As a 38 year old I’m honestly thrilled I got to play in a MMO era that was truly legendary. I just don’t get any true excitement when it comes to new aged MMOs - Now that I’m the father of a 10 month old I have very limited time to play MMOs or even games in general but when I do I always go back to the classics. EverQuest, Asheron’s Call, City of Heroes, Dark Age of Camelot. I haven’t found a new MMO that makes me yearn to play it except maybe M&M.

It's interesting because I've always thought of it as bring niche but a not insignificant number of games recent or in dev are always on pvp or very pvp reliant.
@yahootube902 сағат бұрын
The vast majority are definitely not in favor of 24/7 PVP. Most people don't want to be on guard every second they are playing. The PVP community is definitely passionate about creating more of them though. I guess with it being a niche segment of games made by people that are making the game for themselves, none of them really hit the mark for the general public.

Wait, back up. Did you say Star Citizen is laying people off? The mmo that raised around 700 million dollars is running out of money? How is that possible? This is sending up many red flags if this is the case. I am hoping I misheard you.
@Redbeardflynn6 сағат бұрын
they've laid off over 100 people in 2024 including ending the year by laying off several executives: massivelyop.com/2025/01/07/star-citizen-chief-sustainability-officer-publicly-resigns-from-his-post-at-cig/
@EB-bl6cc5 сағат бұрын
Star Citizen hadn't already raised red flags for you years ago?
@rooster10123 сағат бұрын
Meh Star Citizen doom and gloom we hear it every year and yet they raised another 116 million dollars less than 1% off their record from last year, and as far as layoffs those where mostly people that refused to move to other studios as they shut down the LA studio and then there are the people who refused to work in person which is now required as they are pushing for release. And just to be clear they are still hiring as they have over 50 positions open, I would love to see KZbinrs do a little research before posting videos as it really is not that difficult.
@Redbeardflynn3 сағат бұрын
Dismissing layoffs because they wouldn't return to office is silly. Return to office mandates since 2020 have been used to make clean layoffs that reduce severance. Hire someone on la and then 3 years later say move to Toronto or you're laid off. They also culled several executive positions to end the year and they just had their chief of strategy resign. 50 open positions is less than half of the layoffs as is. Listen, i totally understand wanting to defend a game you're personally invested in emotionally. And I'm fairly charitable to star citizen but layoffs are *never* a good sign. It shows a failure at the company to adequately prepare and it costs real people their jobs and livelihoods. They're always bad.
@imaantagonist63224 сағат бұрын
I realize games take a lot of people and a long time to make but 70 million over 4 years, or 700 million over 12 years, that's way too much and too long. These companies need to change the way the do business and develop or they need to move on and we the consumers should not be waiting or helping with little to nothing to show.
@Redbeardflynn3 сағат бұрын
70 million over 4 years would be an outlier at this point. World.of warcraft adjusted for inflation wasn't even remotely that cheap. Games are profit driven now, like movies. With thst investment had gone up and costs have increased. Call or duty costing 700 million should be a bigger wakeup call than star citizen costing 700 mil to ostensibly make two games tho imo.
@imaantagonist63223 сағат бұрын
@@Redbeardflynn The price isn't so much the issue, it's the price over time. I've got nothing against making a profit. Profit is required. 4 years, 12 years and a game is still in Alpha, sorta, that's way too long knowing many wonderful, great, profitable games that have lasted a long time didn't take anywhere near that long to release.
@Redbeardflynn2 сағат бұрын
@imaantagonist6322 12 years is an outlier. Well...it seems like it is. Throne and liberty took 12 years as well. But 4 years is standard. 3-6 years probably for most big games. Mmos are generally more than that.

PVP doesn't belong in MMO's as you can never balance the PVP and PVE.
@EB-bl6cc5 сағат бұрын
disagree. I think you balance the PvP and then just let the PvE go wild. The beauty of PvE is.. it doesn't really need to be balanced. Especially if you make the roles unique enough that everyone brings something valuable to the table rather than homogenizing, then they will bring x dps even if y is doing more damage, because of the util

I gave Pantheon a try, but it's just terrible. If this is what they have to show for 10 years of development, there's no chance of fixing everything that's broken, improving the things that suck, and finishing all the features needed to make an actual game, let along a living world MMO to immerse yourself in. Save your money. Another Brad McQuaid wet fart of a project. I knew better than to trust anything that dude led.

I have never backed AOC. ( Ashes of creation ). Don't really follow it all that much. However people that have followed that game and pledge to it started saying it looks like a scam. For GOOD reason. Steven Sharif from Intrepid Studios literally had a melt down over that. To me that shows a guilty conscience. I only followed Pantheon myself. At one point after many upsets and an insane amount of time waiting. I started feeling like it was a scam. I do NOT owe anybody an apology for that. These people that have backed AOC feel like MANY of us at one point felt about Pantheon. However nobody from VR came out and had a meltdown over it like Steven Sharif did from Intrepid Studios.

Idk, some of the "ashes is a scam" vids (especially Narc's) have been proven to be extremely disingenuous. I don't know if the game is 100% legit, but it appears to at least be 90%. There's content, they are making additions regularly to the game, a lot of youtubers that I trust that have played the alpha say it's legit. Of course it still could end up being a scam after all that. I won't be playing until it's released (or not) so my stance is simply.. if it turns into a good game, great I'll play it. If it's a scam.. oh well, there's 23983247 other things to do with my time
@yahootube902 сағат бұрын
I mean it's a playable game. I wouldn't call it a scam, per se. As to how far along it will progress, who knows? It's more real and legit than most of these in-dev MMOs. The main complaints I've heard are the FOMO alpha pledge sales or whatever. That does seem a little bit scummy.
