Magnus too has often said that his first instinct is usually best, and much of his calculation time was in retrospect unnecessary. But this is based on years of experience (and talent), so I think it would be a huge mistake for us amateurs to think we too could use the pure intution approach.

Well, you are definitely correct, it comes from experience so it grows together with your level. But I feel you need to maintain a healthy balance regardless of your level, don't you?

The first move which comes to my mind is often a blunder, so I usually play a second move, without checking it, which is often a blunder too😅

Crazy game! The queen check gaining the almost queen was the turning point, I couldn’t believe you would survive this game, but the game was far from over! Interesting to see how resourceful players at this level are. I am subscribed, of course. I gave up blitz and in 2024 I will begin to play long time control, an attempt to make a new start in chess.

Bishop h3 would have resolved all your troubles; you resigned your powerful bishop to a passive, defensive game. Why? H3 your bishop controlled the diagonal and force the rooks to move, pinned the knight, and you had a check, with follow up with a Queen combined with a possible rook lift.
@journeytograndmaster

Well, I thought the bishop is also good on the long diagonal, attacking the c6 pawn. But I see your point, agree with you, thanks for the comment!

Day-20: incredible game. In the endgame maybe queen works better with a knight than with a bishop, is this why you find so difficult to find a solution?

Instead of Re1, Bh3 was possible if I'm not mistaken. If rook moves then Qe6+ picks up the knight and if Bh3 Rc5, Be6! Wins the exchange ig

Remarkable game! How do you develop the confidence to calculate accurately under pressure? Some of us amateurs might be able to calculate a little bit given lots of time, but under pressure fear of making mistakes sometimes causes us to give up and make moves more by guessing. We know this is very bad, but it's difficult to maintain effort without confidence.
@journeytograndmaster
@journeytograndmaster 10 ай бұрын
Well, you just exercise calculating over and over again and let the confidence build itself :) Seriously, you can never know that it's accurate, you just do your best and what should happen, happens. Then you analyze the game, check what was correct and what wrong, make conclusions and then start all over again :)

As another person really training calculation under pressure, try playing with shorter time control against bots if other players is to much pressure then once you go back to old time control it will feel like you have more time.

Early on, several comments/objectives about securing the B pair were referenced...generally believed worth slightly more (for advanced players) than a N by up to a quarter pawn. Generally. Heuristically. Sometimes. The possibility space of chess so large that our rules of thumb often getted rocked hard. Yes...the B has superior range. But only for one color. And here, it only ever commanded but a few squares. No less, in an open game to boot!! The broader, full-color complex coverage of the N was just more dynamic. And in today's timed-chess obsession, I think the knight's ability to complicated isn't properly accounted for materially. With a flag counting as a win, one can benefit nicely by having access to that critical resource. That's true in all levels of human chess. Not to be confused with engine chess. Sure, engines can better leverage bishops. But aspirations don't apply in human games. You don't serve yourself well believing you're carrying out theoretical chess. Pracitical/pragmatic chess offers better scoring capabilities...in human chess. So don't ever stress about not securing the B pair.

First of all, thanks a lot for your detailed opinion. I can agree with you that the shorter the time control is, the stronger the knight becomes. Apart from that, I have to say, I completely disagree with you :) Almost 20 years of my chess experience suggest that 2 bishops are a huge advantage. Not sometimes, not generally. Just much stronger. Hundreds of examples from the chess history suggest the same. Chess engines also confirm it, but it's not the only point for me. 2 Bishops are exactly so strong because they cover Both colors, not just one. I also analyzed hundreds if not thousands of my students' games which also proved my point. So I truly believe in the power of 2 bishops, which is why I will always advocate it (unless I am convinced otherwise of course). At the same time I appreciate the power of the knight, a very tricky piece. Sorry, that our opinions don't match but I guess, that's normal. Thanks again!

@@journeytograndmaster Too few chessplayers seem to be aware of Larry Kaufman's rules for the value of pieces, replacing old Fred Reinfeld's rules: Queen 9.75 pawns, rook 5 pawns, bishop or knight 3.25, with half a pawn bonus for the bishop pair. A "quality" thus equals 1.75 pawn, according to Kaufman. Kaufman's values are said to be based on a thorough mathematical analysis of a big number of various positions and stand for the average over these, rounded to the nearest quarter pawn. Of course, in a given position there may be circumstances to alter the numbers, but it is important to have the best values as a foundation to build on. Full respect to Reinfeld for developing his system, based on intuition and experience!

@@user-gr5tx6rd4h , very interesting, thanks! I didn't hear it too. I was told in my childhood though, that the bishop is 3.25.
