I’ve been ignoring my violin for 47 years. However, my son has asked my play at his wedding. So I’ve dusted off 47 years worth of rosin dust, restrung my violin, bought a new bow and have started practicing. Thank you for the handy tips and inspiration to get back in playing shape. It will take some time but the foundation is still there so I think I can do it :).

Finally! A straightforward, not overly complicated video for violin warmups, and WHY they are important! Thank you for the video! EDIT: Thank you thank you THANK YOU! The warmups here and the video on tension in the thumb causing shuddering in the bow (if anyone hasn't seen it, go watch it; it's really helpful) have made it so I can actually FIX some mistakes I have been making! I live in the middle of nowhere southwest USA, so I've been mostly self-taught for a few years, and I am definitely looking into the academy now! Especially since a lot of small mistakes (like thumb tension) aren't something I really notice without them being pointed out. So being able to notice that now is super helpful, I've been able to play a few pieces I've never been able to play before without the bow shuddering. (YAY!) And the scales exercise has helped me tremendously improve my intonation, because it's easier to hear when I'm off a note in a piece if I practice the scale beforehand. SOOO helpful! Thank you again!

Placing a sticker in the middle of the bow is a great idea for playing slurs. I realized that I was playing unevenly so this will help. Also I was noticing your bow hold. It's very relaxed. It looks as though the bow is almost hangs from your hand. I've seen another violinist that plays that way. The bow hold has been a real challenge for me. A few days ago I woke up to my pinky throbbing then it did most of the day so I didn't use it. It's ok today and I have practiced today. The bow hold, string crossing, and intonation are areas I am working on. There is so much to be aware of as a beginner and it seems one has to make an effort to be aware of what one is doing constantly in all areas . I know it will get better and really it already has. Your encouragement is a help for sure. Love your sense of humor! The one about not playing the same thing all the time once you've mastered it was so funny. Day one, day two, one year later. Haven't belly laughed like that in a while.
@MollyMalone19835 жыл бұрын
I actually practice all the scales I know at the moment before each practice session (10 months in, so D, G, C, A, E, B and F major, 1 octave), and my teacher gave me an exercise sheet for slurred notes which started at 4 notes per bow, now I'm up to 16 which is difficult, but still pretty cool :D I know I should include more bowing exercises and string crossing exercises...

Julia, you're a great teacher. when you add some humor to lighten up the practice it makes everything much more enjoyable. I'm pretty much a beginner and a lot of my practice time is scales, finger exercises, et cetera. By the way, whenever you say 'scales' I thought you were saying 'skills.' I admire you Dutchies for your command of english. (I'm in the U.S.) 'Scale' rhymes with 'mail.' What's funny is it's practically the same thing - playing scales is developing or sharpening skills. thank you for your incisive, informative and entertaining videos. Yes Yes Yes...This is the kind of lessons I like best, the Play Along...Please make more play along videos, please! Us beginners (at least me) really benefit from playing along with someone else (you hehe)...maybe make a video of you doing the warm up and some scales and stuff repetitively, like a few minutes of bow practice (my nemesis right now hehe), and a few minutes of each scale, etc...you could just do it once and in edit loop it several times, or something :D Playing along with you also helps a lot with us beginners intonation :D Anyway, please more play along for beginners, this type of video seems very rare for violin, whereas for guitar it seems there are a lot more playing lessons (seems like most violin people are stingy with the lessons hehe)...gah, i digressed again....anyway, thanks for all your wonderful lessons and advice :D
