I made my sister's wedding cake and my mother was pissed that I told my sister it was her wedding gift from me. The cake cost me $400 for the ingredients and I spent 22 hours decorating it. The local bakery wanted $3,500 to make it. I told mom that I saved her $3,500 in costs for the wedding and if she wanted to gripe I would send her the bill. My sister was overjoyed for the cake as she got the cake of her dreams and didn't have to pay for it.

@@jaycooper2812 - My daughter is a professional baker. She makes magnificent cakes. One wedding cake 5 tier, turned out fabulous. The bride was overjoyed. My daughter delivered it to the venue, a barn wedding in a very beautiful place. She set up the cake on the table, with all that is needed with it as arranged. The next day the bride contacted my daughter. The wedding planner at the venue, decided it was too early to leave the cake out, since there was no air conditioning so…..she took off the top layers to fit it in their refrigerator! She destroyed the cake. The bride was devastated. My daughter was furious…..for several reasons, the poor bride and her reputation as a baker. She refunded the brides money. The wedding planner failed to see her screw up.

I made a point of telling the guests at my wedding that we did not want any gifts. In all honesty, I believe that if you don’t have the means to furnish your own house, you are not ready to get married (at other people’s expenses). I had a beautiful backyard wedding, with close friends, still got some lovely (and useful) gifts. I never understood how people can be so entitled.

@@pachecodecastro2593 - Years ago, people were young getting wed. Most girls still lived at home with mom and dad, the boy too. They were just starting out and family and friends would give them practical things to start a home…..toaster, blender, sheets, towels, dishes…..etc. None of this registering crap. You got the basics and were grateful for them. Today, many already live on their own and have the basics. Even royalty and wealthy people gets gifts at a wedding…..it’s a nice custom to use these items and remember and appreciate those who gave them.

A few of these were just people with different taste. If they want to get married at Taco Bell, bless them, why shouldn't they? It's tons better than asking your friends for money to create a Bride Magazine-style extravaganza. It sounds like fun to me. I'd laugh, but I'd go, and enjoy the hell out of it.

Eloping is perhaps not what you are recommending, but... You can definitely have a cheep wedding without being trashy, and you can have a trashy wedding that costs a fortune. Having a themed wedding - something which sadly has invaded Europe from the United States of Stupid - is beyond trashy in itself. As is having multiple bridesmaids (there is THE bridesmaid - ok!), and demanding that they have matching dresses (even matching colours). The theme of weddings is supposed to be THE WEDDING. Nothing else.

I heard on a podcast that those who spend more than $20K or more on their wedding are 3.5 times MORE likely to end up divorcing. Mine was well below that, so we'll stayed married for life I guess 😆

@@sandrafaith I have heard the same thing, although without specific numbers. It doesn't surprise me at all. For those who spend an inordinate amount on the wedding, the marriage is probably subordinate to "the wedding". (My parents got married alone. It was only they, the priest and the witnesses that the church provided. They stayed married for 54 years, until Mum died.)

We had our wedding planned for 18 months. There was a long waiting list to get the venue we wanted. All our relatives knew about it, and the date and time. When invitations came back some said unable to attend??? My parents were stunned and confused. Well….my wedding was at 4pm in our Catholic Church. When our limo pulled up to the church, the previous wedding was just leaving. It was one of my male cousins, and his new bride…..and the relatives who were not coming to my wedding. They picked the same day….same church…months after we had the date. That’s tacky.

I can’t help but think that many of these are faked just for amusement. However, they are a good indication, even if in parody, of how weddings are perceived nowadays. Many weddings are being produced as if they were stage shows, operas, or circuses, for which attendees might as well be sold tickets. The clip about seating guests according to the value of their gift is pretty much the same as paying for specific seats in a theater. IMO, a wedding guest should never HAVE to pay for anything at a wedding, including even a gift. Traditionally, guests were invited solely for the purpose of their presence as witnesses to a solemn but happy occasion, as in the expression “the pleasure of your company.” Of course, there are couples who are in tight circumstances, and guests may choose to take part in a money dance or money tree or something like that. But not if the wedding is an ostentatious display of tacky, as so many weddings have sadly become.

Just watching how some people behave in all kinds of videos on YT, makes me (as sad as it is) believe that the majority of these wedding disasters are REALLY TRUE… The entitlement combined with the arrogance AND stupidity of way too many people, creates these absolute horrific ideas people have about how their wedding should be and that their idea is perfectly acceptable within today’s society……. But we must keep hoping things will get better and focus on the MANY other people, who are NOT acting/thinking that way and who see the value of decency, good manners and being a valuable member of society…. LET DECENCY, RESPONSIBILITY AND REAL LOVE WIN !!!! ❤

The problem with most modern weddings is that some people have thrown away dignity, decorum, class and respect. Some of these breaches of common etiquette, stylish excellence and modesty are breathtaking to say the least. If the wedding is a joke, it's no wonder that the marriage turns out to be the same and the result is divorce.

Well to be fair more grooms are involved in decisions but the bride does the work. I mean we saw a lot of sports themed and hunting stuff. I doubt a bride wants their groom in a hockey jersey for example. But I think a big problem is people who decorate their girls bedrooms with words like “princess” over the bed and are made to believe their weddings are their big day just taught life is a damn fairytale and like marriage fixes their lives. They should be more focused on the marriage they want. The number of people I know who didn’t even discuss if they were going to have children and if so how many just blew my mind every time. I just don’t get the me me me thing but I think you can blame parents as well as tv shows like the Bachelor and movies and of course social media where they see weddings of wealthy people and think it’s normal. There’s so many factors really. It’s just gross.

@@phoenixgirl70 oh girl…I could NOT agree with you more!! Tell a little girl she’s a “princess” her whole life, she grows up thinking the sun rises and sets on her ass. This strikes me as so excessive. Most marriages end in divorce, but people think so highly of THEIR marriage that it's worth losing friends and throwing away money over. I got married for 20 dollars, by the justice of the peace in a trailer park and went back to a school for the military on Monday morning. I was married in a 50 dollar unwanted prom dress. Our marriage lasted 16 years before it ended over infidelity on his part. I have no regrets. That's more than most last these days.

Ehhh... Gift expectation isn't ridiculous if it's culturally expected. Here, it's common courtesy. We had guests who didn't bring a gift, but we wouldn't have known except we had cards come off packages and had to try to find who to thank for what. I wasn't bothered if gifts were of modest value or not (edited for clarification), my only issue was the couple who it transpired had not given a gift were the ones who asked all of the guests at their own wedding to give cash.
@larrywest42
@larrywest42 20 күн бұрын
Where is it culturally expected? In the U.S. Midwest+West Coast (middle class), it's _normal,_ but not _required,_ and only the crassest couple would ever judge someone *they chose to invite* based on a gift. That said, reality TV shows us there are *a lot* of crass people (and many more who relish watching their train wrecks).
