About three years ago when I first learned about the drop shot, I started using it with mixed results. Sometimes it worked but most times it didn't. On one fishing trip I wasn't getting any bites with anything else I tried so, I decided to tie on a drop shot setup. Unfortunately for me I had forgotten to bring any drop shot sinkers or sinkers of any kind. Out of desperation I used a ned-rig as my sinker with the drop shot soft-plastic tied on as usual. I couldn't believe it. I freaking killed it that day. Using that ned-rig as my sinker working the bottom and the drop shot tied on about two feet above it, it seemed to have doubled my chances of catching bass. More than twice on that day I got hit and as I was reeling the fish in another bass would hit the other bait I'd tied on the same line. Sorry to say that I was only able to bring in one out of the two bass that had hit my line. It appeared that those second fish had not been hooked well enough. They would manage to shake loose during the retrieval. Since that time, I've also tried this method using an ultralight jig as my drop shot sinker. This also worked to improve my chances of getting hit but, not quite as well as the ned-rig setup with the drop shot soft-plastic tied on just above it.

Using every part of every cast to make the lure presentation realistic as it comes into the strike zone makes perfect sense. Keep this stuff coming wherever ya find and we don't have to go anywhere but here when you use the submarine camera to show the truth. And props for giving the credits to KVD.

I had not seen/heard of this tip from him personally, thanks for the underwater footage and echoing Kevin's tip! A drop shot is a technique I need to try out myself and I'll keep the tip up in mind. The Line Laboratory had an interesting video on braid to leader knots. Curious on what folks use personally when doing braid to fluoro leader for drop shots.
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors 15 күн бұрын
I will usually to the braid mainline to the swivel and then attach my leader from there, but maybe those that don't use a swivel can share what they like to use.

@@SteveRogersOutdoors ah, I heard you say you used a swivel but never put it together it not two pines together but just two knots.

Alberto knot but an FG has slightly better knot strength. Swivel works too but then you're limited on leader length.
@redtobertshateshandles
@redtobertshateshandles 15 күн бұрын
FG all the way. Strongest, and it gets easier to tie as you practice. In heavier saltwater lines, there is even a greater strength advantage.

For me, a natural, gliding action is a great way to illicit bites on tough days. It lets the bass know that something interesting is there for them to check out. This is a trick I'll be using for sure!

Thanks Steve! Your videos are very informative! It’s pretty cool that KVD has this new channel, as I watched many of his years ago. I’m having a tough time in NE Oklahoma in clear rocky water. If I concentrate, I could probably catch more smallmouth in my main lake closer to Tulsa, but there are several not far away that have more vegetation!

@@SteveRogersOutdoors Yes, Grand Lake has hosted many Tours. Don Butler, an old friend who was like a father figure to me when I was in junior high and high school was from Tulsa and unfortunately passed a few years ago, moved to Grand after selling Okibug. Went to school with his two sons and still have one of his tackle boxes and many of his older lures, spinner baits, Mitchell 300 and jigs from ‘81! He won the 2nd BASS Masters tournament in ‘72 and loaned $10k to Ray Scott in ‘68 or ‘69 to get BASS started, as Ray needed the money for letters and postage to contact any local fishing clubs, stores, marina, etc. throughout the US to advise them of a national fishing league he was trying to create across the US where you could earn an income fishing in these tournaments! (didn’t know if you knew that). It’s a longer drive to Grand, so I usually just go up to Skiatook Lake north of Tulsa 30 miles (very rocky and very clear). Fort Gibson produces nice bass also.

Had to watch this 2 more times. 2nd time was focused on fact you use a swivel. I tried vmc swivel nose hooks and man i lost so many fish i wrote it off as the swivel. Do you lose alot of fish with your swivel? If not do you think it might be because not on a hook? I used same bait same day and once removed vmc swivel drop shot hook, used Aaron Martens G finesse i smashed em.
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors 9 күн бұрын
I place the swivel about a foot to 18 inches up the line. I don’t feel it has made any negative impact on my hook up ratio. That’s interesting that hook was causing issues. I will have to do some more research into that. Thank you for sharing it!
@Woefman911

@@SteveRogersOutdoors Thanks for follow up. I purchased that vmc swivel nose hook because it looked so good, despite i think built for folks that have hard time tieing dropshot. The hook will spin 360, so in your mind without testing you can conceive if not get penetration it will swivel around and not hook the fish .

@SteveRogersOutdoors

Great question. Just a lift, but when that slack is suddenly taken it out, it makes the lure pop just a bit. But I would sure think a pop of the rod would work too.
