Too many times, the RV life gives off these vibes that certain places are "untouchable" or darn near impossible to reserve. We were skeptical about RV living in Florida, to say the least, because of this. However, we don't always take into account that people make so many reservations, but then cancel.
Today we want to make it easy for you and give you the tools that give you front row access to these RV sites. You MUST be quick, but we are showing you how to even the playing field. We just landed Bahia Honda State Park in the Florida Keys for almost 2 weeks!! We have some answers for your RV life.
A large influence on this series has come from content creators like Keep Your Daydream, Red White & Bethune and Changing Lanes. The style of this video is also similar to You, Me & the RV or Less Junk, More Journey in parts.

Love the idea about adding ice to your fridge. We added 2 15 inch fans at the top of our fridge exhaust panel as the heat rises and it gives it help venting the hot air. Also before we put the fans on we got some window screen and I used silicone to attach it to the inside of the vents this keeps the wasps out and no nests get built in there. BTW wasps are attracted by the smell of the propane, so we have some screens over our heater exhaust and hot water compartment. You can also take a dog flee collar and cut it up and place it at the bottom of the compartment to help keep bugs out.

Watching your "oldies" and loving them. I didn't see this in the comments below so I thought I'd like to share this tip: We keep a few frozen water bottles in our freezer to add to the refrigerator on travel days. Even though the frig. is running on propane as we head down the highway, the frozen bottles decrease the refrigerator's workload. A few frozen bottles added when new groceries go in the refrigerator could be helpful too. I also use those frozen bottles in our cooler on day trips. We need less purchased bags of ice and we can drink the water when it melts in the bottles.

Pro Tip! Turn your fridge on mid-day because the first defrost cycle is @60 hours, then 48 hours after that. You want the defrost running in the cool night hours. The fans help not just cool the "lower area" but the absorption fridge needs to act like a chimney and move the air out the top vent to assist with the heat transfer.

Bahia Honda state park is at a most beautiful spot on the overseas highway. Years ago when I was 4 years to 10 years old my mom and dad knew the old couple who used to own a small fishing resort that was located there before the state park was even thought of being built there. What fun my brother and I had running up and down the beach barefoot, looking at the bridge. ( there was only one bridge spanning that waterway back in those days ) and having dinners with that old couple. Spending the nights in those very small cabins. It was great. Thank you kids so much for doing this video. I,m 74 years old now and it seems so not that long ago that we did all that. Thank you both again.

Why wouldn’t you just keep a couple of water bottles in the freezer and then move them to the refrigerator when you want to help cool it down? Then you wouldn’t have a bag of melted ice in your refrigerator. I sometimes freeze a bottle or two of water for my cooler. It works pretty good there too.

I wonder if you could replace the center wooden panel for the door above the fridge @17:28 with a decorative wire mesh or add a couple of 2" to 3" circluar holes in the wooden door panel to be covered by a decorative wire mesh to allow heat to decipate without having to keep the door open all of the time? @@HappilyEverHanks Quick suggestion on the Ice ... we keep a cooler in the truck, will put the colds in with ice... then at the camper I will pour the ice into separate zip lock gallon bags. Then we can put them in different areas of the freezer and fridge. When the ice melts in the fridge ... lay it flat in the freezer to re-freeze ... you then have a block of ice to use again if needed on the next store run, OR you can smack it good to break it up for drinks!

Another comment on RV refrigerators...if it's an absorbtion type (no compressor), it's best to leave it on (if possible) 24/7/365! It will last much longer if it's allowed to run continuously! I know not everyone has the luxury of keeping theirs plugged in at home all year (anyone living in an HOA, ya did it to yourselves LOL), but if it's at all possible, either at home or if there's a power source at the storage facility, I'd keep it running! Here's why: RV 'absorbtion' fridges use a liquid solution of ammonia, water, hydrogen and sodium chromate that is heated (by 12V, 110V or LP) to circulate through the system. A brief description how it works. The 'boiler' heats up the solution and circulates it through the tubes or 'coils.' The solution 'absorbs' heat (the warmer air from within the fridge) and reduces the temperature. Each 'ingredient' has an important purpose: Ammonia: vaporizes at -28°F, absorbing heat. Ammonia is very toxic and corrosive to steel (and...the pipes/tubes are made of steel). Hydrogen: used as a thermal carrier, carrying the heat from the source (inside the fridge). Water: carries the hydrogen on the one end, then after the hydrogen has 'boiled off' into a gas and absorbs the heat, it is 'caught' by the water on the other end of the cycle. Sodium chromate: is a rust inhibitor, preventing the ammonia from corroding the steel tubing/coils. It's critical to keep the solution constantly circulating through the system to prevent the steel tubes from rusting and thus failing and to prevent the solution from crystallizing. Turning the RV fridge off for weeks or worse, months at a time is actually HARMFUL to the system as the rust inhibitor (the sodium chromate) is not circulating through the coils and tubes. I just bought a new camper, and I gave my old one to my son, it is a 2004 28' 5th wheel and the fridge is completely 100% original and still works as new, at 17 years old, and all my previous RV's have never had an issue with the fridge. People think they should turn them off and block them open when not in use, but they should NOT unless they don't have a choice. Leaving it on EXTENDS the life and performance of an RV fridge! And of course a dealer and manufacturer is going to tell you to shut it off...they want the money to fix it after it fails at three or four years old, some even sooner. Never turn off your RV fridge.

I am sure it would be a decent amount of money and I am not sure how extensive of a process it would be…but have you ever considered upgrading to a 12V refrigerator? Ours came with one and there are some major benefits to it. No propane on while traveling, you can literally turn your tanks off. They are very efficient and cool down substantially faster because they use a compressor system like a residential refrigerator and not the evaporation system. So ours does not have the two outside vents. Therefore you also never have any potential cooling issues due to lack of efficiency. When connected to shore power it is just powered off the converter. Also, to my understanding it is just a much more rugged system overall, and you don’t have to be perfectly level to use it.
@HappilyEverHanks
@HappilyEverHanks 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, we have thought about a 12V or residential fridge since we don't even do a lot of boondocking. We were wondering how difficult it would be to have it replaced. Thanks for the information, really appreciate it! ~Renee & Kyle
@dwellbig
@dwellbig 3 жыл бұрын
@@HappilyEverHanks We don’t do any boondocking either. Imo the biggest benefit the 12v has over a residential is just the ability to travel with it on. Otherwise all the benefits are basically the same. I am not sure how people use a real residential refrigerator and keep food while traveling, especially far.
@HappilyEverHanks
@HappilyEverHanks 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah we aren’t sure about that one either 🧐 it makes me wonder... I guess people just really try their best not to access the residential fridge when they are en route to their next destination. Wonder how long those puppies can hold the cold air in for?
@dwellbig
@dwellbig 3 жыл бұрын
@@HappilyEverHanks About 4 hours it seems safely per the internet consensus. Obviously that would be without opening it. And that’s also in a 70 degree house most likely. I used to do that with our old TT that had the classic 120/propane. I would plug it in at the house and let it cool down the night before…then load the food (that was already cold) then travel to the destination with it off and the propane tanks turned off. (I just wasn’t personally sure about or comfortable traveling with the propane on). I never exceeded 4 hours and we never seemed to have a problem. Honesty though the actual retrofitting itself wouldn’t be too bad no matter which route you went. The real fun part or potential challenge is figuring out just how to physically remove the current one from the RV and get the new one in. Those things are built from the inside out. Not everything will therefore go through the door. But I think both the current and new fridge most likely will fit.

Here’s something. Get one of those smart backup alarms and also when you’re doing slow maneuvering like that in a parking lot esp. utilize your 4ways

Ice pack/gel instead of bag of ice really helps get that fridge cool quick. With no leaks. It also really helps if turning on fridge from off!

#HappilyEverHanks, Just a quick note to let you know I've been enjoying your videos. Your sense of humor with sage advice is entertaining and educational. I used to have a Siamese cat "Tao" who loved to camp and even went in the water. Siamese cats seem like a hybrid between cats & dogs, the best of both, but they can be very loud! Happy trails...#Hanks
