This show has remained rent free in my head for so long. I absolutely adored both seasons, but for two very seperate reasons. Season 1 was an experience with body dismorphoa and EDs that really hit home at that time of my life. Season 2 was an unhinged mess that I ate up and desperately needed a conclusion to.

i am fat. i am fine with Debbie Ryan in a fat suit. I can understand why people are upset about the fat suit, but the point wasn’t FAT PEOPLE FUNNY HAHAHAHAHA it was that when she lost weight, she was still miserable. It would have been impossible to have a character who lost weight and still have flashbacks unless they either did this or they found identical twins where one lost weight and one gained weight who both act well. This was just what needed to be done for the story. It was a good story.
@chronosunflower129

Seriously this! My thought process was: which is more ethical? Hiring a fat actor then forcing them to lose so much weight to fit into the “beauty standard” or putting an actor in a fat suit for the flashbacks then using them for the role as intended? The latter implies less suffering for the actor who takes on the main role

As a bigger girl who was bullied pretty bad for my weight through out middle school(i was in 8th grade when the show came out) this show really healed me in a way not only did it make me aware to my binge eating but it also made me realize that being skinny wouldn't make me feel better cause either way i hated life and i hated myself. "Patty does a lot of stupid 💩, that's the main point of the show..." Thank you Becky! I think a lot of the hate came from people not understanding the concept of a villain protagonist (look at how many people think Walter White is the hero of Breaking Bad) 🙃 Patty is broken from years of bullying and self-loathing, but instead of going to therapy she makes her issues everyone else's problem. She can't reconcile her trauma and hurts those around her in the process of trying to self actualize (I think this is where trying to sleep with Bob came in). While they could have done some things more tastefully, I really can't fault a show about flawed people having flaws of its own 😅
@anon35423
@anon35423 17 күн бұрын
well said! I also agree and think the hate was a mix of people not understanding she's supposed to be a flawed character and also people just being angry at the fat suit, but the point of the show is seeing she's flawed and going through the journey with her as she tries to change and struggles to! I wish more shows wouldn't be scared to make their main characters more flawed like this!

The show takes a very smart take with her weigth loss, since she never got skinny because she worked her issues, it was just because she literally couldn't eat for 3 months, so she has a skinny body, but her brain is still "fat". Shows the danger of not working the root of your problems

I think the moment with Patty outing Bob was done perfectly! This is the peak moment of that season of Patty's selfishness and the most vile thing she has done to someone thus far, with then Bob exposing her for being a bad person, to then that dark binge eating scene. We hadn't seen Patty binge eat the whole season and only got hints that she was doing this before, but pairing this moment with Patty doing the worst thing she's done so far was the best way to show how her self hatred is what leads to her doing that.

An underrated moment of the show was the drama between Bob, his wife and neighbor. The struggle of a closeted man who wants to live his life as a gay person, but also deeply loves his wife and does not want to leave her. Love is multidimensional and is not reserved for one person, and sexuality is a spectrum. The moment they all got together, was very moving and heartwarming for me.

The show is called “ Insatiable”. Trying to satisfy oneself but never being able to quench that desire. You see that with the food. Then with working out. Obsessing over weight. Obsessing over people’s expectations or perception of her. You see many ways she tries to satiate yourself. Just like once she kills once she starts to do it over and over. IF the show was better they could have absolutely created it into the making of a serial killer or hit man. How trying to satiate a hungry in you and exploring all these routes in search of it. I haven’t actually watched it. But I could see the concept being successful if done correctly.

i agree with you completely, and i just want to also say, i think this show was the first time i've seen a show touch on EDs from the binging side of things. Most times if a character in a piece of media has an ED the go tos seem to be anorexia or bulimia (which dont get me wrong, are horrible and need attention too) but people seem to not really give a fuck or have any sort of sympathy or understanding if you are fat and have an ED. As someone who still struggles with binge eating and has since childhood, as weird and unserious as this show was, it definitely made me feel seen in a way i havent really experienced before with a show or movie regarding this topic. Also, just wanted to say I'm really glad that you're doing better as far as having a healthier relationship with food :)

One time I was watching this show when my mom walked into the room, at the exact moment Patty is doing that monologue in the hospital, and she calls herself “Fatty Patty” and my mom started crying and sat down with me to watch the rest of the episode. My mom’s name is Patricia and when she was a kid she was bullied for being overweight and poor. The kids used to call her Fatty Patty too. We loved this show, and bonded over it after that moment but we never talked about her crying at that scene. I think she really resonated with Patty for their similar childhood, and I bonded with Patty due to my restrictive eating disorder. This show really captured the way a lot of women deal with body dysmorphia. I felt scene when I watched it and I wish that it didn’t get cancelled. It got crazy in the second season but the underlying core was always strong from the get go.

Honestly, if there was a similar concept for a show but about a man, especially if it starred someone like Jonah Hill, it wouldn't get nearly as much backlash for being crude or offensive, and a lot of more people would just accept it as satire. It's just that anything with a female protagonist is put under a microscope and subjected to far more scrutiny, from all sides, men and women.

The backlash from people who thought the show was bad because "Patty is a bad role model" when it was clear that the show was very critical of Patty and made it obvious to the viewers that we aren't supposed to think she's a good person was a perfect example of why media literacy is important. The same goes for those who insisted the show was supporting bigotry, unrealistic body expectations, grooming (like when Patty had a crush on Bob in the beginning), biphobia, murder, etc. because of dark humor jokes or characters being unlikable, when it was very clear that the show was condemning these things. I'm not saying that *everyone* who didn't like the show just misunderstood it, of course. Some people might've hated watching it or were uninterested in it for other more valid reasons. Even I can admit that the show had flaws and that some people did have valid criticisms about. Plus, different people prefer different things, just because, and that's okay. But it seemed that most of the backlash that the show got stemmed from people being mad that Patty was unlikable or people thinking the show was "bigoted", as if they think that the people who made the show think that the bad things characters did or said in the show were okay, what that clearly wasn't the case.

As someone who quit the show mid-season but eventually finished it, the reason i didn’t like it is the writing. Literally the first episode, it’s all fat, fart or poop jokes. I used to love this show 5 years ago when I was also in the middle of an ED. Binge eating gets overlooked a lot and the cool thing about this show is that they didn’t shy away from showing the ugly side of it. Even if it went full dexter in s2, it’s campy and obviously not realistic so you could make a case of it all representing the turmoil in patty’s mind caused by the ED, like even if you’re not an accidental serial killer you can relate to her anxiety and obsession. There’s a lot of powerful scenes like the cake, patty being in denial, the overexercising, the execution at times it’s not the best but it was so real, unapologetic and different from everything else at the time, while being relatable and showing how the ED messes with your reality. Overall I liked it a lot and I was so sad there was no season 3, i really hope it pulls a Jennifer’s body and become a cult series in a decade

I have BPD and struggle with very simillar issues to Patty. I relate to the most part of the (serious, killer aside part) storyline actually. And I just have to say, that her wanting to sleep with Bob made alot of sense to me. The obsession with the first man that noticed her when she first deemed herself beautiful is a very realistic thing for someone in that state of mind. And it being a much older man even more so. With Bob instantly being a sort of protector and a father figure while Patty never had one, the sexual or romantic obsession follows a sadly very common pattern. It was overplayed and kinda not taken seriously enough most of the time, yes. But I think it was very important to paint her obsessive nature and disordered upbringing, that often leads yong people with issues to confuse their own views on platonic/parental and romantic/sexual love and attachements.

I’m glad they let me see it for myself. this show (specifically the episode where she explains what happens when she binges, the pastries with soap episode) is what helped me realize that i had an eating problem. my entire life i knew i had a problem with food, having to go on diets ever since i could open the fridge by myself, but i always thought it was WHAT i ate not HOW MUCH i ate. this show made me cry so many times because of how much i related. the bikini scene, the cake scene, the scene where her dress wont fit anymore because she gained some weight back. Loved the show! The killer turn was one that truly shocked me though lol! Also, recently lost a lot of weight over the past year (due to side effect of meds) and first watched the show last summer. As someone who is being✨perceived✨ more with a smaller body is a lot to handle: I still have the rage, I have confusion of the attention, still have body dysmorphia and a bad relationship with food. Not surprised the character became a killer. Watching Fannita’s social media persona change with her body transformation has a lot of parallels to Debby Ryan’s character. You get a thinner body, but [the complexities of] life goes on, whilst telling it as an over the top dark comedy story, yes pls

i get why you wouldn't love the killer plotline, but i actually disagree to the whole "it should have been like "you" argument because what i loved was the show sort of expressing how most teenage girls, especially ones who have been through *shit* like patty have these pretty twisted reactions/fantasies and i absolutely love how it keeps trying to show us how patty keeps trying to gaslight herself and justify all the stuff she did and have the whole "i can't be a bad person because i felt guilty after doing all that" mentality, but she slowly stops believing that. i would have loved to see her sort of very miserably accept her fate of just being innately horrible (but then somehow have it end happily because i HATE unhappy endings) in s3. i do agree that the show lost sight of what they were doing in s1 but i enjoyed the new direction the took in s2. although i do agree the "i-killed-3-drug-cartel-guys-with-my-sick-dance-skills" is very much twisted disney channel but i kinda love that for patty.

I don't really get the madness about the fatsuit. It's necessary with how the story of the series goes, it's just not realistic without one. And can you imagine the oitrage if they had cast someone plus-sized and then had them loose a ton of weight

I'm so glad people are finally talking about how this show was so misunderstood... it was ahead of its time and people were too quick to judge it just by the trailer alone. I thought it was a brilliant dark comedy! I absolutely LOVED how it showed that losing the weight did not make her life automatically better, she was still miserable. There were still so much internal issues to fix omg, Patty was a terrible person but at the same time she has been through so much.

I remember the trailer for the show going viral due to being branded as "fatphobic". However, once I watched this show with a friend who actually enjoyed the show, I realised that the show itself wasn't quite my taste. However I did appreciate that the show appeals to those who enjoy more darker, raunchier comedy. I also quite liked watching Dallas Roberts on this show😁.

30:44 actually yes, it did imo bc people go through that. It's ugly and people don't want to see that, but it really is another symptom of her trauma and I think it was important for the people who know what that experience is like. She romanticizes bob in every way, because she needed/wanted things that she thought she was unattained to and decided to seek it out that way because in her traumatized logic, it was a chance. Bob made her feel more confidence and constantly built her up, she mixed that with her romantic idealism because of a lot of factors and it's complex stuff, but yeah I think it's nuanced and important.

The plot of patty wanting to sleep with bob is due to her father issues..her dad is never mentioned and her mother is barely around but do you know who is bob. She’s surrounded by this fatherly like love something she was missing from her childhood and her brain is twisting it and taking it for romantic interest. It’s common enough for people to seek what they may have lacked in childhood in adulthood particularly in romantic relationships. Brick could be processing similar feelings to patty but with his mother and that’s why he slept with the Dolly Parton wannabe

I relate to her character as a girl who grew up as the “fat loser” who was bullied callously everyday for my looks then eventually became more conventionally attractive by losing weight. I really relate to the feeling that comes with “finally being pretty” but still being stuck on the past and how I was treated and I relate to her struggles with self image, inner rage, selfishness, and low self esteem due to those past experiences even though it’s been 11 years since I left school and I should really let go. I can see where they were trying to go with the show but I think they didn’t know which plot line they wanted to go with or they just made it so they wasn’t able to seamlessly merge the two plots. They should have focused on her overcoming her anger and binge eating like the first season or just forgot the first season storyline, gone full revenge killer, using her new looks as leverage for manipulation and made the show more darker.

This show was a wild ride with a lot going on but it really had so much to say I wish it got another chance to continue on. Patty got what she wanted she got skinny but she still struggles with self loathing. The scene of her crying in the dressing room because she couldn’t stand her body in a swimsuit was way too relatable. Bob struggling to keep his sexuality hidden and the love he has for his wife. Pattys love interest, (Bobs son I think I forgot his name ) who would be seen as perfect has his own struggles and I think it would be super interesting to dive into the pressure he would be under for school, sports and relationships etc

I don't see why people that haven't even watched the show feel comfortable in sharing their views on it. I was that girl in school, in the 1990s and 2000s. I know there are stereotypical exaggerated scenes and I'm not oblivious to that. However, it's not far from the truth for so many people. Anyway, I was the "fatty" and loved the show even if it hurt sometimes due to some very relatable scenes.

part of me gets it why it got backlash, but the other part of me is like, so did y'all want a thin actress to actually gain a bunch of weight and then lose it so she can play the same role just so people can complain about how "hard" they are working her or the "damage" they are doing to her body . how else did they want the story of a fat person losing weight to go? because if they would have hurt an actual plus size actress to play the before patty, people would have complained that they "used her as a joke"

i seen some arguments getting angry about the fat suit saying why did they cast a skinny girl, they should have casted an actual plus sized actress and help them lose weight to film the skinny scenes. I get where they're coming from but that is just so unhealthy and would be SO expensive to keep filming going that long. Most of the people getting angry about the fat suit weren't even fat themselves LOL. I've been overweight my entire life and i have never EVER had issues with movies or shows like this. People are going way overboard with the advocating & cancelling nowadays it's ridiculous.

Audience want to see a nice fat person who gets thin, but it's unrealistic to assume that a fat person who gets thin becomes a perfect thin individual. There is a lot of resentment in the journey, people treat you differently, among other things. It takes a long time to lose weight and maintain the loss... there is so much

I can appreciate how this show had the balls to make the point that changing your appearance doesn't solve all of your problems. Even if you manage to lose a bunch of weight or exercise until you have your dream bod, it can all be for naught if your mindset doesn't change with your body. Patty had an inherent belief that being skinny would solve all of problems, not realizing that making that kind of change would require her to challenge her own self-image. She never does, however, and she stays the same miserable person despite having the appearance she's always desired to have.

Watched this show, loved this show, sad it got cancelled. My reaction wasn’t offense - this is a DARK COMEDY and they did it sooo well. Also, that swimsuit scene was intense - I’ve been there, my mom comforting me and completely confused as she didn’t see what I was seeing. My body dysmorphia is the same, but I’ve chosen to not look at my body in the mirror as much and I try not let it get in the way of things I want to do in life.

As someone who was "the fat girl" in school, the bullying in this show is unfortunately accurate. I lived in a toxic and borderline abusive home, which led me to develop binge eating at an early age in order to cope. People would literally yell "fat pig" at my face repeatedly, tell me I looked pregnant, tackle me, laugh at me in gym class, openly ridicule me, etc. I was treated as less than human and outright ignored by my peers for most of my childhood and early teen years. I eventually developed bulimic tendencies and lost over 50 pounds, but despite my smaller size I'm still incredibly insecure. The emotional scars left by the bullying I endured will stay with me forever. Also, this happened in 2018-2022 and is very much still an issue today. Please be kind people, you never know what someone is actually struggling with. ://

I love everything about this video you shared. This show was sooooo underated and misunderstood and you did an excellent job discussing every single point needed to get that point across. The ending still irritates the ever living.... out of me. The show shows the contradictory side of life and how just because someone is pretty, we should not put them on a high pedestal, as Patty had gotten to be but we see all of the things she has done, as viewers, behind the scenes that those characters on the show who worshiped and supported her, did not. Kind of like a looking glass into the real world and how we view celebrities/"beautiful" people pushed into the spotlight. Very well done, you earned a new subscriber :) Looking forward to new content.

Thank you for providing such a nuanced approach to this show. I think season 1 was absolutely the strongest season and the best. I wish more shows weren't as afraid to show eating disorders so realistically and crudely and messy because that is what and how they are for some of us. Sometimes the triggers don't make sense or it seems stupid on the outside looking in, but when you are in that space when you have an eating disorder rationale just doesn't exist to be honest no matter how self aware you are. I do think it got really silly at the end, I think they were trying to keep it from being too too serious since it was meant to be a dark comedy at the end, so it makes sense it would get outlandish so it is sometimes darkly humorous? While I would love a show that could long term show the struggles of an eating disorder through the stages of denial, acceptance and then maybe recovery/ tragic end of not recovering, it wouldn't be a dark comedy anymore it would just be a realistic and more psychological show. So the tone would absolutely shift drastically probably even more. But the fact that even those moments (that were protrayed so well) got so much backlash as "promoting" or a "bad representation" or whatever, shows that the world just would not be accepting or ready for such a serious show. It sucks. I wish this show could have done more with that plot rather than the psycho killer side lol.
