Number 1 skill *software engineers* need is the *patience* which is usually not found in them
@BiancaAguglia5 жыл бұрын
There's a reason they say that "patience is a virtue." Lack of patience is something we all struggle with, not just software engineers. We all want things fast. 😊 But yes, you're right: patience is an important skill.

Last 10 seconds is you speaking regular English, but in reverse. And wow, that is extremely accurate and unfortunately a prevalent con in our industry, if not many. Its also very underlooked. So many times Ive seen this happen where miscommunication or gaps in communication lead to further problems that could have easily been avoided if it was done properly. I cant stress more of what you said. I think companies should stress more in better communication practices such as speaking or writing clearly. Its a norm in so many firms Ive worked at to completely underestimate good communication skills to a point where people are just making assumptions of what the other person is saying and gambling with the outcome..
@clem5 жыл бұрын
atif tirmizi Exactly! Communication is just an underestimated and overlooked skill, and people and organizations learn this the hard way!

Your choice for most important skill surprised me. I expected that most important skill to be something like: 1. googling your way out of bugs 😁, or 2. focus, or 3. perseverance. I like the supporting examples you gave. You did a good job explaining the reasoning behind your choice.

Another important skill is the programing language that you are working on. If you spend a lot of time working in an obsolete language, it may get harder to catch on with someone that had more experience with a more novel language.

One suggestion : You can make a video on your bonding with colleagues. It can be useful for others joining new company. Shall one be highly competitive or supportive to other colleagues? How do you deal with them?

if you had to choose between 2 concentrations for CompSci degree; ::: Software Engineering & Design ::: (Principles of Software Design & Databases, Software Engineering Lifecycle, etc) ::: Algorithms & Theory ::: (Heavy Math, "Advanced Algos", Machine Learning, etc) Which would you choose?
@clem5 жыл бұрын
This is a very hard choice; both sound very good. The first one seems more practical, but I would argue that the second one might end up more useful because the topics taught there might be harder to learn outside of a class setting, and the math + advanced algos will give you a big edge in coding interviews. Also, the Machine Learning will be a big plus for your career in general. I hope this helps!

Well it sounded like Dothroki language from GoT. :D I sometimes wonder whether engineers from these FANG companies have the luxury(of time) to watch TV series or Netflix, just wanted an insight, or they are so much attracted by the golden handcuffs that they don't even want to get out of the office (slogging 12hrs maybe)given there are so much perks(like free food) in an attractive office space like google. Or maybe like an outside life where you go to watch a baseball game, or formula 1 or a barcelona match live. Is it like the Golden cage? Or is there a good work life balance? Some insight would be appreciated.
@clem5 жыл бұрын
😂 and I think it really depends on the individual, their goals, their hobbies, etc.. Some definitely just "put in their 8 hours" so to speak and then leave and do other stuff. Others get more pulled into the perks and stay much longer in the office.
