Great video and advice. This is the one thing that messed me up many years ago (1988 ish) . I was at the end of my coaching course and on the exam weekend, the visiting national coach decided it was the best time to introduce everyone to the "new" technique of loading the shoulders and pushing towards the target - Rick McKinney- style. That compressive pressure I was exerting towards the gold (that you describe) was no good any more and now we had to be "dynamic". I needed the drawing shoulder blade to come round and the bow shoulder to be make a movement forwards. bringing the sight ring down onto to gold to form an 'eye' shape and the final fluid push would go through the clicker and plop into the centre of the gold. This guy pushed and pushed for us to learn this and many were put off. I practiced for ages afterwards, my scores went down and I couldn't control it. Everything was moving and rarely in the right direction. When I moved to compound I disregarded it and shot perfect rounds. That was in the early 2000s, when I stopped. I returned a year and a half ago to 3D archery; much simpler concepts and much less stress. In my time away I missed all this "Lee" system you talk of, but see it's the standard for every archer now; it's much like my old structured draw set up before I was messed up... But that flick of the wrist and bow drop at the end always makes me cringe.

Very well described and very understandable! Well done! At last I am doing something right (almost)! I've pushed my bow hand towards the target since I started shooting. As an engineer it sort of made sense to do that. What I wasn't doing was pushing it towards where I want the arrow to go. I'm shooting barebow and gap shooting because under the rules I shoot, string walking isn't allowed. I was pushing towards the point of aim and not the point of impact. Because the point of aim is variable depending on distance, it must have been causing some degree of inconsistency and we don't always get that gap right so there's the uncertainty along with that. Too many things going on in the head at once is a huge drawback! I've just practised a few ends pushing towards the point I want to hit instead of the point of aim and it most definitely works better for me. Thinking clearly about hitting that kill zone takes away a little "anxiety" and allows me to focus more on the tension and release instead of worrying about the gap being correct etc. Many thanks for another super helpful video!

Funnily enough, this clicked for me a few days ago. After an abysmal tournament I was analyzing my form at the club and at some point I started visualizing a line from the wrist of my draw hand, through my hook, through the pressure point of my bow hand to the center of the target. Throughout expansion, the expansion itself and every minute adjustment made had to be on that line. Once I shot a few arrows and started landing 10s again, a light went on in my hand and I realized that tension and direction was more than just pushing the bow towards the target. Also, in instinctive tradbow they say "aim small, miss small" to signify the importance of aiming at the smallest possible point. Some will even train that in everyday life by taking a spot in the distance and try to make out the smallest possible detail.

Hey Jake, Guy Gerig here. 100 yrs ago it was described to me by Bud Fowlks as looking toward the ten ring as if you had an eyeball on the front of your wrist. I've used that analogy since. Good stuff

Can't thank you enough for this Jake. Have been shooting barebow for 3 years and lately been focussing on the bowhand. Your explanation of how the bowhand plays its part in the tension and expansion really makes sense and added to the circular motion of the draw is a revelation. Applied it immediately in practice and after one end, put all 6 arrows in the gold (60cm target at 30m). Then did one of the best indoor practice sessions ever. Somehow it makes aiming easier/less important. .... just brilliant. Certainly works for me.

I have always had trouble aiming off. Now I have some insight in what to do next. I think I will go practice tension and direction and monitor my tension and direction....right after I fletch these arrows.

I used to shoot just like that when I shot compound unlimited I completely understand .But I had a rotator cuff repair and haven't been able to shoot compound since I'm shooting English longbow .But I know it's wrong what I do .But I'm going to what you are saying now .thank you Jake .

Man thank you. It could be my mistake. I really trained my grip. But still my hand moves at release. I thought I was using torque. It is not big movement but enough to shoot outside my group. I will try thinking the bow as slingshot =) This is try to simplify it. Sucks. I shoot heavy for 5 days in row and giving myself 2 days to rest my shoulders. Your channel is awesome. I can't afford to shoot at a club. So this is great resource. I am saving up for club. I am on disability. Bow shooting is really good for my headspace

From a novice..I find any pushing thought with my bow hand distracting to the pulling from expansion. I stumbled onto the idea of visually placing my hand on the X and pulling the arrow stuck in it out with the expansion. The bow hand is bracing against the target as you expand.

I've been trying to internalize this ever since I saw your first video on the subject but for some reason I'm still struggling. I'm aware of the direction I'm exerting pressure and I immediately know how to compensate if a shot is about to break when I'm pushing the wrong way, but for some reason I find it hard to consistently control the direction throughout the shot sequence. Not sure why. The rubber band thing actually looks like it might help, might try that. Any other pointers as to how one should practice to get past this barrier?

When I use this form and I keep pushing with my bow hand and drop my hand to rotate the bow my lower limb always ricochets off my belly just at belt buckle height up to my belly button and torques the bow. That effect puts a lot of strain on my wrist. Does this have any effect on my shot?

I always had a collapsing bow-arm until my trainer suggested I shouldn‘t think about pushing the bow but rather leading it with my fingers. She also doesn‘t talk about pulling the string, rather opening the bow as a fluid motion. Pretty inspiring how words can teach your body to do motions differently

Regarding, "pushing with conviction where you want the arrow to go..." add one more, that gets it. I've been explaining at the range, when it comes up that The archer like a ballroom dancer forms a frame with their shoulder girdle and upper extremities. This frame operates independent of the lower torso which is rock solid grounded.. 1. Develop one's shot process, it creates a projectile Vector on target 2. Learn to focus with precision on the targeting point. This through the brain, one's targeting system, provides the actual Vector to Target 3. One s Bow hand contact point and expansion combine to create the projectile vector, as expansion continues through s clean release both projectile and laser visual intention vectors are brought into parity at release, reaction physics are clean X s every time LOL Or the archer as a laser guided weapons sys.

The feel I could describe if I were to do what you do correctly is a really balanced feel of the shot like the release felt good and everything just falls into place. It's kinda hard to describe but if I push correctly then the whole shot just flows great from there onward.

Archery is a mental sport. There are a lot of things to do to execute a shot and there are a lot of things going on in your mind that interfere with this. The brain has to execute the shot without interfering with it. This can only happen through a large amount of practice. The more practice the more the brain will do what it needs to do without you thinking about it. Concentration is important but you can't think about the steps and try to execture them better and get a better shot. The muscle memory has to do the work. You can interfere with this if you think differently while trying to do a good shot than you do normally. Focus on what you are doing, go through the steps, every time when you practice and it will be automatic when you are in a tournament. Maintain the tension/direction for every shot, whether you are in a tournament, on the practice range, or horsing around with friends. I would shoot in the spring then lay off for a long period of time, then get back the next spring. I found for myself that it took a period of time of practice and training before I could do well, and midway through this period I couldn't pick up the bow and concentrate on the steps and automatically shoot a ten. The muscle memory wasn't there. At some point during my training it would suddenly click and if I did what I was supposed to to set up the shot, it would be a good shot. So don't get discouraged when you are training. Put in the work and at some point it will click and start to pay off.

Thank you very much, I have always been so confused about the process of expansion and I've been shooting recurve for 4 years now. Though I have joined a lot of local and state competitions and performed "okay" I still have doubts about my form especially expansion and bow arm position. But, upon watching your videos from time to time especially the form series, I have learned a lot of techniques from you that really make sense to me which I can easily incorporate into my routine. It is because you explained every step and every technique thoroughly which makes understanding and incorporating it easy, especially I am only shooting alone in our backyard with no proper guidance of an archery coach given restrictions due to covid. Your channel has been my virtual coach and I feel a lot of changes in my shooting routine especially the shooting feeling, my groups are tighter now, and my shot execution has felt smoother. Once again thank you for offering free coaching, more power to you and your channel.

Jake, but this is what trad/instinctive shooters do! The main thing there is learn how go into the mode when your intention to hit specific spot becomes determination. You just hit whatever you wanted to hit. The problem is - this mode is hard to maintain over extended period of time.

Its straight, I cannot hyper extend, but its locked for sure.
