@@llamasugar5478 politics in a nutshell: The right: "You are a terrible person, buy our product (you'll like it, be worse(good), the world will fix itself)" The left: "You are a terrible person, buy our product (you will become a better, healthier person, if we fix the world together)" The paradox is that, the better a politician does their job, the less you hear of them. Because either it will not change the status quo, or because it will be changed so fast that no one notices, leaving no food for reporters, or because it is a desk job not worth reporting, even when it's the most important work, hiding in plain sight.

When my daughter was little someone gave her a Barbie that was from an around-the-world type collection. It was an Indian Barbie (like, from India, not Native American LOL) and had a beautiful dress and a long black braid. On the Barbie commercial: Back then, there were no "Girl Bosses". Girls were expected to get married, make a home, and be a Mom. You were also spot on when you mentioned the reason women HAD to go to work was government taxation. I think that most women even today would rather be able to stay home and raise their children without Daycare, babysitters, etc. As an aside, several years back, my ex-sister, (don't ask), was thinking about quitting her job, so we were discussing the finances of it. By the time we accounted for the cost of transportation, work clothing, (office professional), daycare for her son, etc., we figured that she would lose about $50 a week by not working. And if you want a REAL laugh, ala the expectations of women in the 50s, look up "The Good Wife's Guide". You could make a whole vid just dissecting it.

I love your comments and fun smile. You have a great deal of energy that comes across so well. On the other hand, I am an old guy and grew up with and remember all of these commercials on TV. Very few people were offended by them. Some were considered (like the Jello) tacky or in bad taste, but no one started a riot over them. Barbie was for little girls (G.I. Joe came out later for little boys, but the leftists considered that too war like and said "boys shouldn't play with dolls" anyway. Unlike dolls at the time, Barbie was more realistic (and away from the "cuddling" and feeding aspect of dolls of the time. I never saw the commercial for Swing Wing and none of my friends had one. It probably didn't last long since it was "dorky" then and is "dorky" now. The cola companies had artificial chemicals added instead of real sugar because you could store it longer. Real sugar was seldom used in cola drinks during the 1970's-2010"s because it was more costly (Corn syrup is used now). Let's ignore the fact that artificial ingredients are damaging to the body . "Body shaming" is a fact of life. Until the late 1800's, most men preferred a woman who was "pleasingly plump" because it was considered healthy. Today the slimmer body is preferred and is healthier. Too much sugar is NOT the problem. To little activity is. Some people avoid sugar because it makes them "fat". Not true, sugar is a fast burning carbohydrate that will disappear fairly soon when you minimize it. The real problem is the "heavy " carbohydrates that turn into fat (a form of stored energy) that stays with the body unless it is burned off by activity. Today, kids sit on their butt all day long and don't exercise, walk or play sports. The ones who do are usually slimmer (depending on a persons biology). ...Just saying.

See, I think there's been some major retconning as to the original intent of the Barbie doll. I was born in the early 70's and I grew up playing with both baby dolls and Barbie dolls. When I was a child, Barbie was always viewed as a FASHION doll, not a "girl boss" doll. The whole point of Barbie was that you could have endless choices for her clothes, shoes, and jewelry. I sewed tons of clothes and hats for my slew of Barbie dolls, and mixed and matched outfits for all of them all the time. Dressing Barbie was a fun way of putting together different outfits and getting a feel for what works together and what doesn't. The lesson my friends and I learned from Barbie was that you could still be fashionable even as a more mature woman. The thought that Barbie was supposed to represent some kind of career woman vs a housewife/mother never even entered my mind until it started being shoved down our throats very recently, tbh.

The Jello commercial reminded me of 2 other commercials, both from the 70s. 1) Was for Tide or another detergent, a Chinese man does laundry, and the suburban White housewife says "How do you get the clothes so clean?" and he says "Ancient Chinese secret". In the end she finds out he's using Tide or whatever and smirks. 2) Was either a beer or NFL commercial, I forget which, because it had famous coaches and football players drinking beer and playing cards. They ask their Japanese friend if he wants to cut the cards, he karate chops the whole table. Swing wing. I mean, what's different from that commercial, and "I whip my hair back and forth"? Enjoli. I remember that commercial as a teen, it was supposed to be very "empowering" at the time. I watched a video once, which lead to a rabbit hole of sorts, of banned commercials. These were far more modern commercials, the two I think were most memorable: A German eyeglass commercial, husband and wife are in the car, and wife wants to give a nice surprise to the husband. Accidentally "goes down" on the gearshift, because she needs glasses. The other was for Skittles, Newlyweds are having simulated relations, and the groom says "Oh, here it comes" and then Skittles pour over the bride. The end line was "Taste the rainbow".

That perfume commercial was awesome. I mean, at the end the Husband even said, "I'm going to cook for the Kids, tonight." Like, that's awesome. Teamwork, swapping roles, sharing in responsibility. @johns9652
@johns9652 9 ай бұрын
@@fredhughes4115 It is my opinion, that the connotation of the commercial was, you can be a girlboss, but such a damn good girlboss, that the husband would tell you to kick off the high heels and rest your feet, while he did the chores, just because you are so damn awesome and he loved you. Even though he also had a job. Maybe I'm just a romantic. Society pits us against each other, and there are certain roles that are traditionally enforced. Once, my wife complained that I didn't help out enough with dishes and such. I said OK honey, I hear you. I will do the dishes more often. That's going to take time away from my other chores though, what day would you like to mow the lawn? "I'm not mowing no damn lawn!! That's your job!" Fair enough, darling. I'm not washing no damn dishes either.

We do not have an obesity epidemic today because of old Coca-Cola. Back in the 60s and 70s, the individual serving size of a Coke was 6 ounces, which is what you would buy from a vending machine. (And Brett's right about the sugar, too: real cane sugar.) In the 70s we also got started with the 12 oz can and later progressed to today's 16 oz and 20 oz bottles. Super-size servings of everything is what makes us fat.

Well to give them credit, the life expectancy back then was like 70. It's 78 now, but still....and back then people didn't infantalize young adults like we do now. We outsourced our manufacturing & things just went downhill from there. Then you have the start of federally backed student loans that you can't bankrupt out of & the push for people to go to college, therefore flooding the employee market with college grads, making a bachelor's degree equal to what a HS Diploma was back then & a masters degree is now what sets folks apart. Since the college degree is "required" it makes young adults more dependent on their parents for longer & they can't afford to start their own life. MIx that in with inflation etc., and I can see why they implied that it was "old." Because back then, it was-ish. People got married around 20-21 back then.

Her aunt was still working part time at age 90. Young people naturally think that people ten or fifteen years older than them are 'old', but thinking that a 30 year old is ancient is a bit ignorant. How many gas station attendants do you see in 2023? If a teacher told their students “working drive thru at McDonald’s is an acceptable career path”, I’d be angry. And jobs such as those pay low wages, so they can’t care for themselves much less family.
