Hmm. Well "Seven Samurai" in which seven heroes defend a town against an attacking horde sounds awfully like "Seven against Thebes" in which seven heroes defend a town against an attacking horde but you don't hear Aeschylus complaining that Kurosawa stole his idea. Of course that might be because Aeschylus wrote his play in 467BC, but even so......

Actually Kurosawa was reading Hammett's Red Harvest and The Glass Key. The scene where Mifune's or Eastwood's character is nabbed by a giant wrestler and locked up then escapes by crawling under the floor boards is our of The Glass Key, which was not a detective novel, like most of Hammett's output. It was a story of corrupt politics.

i took it upon myself to watch IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT; solid movie, I'd never seen a clark gable flick before, and wowee that guy's charismatic. yet to see COMMANDO, but you can never go wrong pulling inspo from RASHOMON. thanks for the recommendation!
