Actually dinner was, and still is, defined as the main meal of the day. It is just a cultural shift that that meal is now supper (the evening meal) and was the midday meal then. Not just a synonym for lunch. I would guess the cost of lighting to illuminate a large evening meal was part of the reason the midday meal was the main one. Eating a smaller meal wouldn't require the ceremony and associated lighting in the dark.

Can we talk about "Your excellency, they burned your whole palace" real quick? Already very deep but there's a lot more to it. Washington specifically said that people should call the president "Mr. President" so that he was not treated like royalty in order to help establish the republic. The fact that they called Madison "your excellency" and referred to the White House as a "palace" shows how fed up they are with Madison. He's being childish asking about his library(without asking how his wife was, might I add) and these people were fed up with how self-absorbed he was. So much so, that they compared him to a king, whom they vehemently hated! Truly badass!

American here. Learned about it briefly in middle school, talked about the impressment, White House burning down, George Washington’s portrait being saved, star spangled banner, Native Americans having to pick sides (from what I remember). High school ed. had slightly more but mainly focused on how afterwards America was taken more seriously as an independent nation.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Laura Secord in this. She was a Canadian during 1812 who's the reason the British forces were able to push the American troops out of their territories. Story goes, while she was living in a section of now-Canada that had been recently taken over by America's army, she overheard a bunch of soldiers boasting about a secret upcoming attack against the British army that would gain them the rest of Upper now-Canada (in their defence, the soldiers were drunk and had been in her house at the time, eating her food). Upon hearing this, Secord proceeded to trek through 20 miles of enemy territory (with her cow in some versions), and managed to outrun the American army and warn the British to get their butts into gear for the surprise attack that was coming their way. Because of her, the British were able to prepare their forces and managed to push the Americans out of now-Canada completely. Sources vary, but some people believe that if it was not for her, America might have won 1812, and Canada as a country would not exist today.

fun fact: dolly actually ordered a fifteen year old black slave to save it and then she frickin bolted. a Frenchmen tried to help but then other servants, that were saving stuff bc dolly just grabbed silverware and ditched, ran in to the burning White House and told the Frenchmen and 15 year old Paul Jennings that the British were like ten miles out. so then, the French servant just left along w other slaves while Jennings had decided to break the frame to save the canvas. Dolly saved herself w these “letters” and the Madison family had a painting made to portray dolly all elegant and fancy and on the left side there’s Jennings but he looks like a middle aged man instead of the 15 yr old he was
