I have a 1 year old 20 lb mixed breed rescue dog. It's been 6 weeks of attempting the loose leash walk using a slip lead. I do the stop, turn around, treats, etc. It takes me an hour to go around the block using treats, stops turnarounds and so many corrections it's insane. 42 days later and there is zero improvement. My next step is the e/collar. Any advice?

Hi! I have recently adopted a rescue dog (newf/lab/gsd mix, 3yo). She was a horrible puller! What has helped me so far was switching out her harness (now a julius-k9) to "reset" her. Then I did the thing with not letting her get out of the door before she looks at me, and when we're walking I reward her when she's by my side and attentive, and when the leash gets tight I do the bumps on the leash while taking some steps back and rewarding her when I again have her attention. (you can find more info in other McCann leash vids) This has worked wonders! Still not perfect, but I can get around the block without my shoulders being pulled out of socket. At first I was trying the "be a tree" or turning around but it didn't click for her at all. I hope this maybe helps, or that you've already figured something out yourself :)

Head harnesses/collar's are really good so are slip leads that sit high up on the kneck. Body harnesses are terrible as it will make the dog pull even more.

My 5mo puppy is really super good on walks with me. She rarely pulls, and I can give a little tug and she will go back to loose. But, yesterday at the Vet’s office…she just went crazy and was super excited. I had treats and a Martindale collar, seemed to have nooo effect!. How do you get a puppy to behave with strangers or other people - especially if she gets rewarded by not behaving =(, by the strangers

how can I get my dog more comfortable with walking? Every time I try to walk her she gets scared by every noise she hears and would stop walking or just sit there not moving. I've been trying to make her more familiar with the outdoors but she still hasn't got used to it. She is currently 2 years old and I've been training her since she was a puppy but she is still scared of walking outdoors.

@@21cormorants picking up and cuddling the dog is only reinforcing the fear, sorry to say. Those responces work perfectly well for human babies beacuse human babies grow up and out of such needs from us, but dogs never will or do as long as you keep reinforcing their anxieties. My dog sits on a lounge by the window every day and on garbage / street tree pruning days/truck delivery days it's no different. When he did get anxious about it, I ignored him and allowed him to learn to use his own coping skills to deal with it. The same with those ' strange' plastic bags that appear overnite and greet him on his next walk. Ignore the dog and walk right up to the bag, pick it up and pretend to examine it, then discard it (without any words or eyes on the dog), then walk away and throw a ball etc. be a leader and your dog will follow confidently :)

We never treat trained my dog (or others in my group) in Lieu of treat, we always gave a deep, slow little chest rub. She came to love that more than anything. She had a rock solid recall - with NEVER a treat. Takes PATIENCE & CONSISTENCY above all. Stop training on a win, no matter how small - stop training if you get frustrated … the energy comes through the leash & they feel it

Could you PLEASE help? My dogs won't Sit which is a huge part of the Walking to Heel training ( Sit-Stay ). They will do other commands but they will not Sit. I've tried the "holding the treat above the head" thing etc. They are 3 year olds - not puppies. They rarely "Sit" naturally anyway, they kind of lie down or lounge. Every training clip I've watched on walking to heel require the dogs to Sit-Stay during the process. I'm really desperate.

@@krobinson4494 Well, you're right actually, one of them does - but not all three. I've two papillon / cairn terrier crosses (Carillons) and one staffie (the smallest of the carillons rules the roost of-course..) Her bark is obnoxious and my mother is elderly - they disturb her daily. I'm doing what I should have done years ago and trying to train them. Could kick myself. Don't get me wrong - they don't particularly _have_ to sit. I'm just looking for a _Walkies_ clip that doesn't require you to get them to Sit during the walk-to-heel tutorial. I'll take any suggestions - you don't have to be a pro Dog Trainer. Thanks for replying!

can you not press on the hips while holding the leash up? (I'm old, so I'm used to being more in charge, kindly physical, and (rarely) physically correcting, with kids and animals - but these days its more common to see parents and handlers doing all sorts of "begging" for compliance and accepting poor behavior for years.)

You use a lot of leash pressure and manual force by pushing her into a Sit several times in the video. Why wouldn't you simply ask her for a Sit and reward her correct choice when she does? This training method would be much more effective.
@collinwr46
@collinwr46 7 ай бұрын
I’d guess that once the dog’s attention is lost, there’s a low chance that asking them to sit would result in a success, especially the first time you say it. Whenever a dog is distracted by something and pursues it, they are rewarded if they’re able to continue exploring it, and the behavior is reinforced. The trainer is trying to immediately remove the external reward here

Everyone does it a different way. I like to reduce the amount of leash pressure I give so when I have to give pressure it's effective but with this little pup on a first walk that may not know sit I believe she was just showing the dog what she wanted. I really like watching different peoples methods and learning new things and maybe getting new ideas to work into my routine. Literally everyone has their own way they think is best and I find it interesting to watch. I don't think anything is wrong necessarily if it works for that person. I do believe there are proper or better techniques to practice over others to simplify things for the dog and the handler. But the main thing is time and patience, I think almost anyone is capable of training a dog with enough time and patience.
@kaiflynn3270
@kaiflynn3270 16 күн бұрын
they actually semi explained it in the video. if you lure them back into a sit with a treat every time they break command they learn how to get MORE rewards (by breaking the wanted behaviour and needing reset)

I like the core fundamentals but trainers need to get breed specific with this. My stock dogs do not respond to this sort of training at all. They need physical cues for the lines they don't cross. So I use a hockey stick to show the line where heel is. 20 mins later perfect heel, no treats. They're designed that way. A hound, no chance that training nor this training will yeild immediate response from them and their noses, you have to be more stubborn than them and that's just the truth of it. This training works really well for family dog breeds, (doodles, labs, ect) so I like the core fundamentals but it would not surprise me if there was a lot of "this isn't working" response to it. When I train I train individuals and to the breed. There is no generalized trianing or group classes.... Those just don't work.
@hannah.leblanc
@hannah.leblanc Жыл бұрын
Very true! We've raised a hound and multiple herding dogs, it was a night and day difference in how they responded to the same training. Folks definitely need to keep breed in mind when trying training methods.
