Space Jam isn't really something you can write a sequel to without changing the premise. Otherwise you just end up with a near-copy. One of the biggest sins of this movie is its run time. As flawed as the original Space Jam is, its running time was reasonably short and the story was primarily centered around the main premise of Looney Tunes playing basketball with Michael Jordan. Space Jam 2 has no business clocking in just before the 2 hour mark. The writers really over complicated the premise while trying to justify this Warner Bros. Universe which was a complete waste of time. Heck, the movie barely even had any basketball. Oh no. Don't tell me. Space Jam 2 was just another attempt at creating a cinematic universe, wasn't it? That would explain too much about why the movie is structured the way it is. I don't know how they could make the movie more corporate than the original, but they somehow did it.

At the very least, this movie gave me a newfound appreciation for the original Space Jam. It's a weird movie to be sure, but it fully embraces its weirdness without trying to be ironic or painfully self-aware; it just let's the Looney Tunes be the Looney Tunes. It doesn't try to justify or apologize for anything it offers. Space Jam basically comes out saying "We're gonna do all this weird shit and have a good time, and maybe you will too! Or maybe not; we don't care! It's time to slam now!" Meanwhile, Space Jam 2: The Search for More Money is like "Hey remember all that stuff you liked? Well here's even more stuff! Maybe the only reason why I liked it was because I was a dumb kid who liked dumb things, and the movie was dumb but funny." Just pointing out that Ebert, one of the most respected film critics ever, said it was a good movie, rated it 3.5/4, and also put it on his list of his 10 favorite sports movies. I think the part of Porky Pig rapping is supposed to be another reference to the original, or at least the soundtrack. The last track on the album is called "Buggin' " and its a Bugs Bunny 90s hip hop track. Fun fact, the lyrics to that song are rumored to be ghostwritten by Jay-Z. And while it does have that kid pandering sound of the time, its not totally terrible. I grew up with the movie, so I have a soft spot for it, and I have mad respect for Billy West as a VA. But they didn't put the track in the film. Honestly, I'm glad they didn't because if they had animated it, it probably would've looked just as bad as what that Porky Pig scene looks like.

I'd watch the original Space Jam on VHS a lot as a kid and still enjoy it to this day because it's just a fun movie to watch and it felt like the production team had fun with making it too. New Legacy feels like they just wanted to get it over with and give shoutouts to other properties they own (because that's just kinda their thing now)
