one day going to Gostilna Orle (restaurant Orle). It's on a hilltop near Rudnik, which is roughly 10-15 minute bus ride (bus nr. 3) from the city center. You can either take a car to the top or hike. They have many traditional slovene foods and the absolutely best babyback ribs you will ever have. Plus other kinds of meat dishes or even (in my opinion) best pizza in the city. If you reply, I'd be happy to drive us up to the restaurant orle or guide us up the hike. The restaurant also has a tower at the peak of the hill, so you get a wonderful 360 degree view of all of the surroundings.

Hi.. I'm in Phoenix, Arizona, planning to travel to slovenia. I'm a nature lover. When in the best time to travel? Off season, bearable weather, high 50s or 60s, is fine and less touristy. Please recommend and always mention the month in your videos.

Hi, I have spent some time in Arizona. Wonderful place! SLOVENIA HAS THE BEST NATURE. You'll see a better glimpse of this in my new video that aired today! So far, I think the best time of year for me was early November. The weather was wonderful. Not too cold, not too hot. It was around 50-60 degrees. October was nice too, but it rained a lot. This time of year here is absolutely wonderful as well. This Friday there was a large celebration in the Square as they lit the Christmas lights across the entire city. I believe they do this the last week of November/Beginning December. The city is a lot busier now, but for good reason. The city is lined with the amazing items of Christmas markets: Mulled wine, hot food, local desserts and more. This video was shot the 2nd week of November! I'll add the time frame moving forward. Cheers for tuning in. This video this week is also regarding a very nice place to visit. Cheers!
