The fact that Muhammed Ali changed his name because he considered Cassius Clay his "slave name" is an overdose of irony.
@ryangephardt2215 күн бұрын
The real irony is that he is related to the original. But still changed his name.
@DavidRichardson153Ай бұрын
I don't remember where I learned this, but someone pointed out that Muhammed Ali's original name was Cassius Clay _Junior._ It was his father, Cassius Clay Senior, who was actually named after the man. Clay Senior's father, Ali's grandfather, was one of the slaves who was owned by and then freed by Cassius Marcellus Clay, who, as TFE said, also gave him, along with the other slaves, what can only be described as a golden severance package. That man would go on to name his future son "Cassius Clay" to honor his liberator (the "senior" would come later with his son's, Junior's, birth).

@WilliamOsborne-ni8eoАй бұрын
He was never a slave.
@PAT8888-is2pdАй бұрын
@@WilliamOsborne-ni8eo yes. I am aware of that. I didn't say he was. I said that this was his explanation for changing his name. What I found was ironic was that if he felt that strongly about the source of the name, why did he convert to a religion that still, at least at that time, condone slavery. They don't now, at least not openly, because of international opinion and politics. Saudi Arabia didn't "officially" outlaw slavery until the 1960s and Mauritania didn't outlaw it until the 1980s. I can pretty much guarantee that it is still going on there because the Quran teaches them that it is not only their right to enslave the "unbelievers" but, their obligation.
