One of my biggest frustrations with automakers is they never take any of the tech developed in partnership with Chinese counterparts and bring it to other markets. Honda has had an electric "HR-V" equivalent for like 6 years, and yet still uses GM as a crutch to bring something to the US market.

Definitely one of the most interesting episodes thus far. The struggles of Ford to license Chinese battery tech shows how deep the resistance to Chinese dominance in the auto industry goes. It is not easy setting up shop in the US to sell vehicles, as Vinfast is finding out.

Tariffs against China will only cause Ford and GM to raise their own prices in the US frustrating consumers even more . What we are seeing is the decades-long story playing out where China has invested huge efforts into STEM and engineering in particular. Meanwhile in the US high school football stadiums with prices soaring past $100 million are becoming normal. This is called priorities. Those Americans lamenting the rise of Chinese car sales need only look in the mirror and wonder why we did not graduate Math and Science students instead of business majors and lawyers.

It won't change much if we're going to have 100% tarriffs added to all Chinese built vehicles. That'll hurt domestic companies' vehicles that are bulit there like the Envision and Nautilus that are shipped here.

Great episode. I'm headed to Hong Kong and Shenzhen next week. Hey @insidechinauto, anything cool EV specific to check out in those cities?
@InsideChinaAuto
@InsideChinaAuto Ай бұрын
Check out pretty much any big shopping centre in Shenzhen and you'll find a big chunk of the brands we talked about. You'll also likely see a bunch of new BYD stuff and prototypes. You might even see drone food delivery. It's a super modern city being only 30 or so years old. Hong Kong isn't really an EV haven yet but is an awesome place nonetheless.

Why doesn’t USA, make Chinese companies partner with American companies when they come to the United States?

That would be inconsistent with the treatment we gave to the Japanese, German, British, and Korean automakers over the last 60 years. The Chinese coud rightly claim that this was just as unfair as the tariffs. At least around tariffs there are historical precedents to perceived bad action by foreign governments giving their manufacturers unfair advantages over American companies.

@michaelterrazas1325
@michaelterrazas1325 Ай бұрын
@@Okefenokee_Nole Be that as it may, the actions a nation can reasonably take in trade have EVERYTHING to do with what that country has done before. Tariffs have long been considered a traditional way to limit trade, since they have their own limited uses. The PRC has essentially, with the exception of Tesla, required all nations to partner with a local company to have access to their hge market. The US has NEVER put such a stricture on other nations to have access to its markets. The imposition of such a burden ONLY on Chinese-based businesses will cause many of our partners to ask why. As a country, we will lose face because we will be admiting that we are just too incompetent to compete with the Chinese products. That is a tacit admission that Chinese products must be better than the rest of the world.

I saw Geely in the Philippines. It was equivalent to the US models but equal in price. Once you compare apples to apples Chinese isn’t so cheap. Just like the Japanese when they first came here in the late ‘50’s with Hondas and such that were the lowest priced they had and the lowest quality.

The US is erecting trade barriers to protect domestic car industries, especially in an election year. I just hope that the domestic carmakers don’t get complacent and slow down their technological development pace. They might be protected in the home market, but the Chinese EVs are going to outcompete them everywhere else.

That has changed. Yes, there are cheap quality vehicles made in China today, but all the experts agree most Chines manufacturers are now very competitive with the quality of vehicles made in the US, EU, Korea and Japan. Volvo is now a Chinese made vehicle. MG appears to be of better quality than when it was British owned.

That was only true when they started making cars. They learned (or copied if you like) from European and American makers how to build them right. Tesla's Chinese cars are as good as the Euro/US builds, Polestars sold in the US are built in China...look at this review by Autoline of the $10k BYD Seagull. It's fine. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6vZlYJjr8mfgck There are other reason to not buy a Chinese built EV, but build quality isn't one of them.

@@bullshitbingo2259 I have dealt with Chinese parts, motorcycles, batteries, and general products. Never been overly impressed with a Chinese product. When foreign companies design and QA things and the Chinese build them sometimes a very good product can be made.
