The altered dominant scale, a scale that uses a form of the melodic minor scale with a different root, is only meant to be used over the V chord (thus the name altered DOMINANT scale) when the next chord is the I chord. It is particularly meant to be used when b5,#5, b9, #9 dominant chords are used like E7#9 WHEN FOLLOWED by an Am, A7 or A major chord. . The E altered dominant scale notes are E-root F-b9, G-#9, G#-major 3rd, Bb- b5, C-#5, D-minor7, E -root. All the 'out' notes can be used on the V chord because the next change is going back the strong I or tonic chord for resolution. The unaltered melodic minor scale can be used to solo over dominant chords in a blues like A7, D7, and E7. But you have to use the melodic minor scale a fifth up from the chord you are playing, e.g. an E melodic minor scale over the A7.The E melodic minor notes when played over an A7 are E-major 5, F# -major 6, G - dominant7, A- root, B - major 9th, C# major 3d and D# major7 , all the notes sympathetic to the dominant 7 ( major/minor7th) and it's extensions. The major 7th is only meant to be used as a passing tone used slurred into the root but since the dominant 7 chord also contains a major chord in it's base the major7 is a legitimate note. The A altered dominant scale and the D altered dominant scale are not meant to be used over the A7 and D7 in an A7, D7, E7 blues. You can hear what happens when you do on your own video, extremely discordant. The E altered dominant scale can be used over the E7, E7b5, E7#5, E7b9 and E7#9 in a blued . E,F, G, G#, A#/Bb, C, D and E but it gives a jazzy kind of sound that many times would sound out of place, yet consonant. Altered dominant scales work best with 'smooth jazz' and bebop genres, generally.

Maj penta can go on anywhere but is perfect for the I7 Min penta can also go anywhere but is perfect for the IV7 especially because that b7 in IV is a b3 in the key and so minor sounds right at home here Altered Dom is great for the V7 both at bar 9 but even better at bar 12. The outside sound is great as a leading tone for anything into maj penta. Altered dom can also be used to move from IV7 -> I7 because of shared notes in min penta and altered dom that fit under IV7

So the third scale demo'd here is the 7th mode of the Melodic minor scale? (the altered scale)? I've heard (never tried) that you can improvise over any dominant 7th chord with the Alt Scale by playing one semi tone up from the root of the V7 chord. E.g., G7 { G, B, D, F} >> Ab Alt. {Ab, A, B, C, D, E, Gb} Seems like there are passing tones here to be mindful of...but it DOES sound really cool.

I got a real serious question for you guys. I’ve been looking for an answer but so far I’m stumped, I have been playing blues guitar for a few years now but was never really any good at it. I’ve always been a lead vocalist, and wouldn’t play onstage. I’d mess around on acoustic at home writing songs, and am fluent in rhythm but not lead. So thus one night I’m playing and all of a sudden best way I can describe it is that it felt like time stopped and something I could not see hit me in the solar plexus, at that moment, it felt as if thrrr was no more me and the guitar, it was just one ball of concentrated musical power, also there was something very sexual, to the feeling I got as I wailed on my stratocaster, to thr point that it was nearly orgasmic. It’s the Craziest thing that’s ever happened to me while making music . and I’ve been gigging regularly In a rock band for 15 years. Also when I play I get a magnetic tugging sensation coming from what seems to be the guitar itself and my body. It pulled me so hard once I almost fell over. I thought at first it was a spirit pulling on me as my house is very active but I’m starting to believe it’s something else.i have been looking online to see if at least one person has reported having a similar thing happen to them but have found nothing. It has me at a loss. I was never able to play lead, at all to save my life. But I never gave it much effort really, but to go from one minute not knowing any scales or even being able to use my pinkie finger to the next being able to see the notes in in my minds eye and have speed like Stevie Ray , was amazing, and doesn’t seem normal. I guess I should Just accept it and let it go but I’m very curious to know if this has happened to anyone else.

What kind of scale was used like for example in John Mayer's "Come When I Call"? Is it a mix of both the minor and major blues scale? I'm intrigued by it because the sound is not straight pentatonic and it seems to only work in twelve-bar blues and usually not in blues rock which is why you get the feeling of a twelve-bar progression. Like there's a lick that goes 3h4 in the G string then goes back to minor pentatonic in G. Does it have to do with the chords involved in the song? Sorry I don't know how to explain it and I don't know much music theory.
@antreb157 жыл бұрын
You mute those strings really well to get clean notes. Nice lesson.
