Unfortunately now in the day of shoulder launched 3rd generation anti-aircraft missiles the A-10 would quickly be shot down. Afghanistan and Iraq did not have enemy combatants with these shoulder launched missiles The US looked at what if we sent all the A-10's were sent to Ukraine in spring 2024, and concluded that at least 50% of the aircraft would be shot down on every mission as the Russian Troops had such shoulder launched missiles, and that after day 4 there would be no A-10's left. The reality is that drones are going to take over most close air support missions. Its the only human safe method and its also far more cost effective. That is why the Air-Force wishes to phase out the A-10 now. Where can the US expect a foe not to have modern shoulder launched anti-aircraft missiles in the future, especially with their devastating proven effectiveness in Ukraine?
@meadmaker452526 күн бұрын
@@perryallan3524 - Pretty much all of that is incorrect. The man-pads, or shoulder-launched anti-aircraft missiles in Russian inventory are pretty sparse, and that's not counting the ones that just don't work because the majority of their gear is in pretty bad shape. The U.S. never considered sending A-10s into Ukraine. If they had, the A-10 has sufficient countermeasures to defeat modern man-pad systems and would not all be lost by day 4. The A-10 in this video was hit with AAA or "flak," which is why there were hundreds of holes in the air frame. AAA are basically large shells that explode at a given altitude, so cannot be countered, except by avoidance or taking out the AAA battery itself. A-10s also hunt in pairs or stacks of 4, and can be outfitted with HARM (High-speed Anti-Radiation Missile), which essentially locks on to the signal emitted by a man-pad when they're painting or tracking an aircraft to try to shoot down. The HARM missile tracks that signal to its source and destroys it. The U.S. Air Force also has aircraft teams designated "Wild Weasel" who specialize in hunting and destroying SAM and man-pad sites before other close air support aircraft move in. Drones are never going to replace the A-10 for close air support. Not even close. It would take weeks for a drone to try to carry the same amount of munitions from point A to point B, much less attack anything with it with any degree of accuracy. Using drones for ambush tactics, sneaking up and dropping a single grenade, is about all they're going to be good for. Even Predator drones can't put down the kind of ordinance an A-10 can, and they can't move anywhere near quickly enough to get to a hot zone in time to help. Drones are good for loitering and taking pot shots at easy targets here and there, and that's about it. The air force does not wish to phase-out the A-10. They never have. Politicians in Washington who want to fund their next multi-billion dollar pet project aircraft want to retire the A-10, but they have been unable to do so because the air force continues to fight them on it. And lastly, the only devastating effectiveness by man-pad munitions in Ukraine has been by Ukrainian soldiers using them to shoot down Russian helicopters, which are relatively soft/easy targets for those systems, and the Russians were stupid enough to fly those helicopters into enemy territory without top cover. In the end, the A-10's avionics, control systems, munitions, electronic warfare and countermeasures systems have all been consistently updated and it is not the soft target you seem to think it is. If the U.S. Air Force ever properly deployed in Ukraine, it would all be over in a matter of days. Russia's Wagner group has been on the wrong side of the USAF before. The ones who survived still have nightmares about how swift, accurate, and unrelenting the destruction was.

He put on the firesuit, climbed in and we fired up that 8000 horsepower hemi. Those 3 years working the A-10C was at Davis Monthan AFB in Arizona where I met Col. Campbell and I can say that she was one of my most favorite pilots to have come out and fly my jet. Not because she was an awesome pilot, but because she was a very Real and down-to-earth individual who did NOT treat me like a piece of furniture like some fighter pilots will do to the maintainers of the aircraft they fly. Most of the pilots you deal with as a maintainer are generally appreciative but it's the few that aren't that really get under your skin. Her book "Flying in the Face of Fear" is a good one for anybody looking to try to become a pilot in the military or just become a leader in their respective careers. Titanium is a very strong metal and has excellent heat dissipation, weight and form holding characteristics but it is not the strongest metal. However there is no metal that is as strong AND as light as titanium is, which is why aerospace engineers love to use the stuff to add strength and keep within weight restrictions when building planes. I just read some of the comments below mine...it seems that those who served on the ground can do nothing but heap praise on the A-10 but the Air Force wants it gone. Some say it is the best close air support vehicle on the planet while others say everything the A-10 can do, can be done better by other planes like the F-16. I remember seeing some of these A-10's returning to base missing half the tail, missing an engine, full of holes, giant chunks missing from a wing and the pilots still got them back to base. I don't know if the A-10 should be retired or not but if the Air Force does get rid of the plane - will someone let them know that I'd be more than happy to take possession of one or two of them? I dont wmeven care if they are flight capable or not, I just love the plane and it is NOT ugly.

What's really funny that not a lot of people understand about the A10, is the titanium bathtub and the titanium sleeves around the engine nacelles are really the only bits of armor on that entire aircraft, the rest of the airframe is comparatively paper thin metal and if it's seen combat most of it's probably Bondo at this point. It's designed so even if you hit it with small arms fire it overmatches and just goes straight through like a bullet through paper.

What was omitted from this story was that her 1st assignment after the gulf war was to A-10 pilot training command to develop and teach a reversion flying course, and to incorporate reversion flying into subsequent normal training exercises. Every A-10 pilot since that was started has spent extensive training hours flying and landing in reversion mode so that if they need it they really understand it. I understand a video of her Baghdad story and landing is the 1st thing in the course.

I was in the 75th FS working on A-10s back then. That FT on the tail was for Pope AFB which is where the squadron was based at the time. Think its at Moody afb now though. At the time I was young and didn't really comprehend how unlike other aircraft the A-10 was. Seeing one land with no hydraulics and a hole in the tail was impressive for sure, but having worked inside and out of every panel and knowing all the systems it wasn't surprising to me at the time. I knew it didn't need those hydraulics since I had to work around those darn metal cables running all over the place inside there after all. I had never worked on any other airplane other than in training though and thought it wasn't nearly as cool as the F-117 in the hanger, or the bucket with captured scorpions and camel spiders and whatever else they could find to fight. My first perhaps unfair thought was, it could have landed with a lot worse, was that all. In that moment, being shot at, in the air with all kinds of things screaming for attention and the ground coming up fast. Colonel Campbell kept her head and lived to tell this story because of it. Would have been so easy to, in that split second, reach for the ejection handles and probably end up dead. They don't treat captured female soldiers well in that part of the world generally.

You have the A-10, and the SR-71, those are probably two of the most well-known aircraft ever, iconic shapes, iconic capabilities, if you ask which one we cannot do without, not even a question, the A-10, they've been trying ot retire it for decades, the men on the ground will not allow it, they keep needing an airplane in that role, and NOTHING else even comes close to what it can do, it has been updated a few times, they're doing a mssive update now, but it might finally be the last. I just hope they go and design a new one with the same mission brief, you can only replace it with a better version of itself, everything else they've looked at doesn't cut it, update engines, materials, for sure the digital aspects so it is fully integrated into how things are done of the battlefield now, meaning helmets that are screens, cameras everywhere so they can basically look through the plane itself to see what is going on, can get better targeting data, and so on. There will be a predecessor for damn sure, this thing cannot last forever, they are flying tanks but far from invincible, they are NEEDED, let's hope they don't fuck it up.

You should know that most the clips of the A-10 here is just that . Clips from many other A-10 videos totally non related. So the landi ng after her mission was not actual footage of her landing.

Is that the Michigan pilot that abused an Idaho A-10? Who did she save again for putting her plane in so much danger? No one???

The A 10 was a wonderful airplane and did amazing work in Iraq. BUT! It is not a good choice in a high threat environment (like Ukraine or Hanoi). It never could have been so successful in Iraq if the Iraqi air defence environment had not been taken apart in the first few hours. That was due to the first 6 months (before the US crossed into Iraq) the US found every electronic emitter and command center and taking them out in the first few days. When every other enemy ground pounder has a MANPAD the A 10 is in deep trouble.
