I'm on day 19 of the 30-day Study Challenge. Calculation on schedule! Black wins a pawn by 1...Rxh4 2.Rxf3 Rxf3 3.Qxf3 Nxe4 4.Nxe4 Qxe4 5.Qxe4 Rxe4, and black should win the endgame.

Hi Yevhenii, in that first example, I could see all that pressure on e5, but then I thought: well, 2 attacker, 2 defenders, so black's pawn is safe - and dropped that pawn from my consideration. We amateurs have a problem with quitting our analysis too early, partly because the deeper it has to go, the less confidence we have in it. So even if it looked promising, we might assume it's too risky because we might have missed something. How did you build your analysis quality and confidence? Is it just a matter of continuous practice? And did you ever, when you were starting out, have this kind of shaky feeling too?

Hi there! Yeah, that is a very good and difficult question. The general principle is that you stop calculating the variation when there are no active moves to continue it (checks, captures, threats), f4 is a threat so you should not stop the variation before you consider it. It's all theory, in practice we all make mistakes, my calculation is not perfect too and I might have the same problem as you, just on a higher level. This is a classical example where you improve by practicing again and again. Analyzing all active opportunities both you and for your opponent. At first it will be slow, but with the time it will be better. Also sometimes strategic understanding helps (like opening the long diagonal is extremely good for a Bb2 so you for ways to make it possible) but that's another topic :)

Having tried the sacrifices on h4 and g3 I realised that I need to distract White and the capture to do that is Nxc4, so that White cannot take the pawn f3 after Rxh4.

1...Nxc4 2.Qxc4 Rxh4. Best defence seems to be 3.Qf1 after which I couldn't find anything better than Rh6 with the idea Qh5 and Qh1# I think that White can only escape the mate by giving up his R for the pawn f3 after which Black has a large material advantage and still an attack.

R2H4, since P@G3 is locked it isn't a threat. If K runs to F3 it will be mate R2H1? I also thought maybe p2B5 to attack pC4 and K hoping they didn't see the N.

@@journeytograndmaster That depends completely on how well white plays. But the computer does read your initial position as significant advantage for black. I'm not going to argue it w you.
