All his friends, people in South park and even his own parents, including his grandma are all bad people. I feel bad for him because he really has no one to protect him or no one who can really help him or even anyone who he can tell these things to, except his alter ego, who can barely do anything even slightly "evil". He is like the only sheep surrounded by bunch of wolves, there's no one to help him. No one listens to him, except us.

I get butters being nice but Kenny? Lol. He's just on par with Stan and Kyle. What seems to be a sweet young kid in the outside is actually a sick pervert on the inside. Same with Kyle being the voice of reason yet being the impersonation of overreaction, Stan being the compassionate one yet when he does something that is praised he lets pretentiousness, cynicism, and arrogance cloud his mind and Cartman being.. Well, Cartman. Maybe Cartman is just the embodiment of all the boys' traits. But I'm not too sure about Kenny's perversion tho. Maybe the creators will explore his sick mind even more.

I feel like a small defining moment that shows how different Butters is from everyone else is the beginning of Dances with Smurfs when a ginger kid is being beaten and murdered over the intercom. Meanwhile Butters is the only one who’s reacting realistically.

South Park is that type of show that showcases how chaotic, idiotic, cruel and unfair the world around you can be. (in a comedic fashion of course.) And Butters showcases that even if the world is complete bonkers doesn't mean you have to be. the thing about butters is that he’s not actually all that naive or sheltered. like this kid gets goes through a lot of trauma through pure acceptance in a way the other kids can’t. butters gets constantly grounded by his parents, has been his entire life, so he’s used to being suddenly getting “benched”, for arbitrary reasons, and he’s learned acceptance of himself and sudden, unpredictable periods of being forced to focus on himself. the problems the gang gets into nearly always involve someone experiencing something that challenges their view of who THEY are, like when Cartman makes Kyle question his sense of moral superiority, or pretty much any time Randy does anything. Butters has become accustomed to being BY himself, but also WITH himself, and as such his dark side is mostly just a mischievous scamp doing a cartoon cackle; there’s not much about Butters that he’s afraid to acknowledge, to the point that his primary anxieties are about his personal potential to disrupt routines (while having no particular concept of the relative importance these routines have, bc of the constants arbitrary grounding). Butters knows himself, accepts himself, and so he can experience deeply traumatic situations without leading to these elaborate ego-death-and-spiritual-resurrection internal dramas (expressed through outward scenarios that are impossibly outrageous bc cartoon) that afflict his peers. butters has a different kind of trauma, and a differently mapped brain, and it leads him to focus on different facets of his experience. tldr hey he not dumb he’s just like my little guy, he’s cool he’s like this little guy,

Something that happened in the later seasons of South Park is that Kenny was slowly fazed out of the show outside of a couple smaller B plots and he was replaced with Butters. The main reason I believe is because Matt and Trey both agreed that Kenny dying every episode became an old played out joke that has no more comedic value. To make things worse you can't understand the majority of what Kenny says which limits their jokes with that character even more. So they often just replaced Kenny with Butters, who is one of the most varied characters in South Park which allowed them the freedom to write much more complex and funny jokes.

This made me think of the Subway episode when Cartman cussed out Butters’s parents and they came back home and horribly beat Butters even though he didn’t say it. I legit don’t like watching the end of the episode for that reason. Also I do think that one character who is the closest to being another straight man in the series is Stan’s mom, Sharon. However, she doesn’t shine much she’s just a regular mom.

Butters is just all around my favorite character. Obviously all the main boys are great too and some of their friends and family has their shining moments like Tweak and Craig, but I feel the main reason why I attach to Butters so much is how despite how realistically and unrealistically awful his situation is, he still stays a nice, caring, and happy person. He does have his moments where he lashes out and is understandably fed up with how people treat him, but for the most part he stays a genuinely nice and loving person despite his situation. Abusive parents, bullies at school, even his friends don't really treat him all that great, toxic extended family, gets constantly used and stepped on by others, almost killed, was abandoned at on point because they were playing hide and seek and couldn't find him, and he even got put into a gay conversion camp by his awful parents poor judgement. And yet he's still just your everyday loveable Butters. And I feel that's something that everyone can strive to be. To keep your sense of self despite all the bullshit we get put through.

Your writing is seriously incredible. You got everything across so well, you put thoughts I didn’t even realize I had into words. I never noticed why a lot of the episodes I like include Butters, but this is probably why. He is seriously a very realistic portrayal of a kid his age and I guess I never realized that his upbringing is the reason why he is so naive. Again, your writing is incredible. I’m definitely going to subscribe to you and you can bet that I’ll tune in for another in the future.

Nice choice of background music with the slow jazz version of Departure. It fits a video about Butters so well.

I’m so happy you made this, Butters has always been my absolute favorite and I’ve held this same view. My favorite episode (although it’s tied with the Imaginationland episodes) is the one where he starts a “kissing company” and becomes a pimp, “do you know what I am saying?” haha-Thanks for sharing! I subscribed.

You should read and watch Berserk. I'd really like to hear your piece on it. Warning: it delves into the depths of human depravity and gets really dark, but it's done well. It's not just shock value. The opening arc can be a bit deceiving, though.

I'm bit disappointed because Beavis and Butthead wasn't used as an example of a great show with terrible leads because Beavis and Butthead was the major influence for both South Park and Rick and Morty. Otherwise, this video is perfect and Butters is hands down one of the best South Park characters.

Butters, Kenny, Heidi, and Token are the nicest characters on the show. Granted Cartman has gotten each to do horrible things but still

Butters the kid that came out of nowhere and took control of the show and became a lead. Butters a background character who became a main character. Butters who made the South Park Four into the South Park Five. Butters steals the show with magic in his heart and a tune in is head and he'll sing it while skipping down the street and putting a smile on everyone's face. Butters is what a kid thrust into the crap the other four get into would be like. Butters who until this day while being more of a lead than Kenny yet hasn't been used in the opening. PUT THIS MAN IN THE OPENING.

The two charaters that bes represent me in the show are Kenny and my boy Butters, he's a true CHAD in his own right, the capacity to remain inocent and thoughful in a world where everyone's an a-hole to him is just admirable

Butters getting mistreated makes the show really hard to watch at times. These characters and their fates rarely change. I was very optimistic and sweet as a kid and was abused a lot and it can be hard watching the same gag over and over again. Obviously it's just a cartoon but sometimes these wild characters truly act like how actual kids would. I'm always like this with punching bag character tropes lol
