Fasting is an essential part of the human experience and will not kill a child. I had one to two meals a day for much of my childhood and from time to time went without food for twenty-four hours at a stretch. In fact, I still eat like this and am in excellent health. Further, Muslims spend an entire month fasting during daylight hours and there are around two billion of them. If you truly thought that this was an issue, then you'd be working overtime to prosecute Muslims who ask their children to observe Ramadan. However, that would never occur to you because the "life necessities" of a Muslim would never cross your mind, and because you know full well that missing a meal is no big deal.

As an aunt myself, it is so, so very hard to do anything (legally) to protect kids from emotional and mental abuse. Believe me! So, we try to foster a loving and caring environment for the kids, so that when they can break free, they have someone to turn to. It is hard to explain unless you have been or are in that type of situation. There is very little that can be done when emotional and mental abuse is taking place because it can't be "proven". There was a real concern by viewers & neighbors that eventually there would be a kid leaving that house in a body bag. Losing dinner as a punishment really hits home for me. As a kid my birth mother weaponized custody against my father, and if I didn't lie and say something that my dad did that my birth mom could tell the social workers, then I wouldn't be allowed to eat. This was so traumatizing as a child ( I was around 5-6 years old at this time) that I blocked it out and only remembered this happened because I saw the court documents many years later as an adult. This is a genuine question from a mom struggling with a picky eater: How do you approach the situation where a child won't eat what is served and demands something else? I'll accommodate up to a point, but I also don't want my kids treating my husband and I like their personal chefs. Food is expensive and I'm trying to prevent as much wasted food as possible. they don't WANT to eat their vegetables no matter what. So, my husband I will straight up tell them, "This is dinner. You do not have to eat it; I won't force feed you. But THIS. IS. DINNER. Nothing else will be offered. Eat it, or go hungry." Of course, there is also "Leftover Night", when the kids can choose any of the leftovers we have on hand, but realistically, they can usually ask for any of the leftovers of other meals on any night and will be allowed to do that. There's also plenty of occasions where the littlest one will say he doesn't want a particular meal, but then he DOES want it as soon as his older brother gets served, but then he DOESN'T want it again and I'm not going back and forth with him over and over again. He needs to learn to say what he really wants and be held to it.

@@GenXfrom75 Hey thanks for the reply! We do keep their preferences in mind (chicken nuggets are on the menu at least once a week and my husband makes pizza on the weekends). I go back and forth about snacks... Snacks were NOT allowed when I was growing up; you ate at meal times and that was IT. I've often wondered if I wouldn't have been so very skinny as a kid/teenager if I'd been allowed to eat when I was hungry. But I also want my own kids to eat a full and proper meal at meal time, so they aren't allowed any snacks within an hour before meals. They also usually won't get dessert (on those days when dessert is an option) if they say they are full before finishing a meal, though some exceptions are made at times for various reasons. That rule is just to prevent them from saying they are full when really they don't want what is served, but they absolutely want dessert. I'll look up some "hidden veggie" recipes and give 'em a go!

Her husband hasn’t been arrested. He claims he had no clue about it as they split up late last year. He’s been photographed at their house with a pillow and KZbin removing the KZbin logo off the van. But he was also apart of it once upon a time, so I don’t feel he’s safe for the kids either.

What’s even more of a “red flag” is she has so many nut job women followers. Then when she went down they pretended that they didn’t give her a platform. Conclusion: Don’t entertain women grasping at straws for clout of social media.

My parents were strict too but at the end of the day they would remind me that they trusted me and supported me no matter what happened with a loving smile on their faces. I knew that they just wanted me to do my best and this effort helped me earn an amazing life. On the other hand what this woman did is absolute monstrosity. Poor kids.

I feel bad for all these kids who are thrust into their parents' "vlogging channel". As a guy with 8 siblings myself, growing up, everyone I met always said, "OMG you guys are just like the Duggars!" It always ticked me off. Thankfully, my parents are cool and never did anything like this.

I hadn't heard about his yet. One of the best videos you've ever done. Thank you, Brett, for using your online presence as a force for good. These children deserved so much better, and it's likely, from my own point of view and experience as a mental health professional, that only the youngest girl has any hope of developing a mostly stable mental health when she reaches adulthood. It's pathetic that no one listened to the oldest daughter until the arrests happened, and that only because the very visible signs of physical abuse on the boy that escaped couldn't be ignored. The police force and CPS of their area should be held publicly accountable. The oldest daughter's perseverance, and quick thinking is crowd sourcing evidence, are both extraordinary. Her outside of the box thinking would be an incredible asset to the FBI departments that work to protect children. A career path I hope she considers.

Withholding “dinner privileges” should’ve been when CPS showed up. Broadcasting starving children as “punishment” is not discipline, but abuse.

Ruby Franke deserves everything coming to her, and I hope the husband gets some bits of justice handed to him for enabling it.
