If you get one tight bolt, putting the adjacent bolts back in & torquing them can sometimes take a small amount of load off the tight one & enable it to be removed.

I once saw a Suzuki Wagon R that had done 90,000 miles without an oil change and the lady owner was quite proud of it only topping the oil up when the warning light came on,she wanted me to service it before MOT,it had never had a service from new,everything I looked at was knackered,the brake discs were nearly worn away because new pads had never been fitted or looked at,I told the lady I wouldn’t touch the vehicle because of the state it was in and told her to take it somewhere else. It was its first MOT and needed a lot of money spent on it to make it roadworthy,looking into the oil filler cap it looked like it was running on black pudding and was rattling like a tin of dried peas,no way was i getting involved with that vehicle.

I had an ABS light showing up last year, didn't bother with a garage. I stated with the simplest problem first, and worked my way along. Wasn't the fuses, it was a sensor on a rear hub. Replaced it for 12 quid, job done!

Had a car with ABS light on , turned out to be a sensor. Current car has air bag warning light on, there's a jumble of wires under passenger seat, give that a wiggle, light goes off. Really annoying how many problems are the warning device, and not the component itself.

Yeah ABS sensors are a common fault, even just cleaning them can work sometimes. The rear ones on my Passat are a nightmare though, can't see them at all, right on the back of the hub, you gotta feel your way out, like a bind man at an orgy.

Wrap some insulation tape around a socket, from the tape roll. Then wrap the repair from that. This makes it easier to wrap the tape around the repair when space is tight like here.

MOT tester here, bear in mind you can take the wheel, hub cap etc off to inspect, you can't during an MOT test, it can be near impossible to see the pad in its carrier, and when you can, judging minimum 1.5mm thickness is tricky. No excuse if there is obvious metal to metal though, that's just sloppy...

I was thinking the same. I was told MOT cannot take the wheel off so that means you cannot judge pad thickness. Only real test is the braking test but it does not tell you proximity to brake failure. Nice video content ...

I don't agree with your comments. You can clearly see the brake pads through the alloy wheels. No excuses, just sloppy testing. I bought a car recently where the previous tester advised the brake pads were low, and 6 months later, it was re-tested with no mention. Sloppy and lazy testing.

Kwik fit told my mate they could replace exhaust on his land cruiser...cut it off then found out they couldn't,so he went to specialist stainless job, luckily he got back to thick fit before they lost or threw out the flange he needed

Great work Guy's.. You're the real deal. I was in the tyre fitting business for a few years and remember a few massively over torqued car wheel nuts .. I had to jerry-rig some of our commercial tools to get the nuts free. Halfords (and a few others), need to tell their fitters that you only use an air wrench to lightly tighten and then torque up using a calibrated manual torque wrench, especially with alloys.

This all looks so familiar. I've been fixing my cars on the drive for 35 years. Weather is a pain. Lack of a lift is a pain. For using a breaker bar on stubborn bolts work downwards, not upwards, and support the head end with a jack so it doesn't twist off, rounding things more. You can jump on the bar too which helps. Always good to see someone who actually cares. Full marks.

I recently had am MOT by Halford, and in my minor advisory was Inner tie rods, I Put the car on stands in my garage and took a look and seems fine, but took it to my local and he said there nothing wrong with your car.. I think it was Halford hoping I would say go ahead with the work, as my MOT cost 28 quid. Same with Kwik fit, saying they had put special air in my tyres and added 2 quid a tyre, Told they where to do, air is air end off. so I do what I can on my car. just wish there was someone like you in my area, honest and knows his stuff. Keep up the good work. there are people out there who are looking for an honest mechanics.

27.15 had my nut and wheel lock key over torqued ( formula 1) took it to a local garage and the amount of force they had to use to get the things off was mad. These garages arent using the right torque specs for certain cars. Ridiculous and becoming a common problem. Big up for the vids man. Regarding the MOT: Brakes are the most safety-critical components of all, and they must work properly to pass the MOT (hence why you put your car in for a service and MOT at the same time). Can’t believe those breaks the driver must of known for a long time before it went for a MOT, I’m always sceptical when someone just puts their car in for a MOT Great knowledge, your a clever lad and all the best 👍

Great video, quick tip. To wrap wires with electrical tape you will find it easier to first wrap the tape around a 10mm socket then around your wires. You will gain more clearance and a more professional appearance.

Yeh my A/C wasn't working, so i asked a local mechanic and he told me he would have to replace the whole alternator. Did a bit of research online and someone on You Tube mentioned the relay so I replaced it for £15 quid and my A/C was working, that's 1% the cost of what he quoted me.

As someone who has done my fair share of soldier/splice repairs in the field, I would recommend a butane torch/iron with the reflector. It's too easy to not notice other damage being done with a 'naked' flame. We were issued an old Weller Pyropen, not the best iron by a long shot but def the best for heat shrink.

A tip for you when your wrapping 1 wire that is in amongst a bundle of others get a 10mm socket and wrap it in electrical tape and then use that as a little roll of electrical tape. The reason that RangeRover stopped running away will be because it blew them 3 injectors out and only had one sealed cylinder left to create compression. As for stuck wheel bolts you want to keep a ¾" power bar in your van that's what I use on VW/Audi rear hub bearing bolts.

I’m not a pro but have worked on my own vehicles since I started driving 25 years ago. Generally good work well done, nice to see an honest mechanic, I don’t trust chains or dealerships for the reasons you’ve highlighted. You do need to brush up on skills to release a seized bolt - was a real shame to see the alloy damaged. I do suspect it could have been cross-threaded. As someone already mentioned the first thing is you should always crack wheel bolts with the car on the ground. Second you could do with a high pressure compressor in the van and air driven impact driver - battery powered are ok but not up to the toughest jobs. When applying heat to release a seized bolt you need to get the bolt red hot, then let it cool off a bit (stops glowing), then try to crack it. If in a safety critical area the bolt should also be replaced afterwards as the heat could weaken it. The way you were using the torch - you had the coolest part of the flame on the bolt so it wouldn’t have been heated enough - also shame to use fire and damage the alloy. Consider having an induction based bolt heater in the van. I’ve seen one race shop use some sort of adapted welder to heat seized bolts red hot in seconds, very effective and can be used in areas where a torch would be too dangerous.

26:28 That job reminded me of the last time I had a flat tire. Came out from work, to see the back wheel dead flat. Long story short, 3 guys who spend all day lifting heavy things, and a 3m extension on both a cross brace and a normal tire iron and we couldn't get a single nut to loosen. Drove it flat to the nearest tire shop. 20mins later with a rattle gun, they managed to get the tire off and lectured me about putting wheels on with rattle guns, apparently with alloy wheels it "Welds" the nuts on. THEN proceeded to put the wheel back on with THE RATTLE GUN! "But ours is set up right"... Took the car to my own Mechanic the next day and got 4 wheels loosened off (Which was an epic ordeal) and tightened back up by hand... And I've made a pest of myself ever time its had new tires on since...

She obviously bothers to keep it clean inside and out but hasn’t had the oil and filter changed at all in 8 years 😱 🤷🏻‍♂️ Highly likely she relies on the MoT to make her change bald tyres and replace worn brakes as well. Regarding the shearing of your tools, buy cheap, buy twice, I have pull bars older than you and I’m still using them today. Also regarding the insignia turbo, if the engine was running before you got started, you should have done the engine flush with the old one, instead of fitting the new turbo, then doing the flush❤

becuause of the exact same issue you had with Halfords overtightening the customers BMW wheel nut, I had to buy a set of 1/2" drive turbo sockets after breaking 2 3/8" drive adapters (including an impact one) and it took 2 of us on a 1.5m bar to undo it. I went to Halfords and told them and the guy behind the counter just shrugged and said " so, you got it off didnt you?".

Had a job similar to the Vauxhall on my cousin's Hyundai recently. She has had the car 4 years, its a diesel, never had it serviced and only does short journeys. Replaced the turbo, oil feed and return pipes were both blocked with carbon and the all the fins in the paper filter were clogged with oil. She said she never thought changing your oil was necessary.

Fair play to you being honest with people as alot of garages will rip people off and give others a bad name I check and try fixing it myself but I'm qualified nvq but that was back in the 90s and cars got to electronic now I stick to having old cars and welding is my job and has been for 25 years so mine only goes garage for mot and tyres

Nice work and good diagnostic methodology rather an firing the parts cannon like a lot of places do. Case in point: a mate from work gave me his old Skoda because it "Needed a new ABS pump" according to the garage (he was getting a new car anyway), turned out to be a 3 quid fuse that had a stress crack through it. Result - passed the car onto my Mum.

Just a little tip, with insulation or harness tape, if you're in a tight spot wrap some tape onto a small socket, sticky side out, then use this as a mini roll of tape, it makes it easier to wrap around harnesses where access is tight

That BMW with the stuck lug bolts... I'm a mechanic but my work doesn't have a tire machine, so had to have the rear tires replaced at a shop. Same day I tried removing the wheels because I had a suspicion. Total of 3 bolts were completely stuck and wouldn't come out. So I went back and they had to use the air gun they use on lorries to get them off, and then they overtightened them again while I was watching! Before I drove out I loosened them all, and then tightened to spec (I brought my own torque wrench). Pretty annoying that you can't trust others in the trade to do it right

had the same experience with an MOT centre last year, passed my vehicle and 5 days later im grinding metal down the M25 trying to slow down. Not funny, these guys need to do their jobs! Thanks for calling it out

I have a 2003 Seat Leon 1M 1.9 TDi and it still runs perfect with no issues like what you have on this model of Seat. I would not let Kwick Fit Fitters any where loose on my car except for tyres and exhaust.

Good luck with your business, you have the right attitude. That BMW did not deserve what they did to it's wheel sockets... probably used one of the big 'ugggadugga' guns.

Great work. Tip, when using a crack bar push it down don't pull up, your back will thank you in later life, ask me how I know. Thanks for sharing, you guys have great personalities.
