Need to clarify, else “some" other viewers will thought that they are abusing the birds. This kind of bird basically will build the nest purpose is to lay egg, once the egg was hatched and the bird grow up they will leave the nest. The used nest will never ever be reused again by other birds that come. What the farmer harvested was the used nest instead of new build nest. It's like helping each other, farmer is providing the protected / safe shelter to the bird, and then harvested the left over used nest. They keep this eco system works for many years already, that's why every places in Malaysia are actually building the shelter for these birds.

My grandpa is Chinese Indonesian and he tried to build this bird’s nest business but it didn’t work out, they didn’t want to build any nests for him 😂 I found your channel from the round communal houses in China and have been going back and watching your Long Way Back Home Playlist. I really love your content! My partner and I think it shows such a different and unique perspective and we love how you present your travels with respect and curiosity. Thank you for sharing! ❤

Fascinating! This has to be the most exotic food product I've ever heard of (except maybe hummingbird tongues). The effort you exerted to film and describe this phenomenon is astounding. David Attenborough could learn from you.

I recognized the building you started your journey from (the white one near the the river). I took some very good photo's of it. I thought the unique shape and the whiteness of the building made it stand out. I was there in late 2012 and the area was completely clear. All the transport and taxi vehicles/scooters were on the other side of the road or further down. Memory lane.....wonderful. Your information and shots of the birds nest farming was interesting, it answered many questions I have in my head for a long time. Your videos remind me of the National Geographic articles and videos I have read and seen over the years.

Hi Yan, as always, very interesting content. Yes, the canned birdnest drinks at RM2.50 is nothing more than sugar, water and some artificial birdnest's flavouring. I personally do not consume this product, but my wife and dotter do, occcasionally. Frankly, as you mentioned at the end, and for me, there's no scietific proof of its health benefits. The hypes just pushed up the value of this product. Safe travelling.

It should have a certain effect. If it were introduced into ancient times, it would not be like there are many extracted nutrients now, many mothers die during childbirth, additional easily absorbed proteins, and some specific minerals are naturally harmless, which may greatly help women cope with the problems they face every month.

I consumed alot of it as the eldest son in the family when i was young. Now that i am 60yrs old, and my wife still prepare it for the entire family, ie my two adult children, my wife and myself.... yes she prepares it with a little natural cane sugar and water. When I was young it was prepared by my grandma who puts in a light chicken broth. She only use chickens she reared herself, so it was more savoury in taste. I am from Malaysia.

Hi Yan, the canned bird's nest drink is different from the more expensive ready-to-drink ones. The canned ones are flavoured, not really the real thing. It's like drinking artificially-flavoured orange cordial compared to freshly squeezed orange juice I guess? The proper ones are usually sold in little glass jars, with rock sugar water minimally. I'd say the bird's nest texture is like fungus, but I personally doubt the health benefits. It's acutally not excessively expensive to try once, or once in a while.

In the past, mothers spent lots of time picking out the feathers and debris from the nests, especially before their children's exams. They believe the brew will help them perform better. The hand picked ones do taste much better. They are slowly cooked in a bain-marie to preserve the taste and potency.

What are you on about? The infection rate in Australia is 20,000 a day and about 200 deaths. Just because there is no mention in the news does not make the virus disappear as it is a case of see no evil, hear no evil and therefore no evil. You are no expert and even the epidermiologists are not certain as this is a new virus and infection. You are dicing with death by not masking and it is also one's choice.
@hangtuah888

You sound like not wearing a mask is a fashion item. China National Health Commission understood that like a city the size of Chongqing, should 1% of the population is infected, there will be a potential need for beds of 320,000. So the gravity of the responsibility of the government is indeed high. Stupidity knows no bound.

Is good to know [local] Chinese can coexist with iban people. They are very open with their industry secrets😛. I have tasted genuine bird nest since I saw actual rehydration before consuming it.The taste if you liked to know was bouncier than vermicelli with a chew, the smell slightly sulphuric and eggy with distinctive,characteristic aromas.I will be very wary of entering the bird houses because of possible microbic lung infections.
