This is the most fascinating side of Chinese culture - also the side that I love. Dunhuang is a mixture of not only Buddhism, Hindu, Chinese Han cultures, but also received some influence from Turkic nations and some nomadic nations. It is such a melting pot, marking its importance in the Silk Road back in thousands of years. Btw, you can also talk about different minorities in China and their cultures like Dai, Zhuang...
@Luiri616 ай бұрын
I see Indians arguing in the comments section. This is because Dunhuang is located at the crossroads of the Silk Road, which coincides with the historical period when Buddhism was officially introduced to China. That's why Buddhist costumes appear on the murals. But Dunhuang culture was the result of exchanges between Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, economics, and the state. But in the thousands of years since, the cultural turnover at Dunhuang has long since changed. In China, Confucianism and Taoism have been deeply embedded for more than 2,000 years. They have dominated dynastic thought. Buddhism, on the contrary, went through several purges in ancient China, and could only be deeply bound to Confucianism and Taoism, and the three religions were united. Today 90% of the Chinese are atheists, and the Chinese still study Confucianism.

I highly recommend the game in case you're interested in Shinto culture or Japanese myth. Thanks again, Zoe, for making us smarter. Zàijiàn!

Once again it proves India has always been the central of civilisation. Influencing China, Thailand, Indonesia and the rest of Asia. Chinese may claim repeatedly 5000 years of history. Indian civilisation and history predates Chinese existence. And that is the truth. Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and various religions origin is India. Even martial arts that China sells as soft power is Indian. Brought to China by Indian monks as a way to defend themselves. Without India, much of the glory of ancient Chinese civilisation would not exist and that is a fact.

@princesadelareina3696 ай бұрын
@@kelzangdorji662 don't get mad at me. I am not saying that only Bharat is great. And if you call a reality a myth then you yourself are a myth and have no relevance at all. Ancient sages and monks from Bharat like Bodhidharma, influenced China a lot. Kalraipayattu is the mother of all martial arts which was also spread to China and Kung fu was born. Even Zen, Karate, etc. Meditation and yoga also originated from Bharat. And in ancient Bharat people didn't write much , they mentally remembered everything, literally every thing like millions of Shlokas from different texts. The system of writing things down (prevalently) began a lot later. And things were written on palms leaves or planks of rocks. Yes, paper was indeed present in ancient India, although it was different from the paper we use today. Ancient Indians used materials such as bark, palm leaves, and other plant fibers to write on. These materials were fashioned into scrolls or sheets and used for writing history , manuscripts, and other important documents. We have had many great doctors, philosophers, scientists, mathematicians, etc (even women,.not just men) in ancient Bharat. Ayurveda has many branches like Genetics, anatomy, pediatrics, etc too, since ancient times. We have an ancient text called Garbhopanishad which mentions all the details of the birth a child from a sperm and ovum to its development inside mother's womb with timeline and its parturition, which coincides perfectly with modern science. There are so many things, people don't know because we were invaded by the Mughals and the Europeans, who burnt down our school and universities and converted us and killed millions (including Buddhists, Sanatanis, Jains, Sikhs,etc), stopped us from reading our texts, and burnt them as well. Owr international universities like Nalanda University which was the world's first resendential uni, was burnt down by an invader, Bakhtiyar Khilji, and kept burning for more than a month, thousands of books were permanently gone. Students from all parts of the world including China, Greece, Japan, Europe, Middle East used to study there. Even the gatekeeper was as intelligent as a professor. Women were the vice chancellors like Loupmudra, Maitreyi, Gayatri, etc. Our sages, philosophers, scientists, mathematicians, astrologers, astronomers, biologist, etc of ancient times had calculated the distance between sun and earth, time for revolution of earth, moon, the galaxy, the solar system's working, they created yoga, dhyān (meditation) , art, dance, architecture, all the things and this even baffels modern scientists. Our temples, show such unique and mind blowing architecture, which none can explain. You can find one to be upside down, or carved from a single huge rock, over the ocean, etc and with highly detailed sculptures. Many show amazing things like producing music from pillars, a levitating pillar, levitating idols, a rock inside a lion's mouth made out of totally different rock than the lion, (ball can't be removed). This culture is so vast. All. I wanna say is that we love China, we love the world, especial Asia, it is our family. I am proud of your culture as much I am about mine. I just wanted to tell you the divine relationship between us since ancient times, not to prove superiority. On Earth, china is one of the most beautiful places , with beautiful culture and people, I love it. I love China, I love Asia, I love Bharat. Namaskar, may God bless you🕉️🌺🙏🏻☺️

@@princesadelareina369 Bharat indefinitely is a myth. It's not history. The largest recorded Indian empire is Muaryan empire which at its peak stretched from Bengal to Afghanistan and to Tamil Nadu. But even its peak didn't last more than 40 years. After Ashoka's conversion to Buddhism, Mauryan empire started to decline. Even at its peak, Muaryan empire didn't spread beyond Bengal & Afghanistan. I admit anything that is historical but Bharat? Sorry myths are myths. No, Kalaripayattu is not the mother of martial arts. Different civilizations had different martial arts thousands of years before something called Kalaripayattu even existed. Chinese martial arts had flourished long before anything Indian reached China. Chinese Shaui Jiao is at least 1000 years older than Kalaripayattu. The Egyptians, Mesopotamians, Greeks, Chinese, all had their own martial arts predating Kalaripayattu by thousands of years. All ancient civilizations had sophisticated knowledge on different fields of science, technology, medicine, astronomy, mathematics, architecture, biology, anatomy, astrology and so on. Many ancient civilizations had calculated the distance between Sun and earth, time for revolution of earth, the moon, the galaxy, solar system's working and etc which baffles modern scientists. For example, the ancient Greeks and Chinese even knew about Milky Way, Andromeda Galaxy etc. Chinese, Greeks, Mayans, etc could even predict eclipses accurately. Various ancient civilizations like Egyptians, Mayans & Chinese also developed calendars based on astronomical observations to track time, to plan agricultural activities and to schedule religious festivals. The Greeks, Romans, Chinese etc also observed the reproductive cycles of various organisms and wrote about topics such as fertilization and embryonic developments. Forms of meditation even existed in different civilizations. For example, ancient Chinese taoist practitioners taught how to meditate by harmonising body & soul. That happened before anything Indian reached China. The 22,000 km Great Walls Of China built 2000 years ago still stand firm today. The Pyramid of Giza still stand strong after braving all natural phenomena for 4600+ years. Just few examples that stand as testimony of ancient engineering, architecture & science. All other civilizations did what India did or the vice versa. All human civilizations have contributed equally for the advancement of human kind. Chinese paper making techniques reached India not later than 7th century. By 13 & 14th century, Chinese papers had virtually replaced the traditional Indian writing materials. Chinese papers were easy to make, easily available and affordable, hence revolutionizing the dissemination of knowledge. Oral traditions tho ancient are susceptible to distortion, omission, and loss over time. Details may be forgotten or altered with each retelling, leading to inaccuracies and the loss of valuable information. Other traditional writing materials were not easily available, not easily affordable and least convenient. Thus after arrival of Chinese papers, India did use it to produce thinkers, philosophers, mathematicians, scientists, doctors, engineers etc. Even today, schools, colleges, universities, hospitals, researches and so on continue to use Chinese papers. Guns, gun powder, bombs, rockets, missiles are all ancient Chinese inventions. I wonder how long India would be able to survive as a country today if it doesn't use those Chinese inventions. India's space exploration missions will also be not possible without rockets. Even rice originated from China & reached India. Today it's the most consumed food in India. Tea originated from China is the favorite drink of Indians. Noodles like maggie remain the favorite fast food in India. China did and continue to have a huge influence on India.

Its very similar to what we Hindus have been wearing since some 5k-6k years ago, as evident in our temple carvings, literature and frescoes as well. In fact, we still wear like this today, while doing our worship ceremonies. Saree, Antariya, Angvastra, lehenga/Ghagra are Hindu traditional clothes and Hindu women have worn flowers and gold/silver/bronze ornaments on hairdos and bodies along with Hindu men for aeons. Hindu men also customarily wear much gold, thankfully its getting a resurgence in the coming Hindu genz as we become aware of our ancestors and throw away our veils( the ones that extreme Northern Hindu women wear) into the gutter. No need to follow tribal backward culture which isn't ours. We traditionally never covered our heads at all, unlike rest cultures. It could be joint influence of Early Hinduism and Buddhism at best. We Hindus still follow the 16 traditional adornments of Hindu women and women, the ladies at dunhuang look like Apsaras who are Hindu celestial nymphs appropriated by Jain and then Buddhists some 2500 years ago.

In fact there have been many records of cross travelling and actually it was an Indian guru who introduced martial arts to China which is now known as kung fu.
@hvy8885 ай бұрын
Are you telling a joke? India didn't exist before 1947. Chinese monks who visited India taught Indians how to make paper and print. Chinese paper making and printing techniques have preserved a part of India's knowledge till today. Before India's independence in 1947, Indians didn't even like to record their history, a change of colonizers led to a change of civilization, the Indian civilization you are talking about is broken and incomplete, without enough artifacts to prove it. What you said about the influence of Indian civilization on China, this influence is very small. Buddhism? India is now predominantly Hindu and there is still Buddhism? Martial arts was a skill of some Chinese long before Buddhism. Without Chinese history books, Indians don't even know what countries once existed on the Indian continent.
@hvy8885 ай бұрын
The reason you see Chinese Kung Fu being demonstrated today, often by Buddhist monks from the Shaolin Temple, is that China stored a great deal of its martial arts secrets and many medical and philosophical books during the war years at the Shaolin Temple, which was located in the middle of the interior of China, in the province of Henan, which all the dynastic rulers were bound to respect, and which was the heart of China, and which is why later on the Chinese said that “martial arts came out of Shaolin”, but it did not mean that Kung Fu was created by the Shaolin Buddhists. This is why the Chinese later said that “martial arts came from Shaolin”, but not in the sense that kung fu was created by Shaolin Buddhists, but rather that it was preserved by the Shaolin Temple. It is also clear from this that the Indians' knowledge of history is so weak.
@hvy8885 ай бұрын
I'm Chinese, so if I wanted to, I could find tons of history books recording the history of India, and some stories of what the Chinese saw after they arrived on the Indian continent thousands of years ago. But you Indians can never find a complete record of your own, only some religious sites and some rumors, and only a few written records. Because before 1947, there had been several or dozens of countries on the Indian continent, which had been ruled by invaders but which had never united the whole of India. And you Indians can't tell the history of the Indian continent and the various religions. History is serious and you can be proud of your culture but you cannot make up history. China and India have definitely exchanged ideas over thousands of years, but definitely not in the influential way you claim.

I have also visited in Shanghai China and I amaze and still speechless on how freaking BIG it is compare to Australia, so much great infrastructure, technology engineering is way ahead to Australia if im being honest lol. I have also visited the great wall of China, but I have not visited the whole China in the country side or anywhere else because China is such a big country. One day if ever come back to China I would for sure visit "Dunhuang Culture" in China, there so much to see in planet earth. I have also recently graduated my undergrad this year and though I am university educated, I do not know everything in life and I am learning new things everyday! This is the region most important to Chinese Buddhism, being the birthplace of Mahayana and Tantric Buddhism. Gandharans were the ones who spread Buddhism in East and Central Asia. A big part of the influence on Dunhuang is Gandharan art. Gandharans are the people who actually created the first statues (iconography) of Buddha; Buddhism before this was aniconic. Gandharan art itself is a blend of Hellenic and indigenous pakistani art styles, and Dunhuang seems like a perfect blend of Gandharan and indigenous Chinese art. Kizil caves in Xinjiang is another example of Gandharan art in China; you'll see that sculptures there have surprisingly European-looking faces. Absolutely beautiful! As a person interested in both Gandharan and Chinese art, this place is absolutely heaven for me. Love from Pakistan ❤🇵🇰

I mean, we all know how Indians are. Is there anything they haven't claimed yet?

OMG, that's exactly what came to my mind! Zoe mentioned the influence of Central Asian Buddhism on Dunhuang. Buddhism in Central Asia was Gandharan. Just a few weeks ago, I visited the Peshawar Museum and was absolutely mesmerized by those sculptures of Bodhisattvas. Gandharan art is the best of any other art forms of Ancient Pakistan (my opinion).

@@FarhadHocane Yep, Central Asian Buddhism was Gandharan. But Dunhuang is unique as it has much more Chinese influence. Gandharan and Chinese art are two that I am obsessed with. I would love to visit the Peshawar museum, ngl. It has the largest Gandharan collection ❤
