They do, unfortunately the military aren’t actually run by the military but by politicians. Much of the military wanted to govern the empire very differently to how Whitehall wanted it done, and there are practically thousands of newspaper articles written by various figures from all parts of the establishment, but especially the military, warning that it could only ever lead to revolt. Books were even written on the subject. The biggest problem the military has is that it isn’t allowed to run things how it would really like to in its jurisdiction, because if they did everything would run perfectly and everyone would be safe and well provisioned, and then the public at home wouldn’t be scared of the military, which in turn would undermine the governments fundamental basis for control, and there would be nothing stopping the general public from more actively demanding the government be held to account.

He sounds like he is from South Wales to me, and the way that the soldier from either the Royal Irish Regiment or the Irish Guards saluted as the Welsh lad calls him "a paddy.. he's come to visit" made me laugh because I can imagine the banter between the Welsh and the Irish soldiers at that base. On a serious level he said it was May 2009. Both 2009 and 2010 were the worst two years for British casualties in Afghanistan (out of 455 killed between 2002 and 2014, half were killed between 2009-2010). During 2009 and 2010 about 220 British troops died (about 110 in both of those years and many hundreds of wounded in action each year, and the majority of the casualties were inflicted on young lads like this in the infantry battalions). It's good to see that they can laugh even though they were at a patrol base in Helmand Province and were probably engaged in a lot of intensive fighting during that time.
