The Most DELUSIONAL Catfish | Katy Perry & Spencer

This is hands down one of the most insane Catfish episodes of all time. Prior to watching this episode again for this video, I have only seen it once, and it frustrated me so much, I told myself I'd never watch it again. But, it was highly requested, and I love y'all, so of course I had to cover it! Seeing the way that Nev and Max handled this delusional person much better than Rahne Jones and Travis Mills did with the man in love with his doll. They were brutally honest and very intentional about now allowing the man to remain in his delusion, they recognized it was not healthy, and did what was best, rather than trying to protect their feelings. Now, I have highly controversial opinions, so of course I'm excited to hear your thoughts, feelings and opinions down below in the comments. Yeah, I also took his “she’s hot!” As more of a “she’s hot???” Like, “we’ve done so many episodes and normally it’s unattractive people using the photos of hot people but this person is pretending to be Katy when they are objectively (to the current general societal standards), an attractive person, and I am confused as to why they would be lying about who they are in the first place” with an added “moreover, this attractive person is lying about their appearance to our boy who is, admittedly, not particularly attractive as compared to the current societal standards. This adds to my confusion”, but, you know, condensed into a couple words. I think every time he says that to Spencer it’s part of trying to snap him back into reality a bit, like “hey, there is no Katy Perry here. There is however, an actually attractive woman who is here, talking to you, for the last six years, maybe let’s focus on that” (though I haven’t watched this episode in a long ass time so might be misremembering somewhat)

I feel her life is even more cruel because of how stupid and gullible he is. If she was a decent and not a nasty, cruel person she would have stopped immidiatly when she realised the other person must be very gullible or have intellectual disability. I can see lonely, bored teens pulling pranks like this but that she held it up for 6 years was pretty disturbing. I hope that this was a wake-up call and that she wont hurt more vulnerable people.

Maybe it's a form of schizophrenia with 'delusions of grandeur' rather than 'paranoid delusions'. Now I'm not a mental health professional, but I have had multiple internships at schizophrenia units in hospitals, and Spencer reminds me of some of the patients I met...

I think Nev's "She's so hot" serves a purpose and isn't quite as shallow as you think. Typically, those who catfish do not fit within society's beauty standards, and that's why they use conventionally more attractive people for their pics. The fact that Harriet does fit within society's standards of beauty caught them off guard, because it's so out of the norm for this type of thing. The usual prerogative for catfishing thus wasn't there, and that's what made this episode so intriguing. If your appearance isn't the reason for your catfishing, what is? Ya know?

Honestly, Spencer should be used in training sessions for a lot of mental health professionals on how high functioning but delusional /obsessive disorders can look. Down to the coded messaging. Stalking & obsession is a huge problem in a number of disorders.and if it was as easy as saying "snap out of it," they would. Typically, what "cures" an ongoing obsession without good intervention - often a combo of ongoing therapy and meds - is just transferring that obsession. With all the pent-up rage and anger of the last unresolved one coming along for the ride. Even if it never gets violent(many do), it destroys the person like Spencer going through life as they move from one delusion another. Keeps them from forming real bonds in life.

Yeah I think his obsessive tendencies will just be transferred to someone else. It's pretty scary when someone thinks they are being sent secret messages in songs and whatnot. Without therapy and probably meds anyway, I think he will just move onto another person to obsess over, and possibly stalk. Hopefully it is another person who is separated from him by an ocean. I think that is most likely safer.

@nikkic7097 hopefully. I think this level of mental health often goes over looked and untreated because the person can usually still go to work and pay taxes. If family, friends, and coworkers are concerned, it can be hard to make the person see it as a real problem or symptom, especially men, unless it escalates to violence. And then court ordered therapy is not always going to treat the root cause as much as just turn it into a martyrs task in their obsession. Rather than a wake up call.

Going off how Harriet looks....Shes like 19? 20? And if they have been doing this for 6 years....She was probably 13-14 when this started. And this is where I disagree that its Psychotic behavior. They’re treating Spencer’s delusions as him being stupid or stubborn and not a genuine mental health problem that needs professional help. He sounds like he has erotomania or the beginning of it - a lot of them claim to have gotten “messages” through the famous persons music or TV appearances or radio clips assuring them of their love the way he said he was. His refusal to believe it even when faced with the actual person he was talking to is another symptom. People who believe the way Spencer does can end up stalking the famous person and potentially escalating if they don’t get help.
