Today we try some (not so) Jolly Korean SAT questions... and wow we are not cut out for this.

as someone who's spoken english for all of my life, these questions are awful! if school is teaching english as a second language (which i assume they are) these questions will do nothing to improve the student's comprehension of english. these questions are basically pieces of an essay where every word has been replaced with a much more difficult to understand synonym, to the point that some of these questions don't even make sense! a true test or exam should see how well a student comprehends the subject matter at hand, not whether or not they've memorised a dictionary cover to cover.

the basic mess actually, they do make sense, and most of them are perfectly understandable, but it’s completely stupid to put it in an exam, when pretty much no one actually uses this type of language. The only reason I’m/ we are able to understand them is because we’ve spoken English for our entire lives. It’s just stupid, though, to put this in a test, when you literally won’t use this type of language in your life!

Actually, English doesn't really count as a 'second' language. We also have to take second language class (like Chinese, Japanese, French etc.) which is technically a ' third' language for us lol

7:26 If someone’s wondering how that probability come about, here’s an explanation (I’m revising for my maths exam lol): You can throw the dice three times, and only one of the throw among the three “trials” is a 4. That means the probability of the other two throws is 5/6, and getting 4 is 1/6. So if you want to get one 4, and the other two “not 4”, it’ll be 1/6 *5/6 * 5/6 which is 25/216 The 4 could appear in the first, second or third throw, so multiply that by 3 Which is 25/216*3 = 25/72 which is Ollie’s answer :) Cheers to all high school students out there!

If you know the process all you have to do is the top part which is 25 from 1x5x5 then their solved; you don't have time to solve it the other way you have like less than 60 secs before moving on to the next one.

gosh these texts are so unnecessarily abstruse. the english is great, of course, but the language is convoluted and the content is so obscure it's even harder to understand than scholarly texts!

I completely agree. These questions seem completely useless. It's like they are purposely trying to make them fail instead of evaluating the student's skill. Shouldn't a test measure how well you comprehend a subject?

Those problems are examples of BAD English. You're supposed to make your writing clear and concise. If someone tried to submit this kind of writing to a scholarly journal, they would be rejected and asked to revise their writing for clarity and brevity. Also there was a comma error in one of them. :P

English is my native tongue but out of all the English questions I only got 1 right. I feel so sympathetic towards Koreans having to take those SATs, I don’t even think our questions are that complicated in comparison to the ones they ask y’all. Good luck though!

@@user-gh9cz3kl4b the think is, english is not my first language and i can pretty much do this english question, even though my english spelling is pretty bad. i am pretty confindent i can do better in maths, physcis and chemstry and most korean students. but i kind of have to, considering i have a phd in physics from one of the top european universties. the think is, that i know ivy league students that had a pretty hard time in my universtiy. considering that everythink is taught in english, that should show you somethink. they kind of have a different mindset for studying in the usa and uk. where i am come from, you are left alone with pretty hard problemes for quite a while. you either solve it or fail. school is short (6hours a day), but you got a lot of homework. this teaches you self discipline. somethink most peopel out of america and uk lag.

I love that I know who Walt Whitman is, I know about his most famous work 'Leaves of Grass", I know a lot about the Jacksonian Era, and I am a native English speaker, and I still got the first question wrong. I feel like that says something...

It's a horrible question. There was literally one mention of the answer in that paragraph and even then it was ambiguous as it seemed to build off the previous sentence.

@@stopdog10 I disagree this one was pretty unambiguous the *whole freaking passage* was about how Whitman wanted fame that is somehow different from normal literary fame from immortalization. That narrows it down to 2 or 5. From there you can see that he didn't want to appeal to political celebrities he wanted to be a celebrity himself which leaves 5.

Nope it says nothing at all. It is a common maxim on the reading section of the US SAT (and it applies here as well) that your prior knowledge of the subject matter is irrelevant and that, "The answer is in the passage"

@@muhilan8540 The accepted answer directly contradicts the passage, though. The passage specifies that Whitman sought (and expected) the world to value his poems for centuries, which goes against the answer specifying that he seeks the approval of his contemporaries. There is in fact nothing at all in the passage about his contemporaries - it says he defined poetic fame in relation to the crowd (= the readership), a definition that came from the political rallies of his time, but it does not say anything about the readership being contemporary with him. Basically, _none_ of the options match the passage, making the question itself incorrect.

Whereas I've never read any of Whitman's poems nor have I studied the era in which he lived and I still got it right. The preceding sentences indicate that Whitman wanted to be respected for his work in his own time, and contrast him with other poets who had other ambitions.

I'm glad I am not the only one who gets my feelings of self-worth wrapped up in my grades and sometimes feel like a failure if I don't do well. Some of my fellow students are so flippant about their grades and such, it makes me feel like I'm the only one who struggles with caring SO much about my grades and sometimes feel I am worthless if I don't make really good ones. Harry The Lynx actually i interpret her comment totally different like you see it. I think she just simply wanted to say that the exams are hard. And not that koreans are „overly zealous“ or whatever. I also didnt say that koreans students are fanatical with one word. Since they live in korea and want to receive a good result (like every normal student in other countries too), of course they will study hard. There is nothing „fanatical“ about this students! The only thing which you might considered as fanatical is the conception of the exam, which i guess only a few professors created in the first place. So the only one „fanatical“ might be them or whoever created the exam questions

I don’t necessarily know what bothers me about the English questions. I think it might be the fact that these questions are insanely abstract. They use an English you rarely see outside of essay writing and tests logic instead of proficiency. Furthermore, many of the answers could fit the blank if argued properly using different clues within the context of the text. The paragraph could be interpreted differently thus making every answer right though there is one answer that is slightly better then others.

@Marlyse Turner It's to test comprehension and text analysis. For example, why would schools teach shakespeare if no one talks like that in the 21st century? It's simply to train students to understand complex passages like in the video, not something from a casual conversation that you hear or read in a daily basis.

You studied Shakespeare in school, and they have their own Korean ancient literature to study too. Besides complexity doesn't guarantee a good piece of literature. Why would you compare those SAT articles to the ones written by Shakespeare?

@@meloveu83 You're right, though with enough practice of complexity, it would sure gaurantee a good piece of literature. I'm comparing SAT and Shakespeare since they're known to be both complicated and I'm not saying they're the same. Also I doubt that thousands of students that are succeeding on the English exams in Korea (which are known to be very conplicated) can barely speak English. You'd have to provide actual data and statistics with those kinds of debatable statements.

10년전보다 영어 난이도 상당히 높아졌네요. 그땐 토익 800,1등급 정도였고, 지금은 975 나오는데도 풀기가 쉽지 않네요. 신부님의 말씀은 수능과 무관한 지금의 저에게도 많은 힘이 됩니다. identity is a gift. its not earned. 자신을 증명하기 위해 하루하루를 힘들게 살아가는 대한민국의 청춘들이 모두 위로받길.

Nearly all of korean high schools ' English problems are over 30 paragraphs chosen from 2 ~ 3 prep tests for Korean SAT. This means that the students have to recite all the texts English teachers indicated as they don't learn English grammar from the school enough.

english is my second language and honestly i think it's a great language, it can be complex or confusing but essentially i feel it's an easy (to access) language... i like the flow of it... even when writing i feel more comfortable with english than my native language but the way it's taught in korea (by my deductions from things i've seen and heard) i think it's the wrong way.... those questions are appealing to your ability of deduction and logic rather than actual learning how to speak or write in that language and honestly.. what's the point in that? rather than testing the students on overly complex sentence structures that NOBODY uses shouldn't they learn how to converse eloquently? maybe about literature or just i don't know.... aspects of the language that are actually practical and don't only exist in "korean highschool english exam preperation" textbooks??? i guess i'm just salty cause at my highschool english was taught in such a great way, and it was easy to fall in love with the language and the subject but how can korean students enjoy english if it's taught in that horrendous, unnecessary way?

THIS should be the outcome of English as an international language that is sought in highschool; the ability to communicate well. You write beautifully clear and get your points across. Those 2 first questions were correct but weren't written in good English, I should think. If I were to write a scientific paper in such 'sophisticated' way, I would definitely got revised. Clear and concise, complex if appropriate, English is what you want.

The questions shown relied on the student's deductive and logical reasoning to decipher a simultaneously acute and obtuse answer from an equally acute and obtuse paragraph. As you said, NOBODY speaks like that in regular conversation. I'd be hard pressed to find even a philosopher or an educator speak like that to even a fellow philosopher. If someone spoke like that to me I'd assume he's off his damn meds!

It doesn't look hard at all, and you find that kind of question a lot in English Ianguage proficiency tests. I think that's the best question of all three, in the sense that it is appropriate to test one's English ability.

I got it right, second guessed myself, thrice guessed myself, quad-I-don’t-know-the-correct-term-for-doing-something-a-fourth-time-that-fits-with-second-and-thrice’d myself, and ended up getting it right. I got lucky tho cuz I mixed up the numbers near the end and the actual question. The problem is, that they don‘t have a lot of time. And even if 60 seconds or 30 seconds or whatever would be enough for that question they would probably have to do it in less than that, so that they have more time for the other questions.

I am taking korean SAT this year, and I've been in American school for few years, and I have to admit; I failed loads of tests before I realized that you shouldnt study "english"for these korean "english" tests,but you have to practice techniques to solve problems fast.. And lot of these passages in the test doesnt make sense.. It seems like test makers just try to make it hard and complicated they just twist those simple sentences million times.... And they just simply dont make sense most of the times.. even when they are translated in korean Korea..I really think its time to change their way of teaching english,because its not getting anywhere... its like teaching students some unexisting language...and most of my friends devote so much time to studying english but none of them are actually capable of communicating in english...

Mockavel Velli I'm from Spain and mostly if you want to get a job in pretty much anywhere you have to speak English, so considering how competitive it is Korea at the time of getting a job in a good place, English is a must. Also I've been studying English apart from the two official languages of my region and I've seen no harm to the native language whatsoever. You don't actually learn English at school in Spain but the people I know who learnt it by other means don't have a problem either.

Linguists have estimated out of the 6000 languages in the world today; more than half will be gone by the end of this century and English contributes to that. Korean student here, THIS is exactly what discourages me from studying.. even tho im trying, i have no idea if I'll gEt iNto cOllEgE (getting a college degree is literally all that matters here) and have a stable job and a stable income and all that shit cuz i really am trying as a student, but i get so discouraged bc so many students here start studying their asses off so early on like in kindergarten, if u dont know algebra by 3rd grade, trigonometry by 5th grade and calculus by 8th grade ur considered a loser and some teachers tell u to give up cuz ur too late. My friend (9th grade) has math and physics classes until 2 AM and the building is full of really tired students who just want to go home but cant bc "other students will catch up and beat you". Really feel people who cant stand this stress and make sad choices.... :'(

올해 미국에서 의대 들어가는 학생입니다. 미국 대학원 입학 시험중에서 제일 어렵다는 MCAT (미국 의대 입학 시험) 에서 독해부분은 미국 각종 인문 및 과학 논문에서 구절을 따와서 문제를 내지만 그래도 수능보다는 쉬워요. 신입생 평균 나이 만 24세, 미국에서 탑 1% 수재인 의사들을 뽑는 시험보다도 영어가 외국어인 만 17-18세 한국 고등학생이 보는시험이 더 어렵다는 말입니다. 독해능력? 좋죠, 근데 미국 시험들은 독해 + 단어수준만 시험하는데에 있어서 한국 수능을 그 위로 문제를 엄청 꼬아서 내요. 원래 취지가 영어권 원문 원서 이해능력이라면, 굳이 문제를 꼬아서 낼필요가 있나요? 엄청 복잡한 철학적 논제를 다루는 논문도 일부러 꼬아서 글을 쓰진 않아요. 독자가 필자의 주장을 이해할수있게 예시까지 내면서 친철하게 설명을 하지. 저는 제가 만 17-19세때 쓴 에세이들 쪽팔려서 못읽어요. 제 자신이지만 수준이 너무 낮고 대학교 1-2학년때 에세이만 봐도 세삼 일년일년 얼마나 늘었는지도 실감하고. 다른 서양권 나라들은 고등학생들한테 대학수준을 따라갈수 있는 정도를 요구하고 대학4년간 발전을 기대하죠. 한국은 고등학생들한테 대학수준의 마스터를 벌써 요구하는것 같습니다. (그렇다고 수능만점자가 대학논문 독해잘하는지도 모르겠지만...) 한국에서 자라고 미국 교육과 비교해본 이민자로서 한국 교육이 너무 안타깝네요.

저도 중2 끝내고 미국와서 그런지는 몰라도 MCAT에서 CARS가 점수 제일 낮았는데 친구가 준 수능영어랑 비교해 봤을때 엠켓영어가 더 쉬워보였어요. 물론 수능영어는 눈으로 보기만했고 실제가 풀거나 채점해보니는 않았지만. 참고로 뉴욕주립의대 4군데 중에 한군데 갑니다. 어딘지는 굳이 말하기 싫고. 아무리 폄하할라고 해도 캐리비안의대는 너무갔네요. 디오스쿨도 아니고. 거긴 갈바에는 프리메드에서 진로 바꾸는게 더 나아요 4년 학교 비싼 학비 내고 레지던트 매치안될라면 어쩔라고.

MCAT영어가 수능영어랑 비슷하다는거자체가 말이안됨. 옛날 MCAT영어면 몰라도 애초에 수능영어는 단어만 알면 만점은 아니더라도 1등급이 가능한데 ㅇㅇ 상위권애 수능영어 고정 1등급 찍고가는애들은 기본 토익부터 900이상 토플 110이상 하고가는애들이 많음. 그리고 캐리비안의대말한건 뻥치는애들이 드럽게많음 미국의대다닌다고 애초에 영주권 시민권없는 유학생이 미국의대들어가는경우는 서울대의대들어가는수준이니깐

Nah this isn't as bad as CARS. The "fill in the blank" type questions you just need to know the general idea of the paragraph and read before and after. CARS was def more complex than this. In the Netherlands for our last English exam (SAT) we get have to read several articles and answer questions about the articles. This is a way to test our English reading comprehension. We get the same questions as shown in this video so for me it wasnt that hard. I had them all correct(dont ask me about math)English here at school is highly focused on comprehension. You have to know what you're reading, writing and hearing. We have oral tests, we write essays about certain subject (fully English), you have to read a mandatory amount of books(and it will be tested) and ofcours we get tested on our vocabulary.

in the contarast Netherlands, Korean and English have many differnt cultures. Their languege orders are different. Their language forms are also diffrent. So it is easy for korean to learn Japanese(because of similar language forms, orders) but it is hard for korean to learn English. Likewise if you learn English, it maybe easy to learn this language but if you learn Korean or japanese, it maybe hard for you.

수능에대한개인적인생각 1)학생들이 생각하는 영어공부의 목적과 평가자가 생각하는 영어공부의 목적이 다르다. 학생들은 실용적인 회화를, 평가자들은 단순히 영어라는 도구를 활용하는걸 넘어 추론과 논리적사고, 그리고 전공서적에 나오는 수준의 영단어 암기를 추구한다. 둘중정답은 없다고 생각한다. 2. 그럼 대학을 가야만할까..? 공부외의 길이 있을까..? 나같이 재능이라곤 일도없고, 실패할용기도없고, 재력도 없는 사람이 어떻게 대기업수준의 돈을 벌며 살수있는지는 모르겠다... (일단 십대 대기업을 가려면 명문대는 필수다....) 혹여 그방법을 알더라도 사회에 만연한 학벌주의를 이겨낼 단단한 마음이 필요한것같다... 특히 대학 진학후 학벌주의로부터 오는 당연시되고 다양한 혜택들을 직접 체감하니 느끼는바가 많다... 좋은 대학을 가는것만큼 가성비좋은 자격증이 없는 것같다... 좋은위치에 있는사람도 학벌주의의 팽배함에 소름이돋는다... 대한민국에서 학벌주의는 좀처럼 사라질 기미가 보이지않는다 3. 수능이 인생에서 그렇게 중요한건 아니라구 말하는 사람들이 너무 무책임하게 느껴진다...

전한솔 수험생이신 것 같은데, 고민하시는 바 저도 겪었던 것이고 많이 공감합니다. 수능이 인생에서 그렇게 중요한 건 아니라고 하는 사람들, 네 무책임한 것 맞습니다. 수능이 중요할 수도 있거든요. 저렇게 말하는 사람들은 명문대를 나오지 않아도 자기 재능을 가지고 잘 살 수 있는 자신이 있기 때문에 그렇게 말하는 건데, 모든 사람이 그렇지는 않으니까요. 그리고 어떤 경우에는 자신의 꿈을 이루는 데 명문대가 중요한 발판인 경우도 있습니다. 사실 공부 외의 길은 생각보다 많습니다. 옛날보다 지금이 더 많아진 것 같고, 앞으로도 더 많아질 것 같아요. 그렇지만 그런 길은 리스크가 크죠. 그래서 나름의 비전과 확신이 있어야 하고 많은 노력이 뒷받침 되어야 합니다. 그래서 만약에 본인이 그런 비전이 아직 보이지 않는다면, 눈 딱 감고 안전한 길로 가세요. 수능 공부 열심히 하시고, 명문대를 노려보세요. 그러다가 문득 뭔가 자신이 할 수 있을 것 같은 비전이 생기면, 그 때 가서 방향을 전환하셔도 될 것 같습니다.

수능을 3일 앞둔 수험생으로써...ㅋㅋ 도표추론 문제는 난이도 최하로 시간끌기용이라 정답은 3~5번일 확률이 높습니당ㅋㅋ 빈칸추론 문제는 그냥.. 어렵... 그리고 저 수학문제 보기의 분모를 72로 맞춰주면 분자는 순서대로 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 입니당 ㅋㅋㅋ 조쉬가 찍은 대로 찍으면 망해욧ㅋㅋㅋ (그냥 억울해서 끄적끄적...) 다른 고3들도 힘!!👊👊

아 진짜 조쉬말 확 와닿는다;; 영어가 모국어가 아닌 고등학생들이 세벽까지 이런 영어문제를 공부하고 있다고..;; 아 진짜 씁슬하네요 뭐 우리가 영어가 모국어가 아니고 실질적으로 외국인들과 어울려 살 기회가 적은 사람들이 대부분이고 영어란게 정보습득이나 교환용이니 당연 쓰기 읽기가 더 쓰임세 많고 중요한건 알겠지만 그렇다고 저런 말도안되는 지문들을;; 실제 영어사용국가에서도 쓰는지 안쓰는지도 모를법한 복잡한 문장들을 가지고 시험을 봐야하나 싶음 적어도 쓰기 읽기 위주로 가르치려면 그냥 미국 영국의 학교나 직장, 뉴스 등에서 실제 사용되는 문서나 문장들을 가지고 가르쳐서 나중에 실전에 쉽게 적응하고 써먹을 수 있게라도 하던가;;

The English questions are the kind of questions you answer when you study philosophy (more specifically critical thinking). I remember when I first did a critical thinking test and I was absolutely clueless but the skills you learn from studying this subject are definitely worth it and you become a more detailed and logical thinker. But to be answering those questions in your second language is one of the most mind blowing things - to all of the students who do that, I admire you greatly and I hope you realise the sheer difficulty of the questions you're answering 💜👏👏

Wow! It was very fun trying to understand each English question, as it is my second language (I've had additional classes for English being in the ESL program, throughout my education since arriving to Canada). We'd have reading sessions and have similar questions like these about the text we just read, as part of our exercises. Here are the answers I got from my own understanding of what the question was saying: 1) I chose option number 3 - I chose this answer because it seemed to me that the readers of Whitman's poems, saw it as a place to escape from any tension that was happening in America at the time. But I completely ignored Whitman, the poet's, desire for his work to be valued. In order to attain immortality within the pages, he would need 5.) The approval of his peers (the right answer). 2.) I chose number 5 - Science is just science. It is universal in principle only and does not speak. Mathematics shows the fruits of science, so it is an exact form of communication. But in order for non-scientific folk to understand the science, the scientist must trade the exactness of mathematics for vague and metaphorical explanations. Thus 5.) Violates the intellectual level that makes him a scientist. 3.) I got number 3 as well - just from observation and careful reading. 4.) I chose 2 - nothing but a guess 😂 This was really fun! I felt like I relived my high school English exam day ❤
