I'm a Search Marketing specialist of which a major part is understanding how people use language and the specific context in which they're using certain words when searching for things online as a way to help infer intent. A great example of this is the difference in intent between someone searching for "homes for sale" vs " houses for sale". Although they're semantically very similar, the intent of the searcher is very different in that that former is generally looking for a single family home whereas the latter is generally used by people looking for rental or revenue property. That all being said I wouldn't consider myself a linguist because the work is an extention of my marketing role. I feel like that's very similar to what Tom is talking about even if he won't come out and say it. It's like someone taking a Google Analytics course and calling yourself a data scientist, lol.

I know five languages. I have worked in marketing, telemarketing, customer service, emergeny call centers, all kinds of things having to do with language and rhetoric. I would NEVER say "I work in linguistics." I don't have a degree in linguistics. I have a leyman interest. I know a lot about it, and I think it's fun, but I have no official knowledge or working experience in it so I would never say it. The only possible reason you would (lie) would be to seem more "intellectual" or "special", which is so f-ing cringe if you haven't earned it. His definition of "I work in linguistics" seems to be "I work somewhere where people use language".
