I feel like Metal Gear has always been a sort of iterative process, with especially in the first 4 games, repeats of different ideas until the idea could be fully realized. Like if you really look at it, MG, MG2, MGS, and MGS2, were essentially the same game, lots of events that mirrored each other from one game to the next, but iterated on and perfected each time, with MGS2 taking this idea and going super meta with it, almost bringing this idea into the story itself, like Raiden was just pantomiming those previous iterations. In a way he was sorta realizing their culmination, from a mechanical perspective. But even just from a gameplay perspective, MG2 feels almost as much like a 2D version of MGS as MGS: Ghost Babel did, just in the feel of the gameplay, the way crawling and hiding works, and how the boss fights are structured, you really just feel echos of MGS. The first 3 games especially feel like an image slowly coming into focus, with MGS2 putting that image in a nice frame. Kojima sorta did this again with Portable Ops, Peacewalker, and TPP. But instead of it being the Tactical Espionage Action Formula, it was more the Tactical Espionage Operations formula, where it brings in battlefield logistics and the sense of running a much larger scale operation from the perspective of a commander. Each game felt like it tried to build on this idea, until TPP was technologically on the level that it could fully realize the idea.

I’d like to hear your take on how subsequent Big Boss games affect your interpretation of the MSX games and his journey in them, going from very straightforward on release to extremely vague by later entries.
@ForceWave-11393 жыл бұрын
Big Boss hasn’t been a straightforward character since MG2. His goal was to create a nation where soldiers wouldn’t be used and abused by their governments, which leads him to desire a world plunged into perpetual warfare. The prequels don’t really change this; they just show how Big Boss arrived at those conclusions. The Patriots’ global control would’ve been in the way of his objective of global chaos, hence why he opposed them.
@Alex_Logan223 жыл бұрын
@@ForceWave-1139 Uh, except that literally was never the motivating factor behind Outer Heaven or their conflict with Zero/Patriots. At least not in the games. Also, the initial war mongering Big Boss was definitely 2 dimensional/straightforward, but in Peace Walker he's actively opposed/against being put in that position, even in TPP when craving revenge, it never dictated his decisions. He's always against him or his army being a part of unnecessary war. He never instigates any conflicts, only responds to them. If we are to take the events of MG2 verbatim as a game taking place after Peace Walker/MGSV, than he would have to be putting on an act.
