Technically a power "chord" isn't even a chord because it only consists of 2 notes, the root note and the perfect 5th.

But.... those open chords were already triads, they were only three note chords, with some repeating notes of course, but still only three notes.
@MorbidGuardian8 жыл бұрын
When he says triads, I think he means playing only the essential three notes without having any repeating ones. By playing only the three essential notes, this allows you to move up and down the fretboard more freely, creating more dynamic sounds.
@Boons___18 жыл бұрын
Dave B What this guy said ^
@you_tube6188 жыл бұрын
Dave B We know what he means but he is wrong.
@MorbidGuardian8 жыл бұрын
I don't really think he's wrong. According to what I know--and maybe I'm wrong--a triad refers specifically to the three essential notes of a chord, not any repeated notes. An open G-chord, for instance, is not a major triad itself, but it contains a few triads within it. It'd be helpful to message Music Is Win directly, since he's a Berkley trained musician and I'm only an amateur. He could probably clarify his statements better than me, since he has a larger body of knowledge.
@Boons___18 жыл бұрын
Dave B You're right. That is what Music is Win means. He even demonstrate it in his example. He also mentions other triads,like minor,augmented and diminished. He even brings up inversions with said triads. And I'm pretty sure that when he speaks of triads he litterally mean just the three notes of a chord.

I've been playing guitar for a few years now and am "pretty good" for the most part, but because I taught myself (after already having learned a couple of different instruments) I feel like I missed a LOT of the fundamentally important techniques and tricks that most guitarists pick up in a more logical way. With that said, I am so grateful you make these videos. They are so calming to watch and I have learned a lot even in the few weeks I have been subscribed. Practically applying theory can be tricky, but you make it really enjoyable. I'll definitely be buying your Super System course in the near future, and hopefully more thereafter!

Basically the standard style for many extreme metal bands. A solid rhythm track with open amd power chords mixed with a triad based lead track.
@ijamsum8 жыл бұрын
I like those because the finger positions are more closely a lead position also helping the player add notes in between the chords . Rock allows even 2 finger chord roots to change keys or chords ! Any position that has a high over top finger position like a standard Gmajor limits your ability to flow so I like a lower position for a quick hammering note and change ! Rarely do I play a standard D major because of position problems , unless a slow tempo is played like a turn-around chord !

I am seriously at a loss for words with that strangely perfect note at 2:38 ish... Didn't see a bend, did the string wrap off the fretboard? Guessing it was a happy accident;)
@johnmarquez3338 жыл бұрын
I noticed that, too. Sounded like you bend up to a note using the whammy bar, but you didn't touch the bar. Almost made me wonder if you were fingering over something you pre-recorded and forgot to do the effect.
@torrquemado19808 жыл бұрын
If you watch closely and repeat, you'll be able to see that -almost imperceivable slide from the index and middle fingers. The first string he picks is the B string, where his middle finger is still about to land. Happy accident or on purpose, I'm with you on the beauty of its ringing.

Yea the term he's really looking for is chord "voicings." Basically, for each chord the goal is to find its various voicings along the neck. To keep it simple, he's suggesting using just 3 notes (the triad that supports the chord, eliminating things like a flat 7th or add9) and finding all the different voicings for those. Once you're able to do this, your chord progressions will start to sound different than the open chords on the neck (Low Pitched G Chord, High Pitched D Chord, C Chord somewhere in the middle). Because you can start your G chord at a higher pitch so the movement from your G chord to your D chord can actually be a move DOWN in pitch
@obaku19808 жыл бұрын

by 'Triad' you mean "inversion". Every chord built with three letters a third apart in western harmony is a triad. Depending on how those 3 letters are arranged and played on the guitar neck or piano, will give you the various inversions of any triad.
@josephbelford41638 жыл бұрын
All 3 note chords including the open ones are triads. When you move up and down the neck and change the lowest root your are inverting the chords.

I thought you were going to say, just add the major 9th to the chord. lol but ya. Playing different inversions of the chords in a progression is very friendly to the ears. :-) Tell them what inversions are if they don't know. Instead of the order of notes you play in a chord is 1,3,5 , it could be 5,1,3 or 3,5,1 or 1,5,3 and could be on any 3 strings on the neck.

A great example of the difference even just a /little/ bit of knowledge about music theory can make. In addition to everything you say, I'd just like to point out that most chords (basic major, minor chords--not thinking about any extended harmony haha) are different combinations of the three notes in your basic triad. This is called tertian harmony and is the basic foundation for pretty much all of Western music. Once you get a good grasp of this, you're no longer confined to "traditional chord shapes," which, as you point out, aren't wrong but I'll assert that they're a little ordinary. Study your theory! It isn't useless!
