I remember this one! Great story. I also believe in the recording theory. Many, many years ago, when I was in my early 20's I was driving down a very busy rd in my hometown. As I was getting closer to the intersection, I had a green traffic light, I saw my best friends granddad walking down the road. I hit my brakes just as a driver came from the side rd running a red light. I would have been hit straight on my driver's side had I not hit the brakes out of pure shock of seeing a man who had passed away 4 years earlier! He walked that same way every day for 25+ years to buy the morning paper. He very possibly saved my life. I'll never forget that experience as long as I live.

The irony of it is I would swear that old man disliked me, really disliked me. For years when my friend and I were teenagers around him he would just grunt at me if I spoke to him. It's funny now but damn as a 14 year old I was terrified of him lol

I saw my next door neighbor once, when I was driving home from work. She was quite elderly, and hadn't been walking much; but her best friend lived about half a mile from her, and they had been in the habit of walking to visit each other. When I got up even with her, in front of her friend's house, she wasn't there, and I thought, that's odd. (It's not as if she had never been there. She was there. I thought she went behind some bushes, but when I got even with her, I could see there weren't any close enough.) A few minutes later when I got home, my mother said, "did you know Mrs. B died?" And I said, "no, but I just saw her at Mrs. P's house. She must have been saying goodbye."

My Mum told me this story about the Roman Soldiers in the cellar of the Treasurer's house in York. She heard it from her Mum, back in the olden days. (possibly the 1950s?) Imagine! Roman soldiers walking through the cellar! I think the Roman soldiers were just a time recording. That's why they weren't aware of Harry Martindale. I'm glad you got to meet and interview Mr. Martindale, Richard! Cheers! ~Janet in Canada

About 20 years ago now and I was talking to an elderly gentleman, a true gentleman as honest as the days long. He told me of a similar encounter in his younger years when he was a painter and decorator working at Broadgreen hospital in Liverpool. Himself & his 2 colleagues witnessed approx a dozen pairs of legs, waist down (kind of dangling from the corridor ceiling if you could imagine) marching past him & his work colleagues. Their impression was that they were Roman soldiers due to the footwear, they weren’t opaque or see through they were solid images approx 6 foot away from them, he remarked they were so crystal clear an image he could have reached out and touched them they were such a solid image.

Hi Richard, this interview was fantastic and your enthusiasm is contagious, I once met you at a book signing that you did a good few years ago in WHS in Meadowhall Sheffield, I still have my signed copy of your book but the thing that impressed me most of all was the fact that you listened to me and spent time answering my questions re a certain person, you told me that “ he was a very good showman” lol my son who was with me more or less shoved me along so that the queue of people, behind me could get their books signed and also meet you. I’m sorry for waffling but the story that I’d like to tell you is one that a neighbour of mine told me here in Barnsley, she’s a bit of a rough diamond bless her but I believe her %100, we both live in the same little square of bungalows, she is 73 and I am 70 but when what she told me took place she must have been in her late 40s early 50s she was a “ taxi driver in Barnsley at the time and was waiting to pick a fayre up on the main road into Barnsley coming up from Stairfoot roundabout, it was the early hours of the morning and while waiting for her customer she was parked on the side of the road near a forked junction, she looked up and was astonished to see a regiment of Roman soldiers, some on horses some marching, she says she didn’t hang about waiting for the customer but went straight back to the taxi office, told them what she had seen and that and that was her late night taxi driving carreer over and done with, this lady is no shrinking Violet and as with a lot of Barnsley folk, she calls a spade a spade, I have never researched about the Romans in Barnsley, I don’t suppose it was even called that then but I’m going to ask her if I see her tomorrow to tell me the story again, we arnt that far from York and I’m sure that there must be some “ Roman roads” close by, I just thought you might be interested in this story because it somewhat mirrors Mr Martindales .

I think it’s adorable to see someone who’s worked on a famous television show being so genuinely starstruck by an otherwise ordinary guy whose name is only recognizable within a specific circle of enthusiasts. I’m glad he decided to do this one last interview. For one thing, I might not have heard the story if he hadn’t, and I’m sure that’s true for many others - and it is indeed a great story. The best ghost stories are, like this one, supported by several credible witnesses, and elements like the thing about the details of what the soldiers were wearing. It all adds up to an account that even skeptics have a hard time picking apart. Having had my own first-hand encounters, I know where I stand, but it’s hard to convince most people that you know what you experienced, and it can take courage to share such stories. Well, I guess he’s learned what happens next - may his spirit rest in peace and joy. And many thanks to Mr. Felix, for sharing so many stories.

My school vicar told a story of being on a hike with his friends and it was pouring with rain when they came across an old house. They knocked on the door and asked if they could stay. They had a lovely meal and a good sleep overnight. They thanked them and left to walk on. When they reached the next village they were asked how come they where so dry after such a night. They told of where they stayed, the villagers told them the house was a ruin and had been for over a hundred years. They went back to see and it was a ruin. He never questioned if there were ghosts.
