@@bellicose4653 Yep, an explanatory voice over at the start to explain context is fine. If you need to do it all through the film, you've got a problem. A trilogy would have helped sort that out - more room and time for development and exposition.

He looks young but powerful and confident kind of inbetween a boy and a man like a young wolf. He looks equally dangerous and charismatic. The new guy looks like he does gay sissy porn on the side and in general I think the obvious diversity casting of the new Dune is insulting to the spirit of the series. I have great disdain for this era and its social politics that should stay far away from media. Next thing you know when Disney reboots starwars they are going to get a transexual to play Luke and and a black midget cripple in a wheelchair playing Obi-Wan.

@@rbrearey yes because around the time Paul commenced his final attack... He told one of his Fremen, I believe it was Otheym of sietch Gara Kulon... To take a supply of the changed water of Life... And wait with it near a very large and volatile pre spice Mass. Had Otheym received a certain order from Paul... He and his men would have dumped the water of Life into the pre spice mass. From now on on it would have been the water of death. It would have caused a chain reaction that would have destroyed all melange on arrakis spreading death among the makers killing an entire cycle of life. Arrakis would have become a true desolation. Without makers or spice. Without the spice The navigators would have become blind. The Bene Gesserit would have lost all their powers. All commerce among the great houses would cease. The empire would have been lost on isolated scattered planets. Civilization itself would end. If Paul muad'dib was not obeyed spice would not flow!

The movie is a real mixed back. Some scenes are almost exactly how I imagined them in the books, and the dialogue is almost exactly carried over. The pain box scene stands out especially in that regard. Other's, like the "sound guns" or Paul making it rain suddenly on Arrakis were random as hell. I still think Kyle is leagues beyond Timothee in terms of his portrayal of Paul.

What people forget, or just don't know, is that the Bene Gesserit as an organization is thousands of years old and have their fingers in everything. They are essentially the Catholic Church if the Church was in every nation and every capitol in the world. Helen Mohaim is the head of the Bene Gesserit and thus akin to the Pope. She's one of the most powerful people in the Empire. Paul telling her to be silent and instantly subduing her is unprecedented in history and a major slap down of the BG.

For some weird reason I really like that this movie kept the inner dialogues. I consider that kinda cool. And some designs are pretty amazing, too. The sandworms were the most beautiful that I've ever seen. Unintentionally funny is still funny. If I want really great Dune, I can always read the book.

The beauty of actually using the medium. Creators cannot completely deliver the experience the original material can provide to the reader in an adaption. But, they can certainly make their own. Lynch’s Dune is so deeply flawed, yet undoubtedly a cinematic experience.

By itself, the movie is actually pretty good. But because it's based on the novel, there's certain expectations that it didn't meet. And they changed a lot of the story elements, or briefly brushed over them via a narrator. I saw the movie quite a few times before I ever read the books. I was able to enjoy the movie for what it was. But I get it... I read the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice after seeing Interview with the Vampire. Then, they decided to come out with a movie adaptation of Queen of the Damned. I couldn't enjoy the movie. It was pure crap. They changed so much of the story that I couldn't enjoy it. I couldn't get past how bad they butchered one of my favorite books.

I may be totally wrong about this, but I think that audiences were put off by hearing the characters' thoughts all the time. I love the movie, but that is a really weird choice that Lynch made. I honestly can't think of one other movie that I've seen that in.

@@SuperTonyony Actually Tony, that is one of the few things even detractors of the movie agree were needed: there is a lot of thoughts in the book that just can't be conveyed in facial experessions, and was really needed to get some points across to people new to the story. The only 'thought' I felt wasn't needed was 'I will bend as a reed in the wind!' which was a/ not from the book and b/ obvious as fuck what he did once he did it.

It's also one of the few places it straight up improves on the book. Except for the rain of course. Take that away, just have Alia screeching that Paul is the Kwisatz Haderach, and it's gold. Certainly much better than the book's actual last line: "Think on it, Chani: the princess will have the name, yet she'll live as less than a concubine - never to know a moment of tenderness from the man to whom she's bound. While we, Chani, we who carry the name of concubine - history will call us wives.”

Find the Spicediver 3-hr fan edit of this film (DUNE 1984). He manages to gives us a true glimpse of the masterpiece that this movie could have been. Forget all the other so-called “official” versions of this movie. The Spicediver version is the absolute definitive version of this film. He fixes so many issues with the editing of the film that it almost makes David Lynch himself to want to come back and re-embrace his estranged child (this film) and give it the proper director’s cut it deserves-along the very lines that Spicediver has laid out for Lynch. I mean with such a cast, it’s impossible to think that this movie ever was a flop. Spicediver will show you why it should have been a true cinematic classic!

Aslan says, "Don't recite the Deep Magic to me Witch, I was there when it was written." Later on, secretly, Aslan makes a deal with her, saying that he will sacrifice himself for Edmund's deeds, and when they make the agreement and return to the crowd, she stands in front of her throne and asks, "How will I know you will keep your promise?-" And Aslan fuckin makes the most violent face you'll ever see him make in the entire movie, roaring viciously at her, and she falls back into her throne with fear, and the crowd laughs at her, cheering as she's carried away by her creatures.

I describe David Lynch's 'Dune' as his greatest movie ... but, sadly, his greatest tragedy ... That was not his doing, per-se ... he was undone by taking on a massive universe contained in the first novel alone , which, as someone above suggested, really ought have been three, 2hr, movies, instead of cramming it into just one ... On top of that, the inevitably meddling of a studio too stupid to understand the masterpiece that Lynch was creating ... if I had it my way, he would have been given a $150 million budget (a massive amount of money for a movie in those days ... even Titanic, by David Cameron, was just shy over $100 million ... ), and simply told to get on with making it ... and have the patience to wait until he had finished it ... There is another version, floating around, which David Lynch used a pseudonym instead of his own, which contains a different opening, and various other scenes not in the orginal. In fact, someone did splice the two together in the scene where the Third Stage Guild Navigator meets the Emperor, but could not overcome the changes in aspect ratios, which makes it a tad jarring to watch ... Hence my dream of winning the American Powerball; buying the rights to both versions; digitally restoring both; then splice them together, using the best aspect ratio ... it will create a very long version, of possible 4-5+ hrs long, but such a heroic faliure needs to be given the full dignity it deserves ...
