There is a very basic word in English that’s used by most people almost every single day, but that many, many learners of English mispronounce. I will teach you EXACTLY how to pronounce this word correctly so that you have no more mistakes. You’ll also learn more about the sound in this word that causes confusion and I’ll give you examples of other words that have the same pattern. Very interesting. Easy sound for a dane or norwegian because it's the same sound as our letter ø. Perhaps a reminiscense of old norse elements in english or a common sound shared between languages that were closer related 1000 years ago, and where the sound still excists in a few english words. In danish its a very common sound found in many words.

After you point out that the letter w in the beginning changes the value of the o (like in word, world, worm, work, worth, worthy, worse)- it's easier for the students to remember. There is a rule here (with the exception of wore, worn). While in other words like stork, cork, shore, snore, snort, core, tore, torn, etc.-- always /o:/

I am not sure, because i am not an english man, but i think "to work" with the right pronunciation is mostly present, think on the beatles: "we can work it out" or "Lets work together". from Canned Heat. I think the most problems are to speak the "th" right , where your tougue sligthly touches the lips.

What about “vase” the Americans say it the way it is spelled, we Brits say it with a “ar” sound like in Mars. In Indian my husband was taught to say “April” with the sound at the beginning of “Apple”, you can see how English can be confusing.

my students always say the word "work" as "walk". sometimes I think the mean "walk" instead of "work". it's really annoying me. but what I figured out they just can't pronounce the "or" sound in "work" that's why I recommend to say with "r" sound. it's better than "walk" but I hate it
